@@Surfer041 lol. They all collectively collapsed, especially Mariano. And Torre should have been fired after 04.

@timetowakeup6302 Mariano blew game 4, games 5-7 were all on Torre and the offense besides Matsui. Arod left Cairo on 3rd with one one out in game 5, then like a bitch slapped the ball out of Arroyo's glove in game 6. So yes he deserves most of the blame.

@Surfer041 Really, A-Rod was mostly responsible for the collapse of 04'? Im not a Yankees or Red Sox fan but A-Rod's slashline in that series was .258/.378/.516 with 5 RBIs.

You've had some good ideas for compilations. A-Rod had an underrated defensive year in his first year at 3rd. It gets overlooked because his offensive numbers fell off considerably. Some of that should have been expected going from the Ballpark in Arlington, which was pretty much the premier hitters park outside of Coors Field which was in it's own category, to Yankee Stadium as a right-handed hitter. This was made worse because he got away from hitting the ball with power the other way in 2003 to becoming a pull hitter in 2004. This is reflected by the fact that he hit better on the road in 2004 as opposed to 2003 when he enjoyed a home field advantage offensively. His 28 steals in 32 attempts were also overlooked because of his slow start, which had Yankee fans booing him, although Yankee fans even booed Jeter during the same stretch. 2005 was sort of the opposite as he added 15 pounds in the offseason while reportedly cutting his body fat, got back to hitting the ball the other way and had the offensive year everyone was expecting, but the added weight probably hurt his defense. In 2006, A-Rod struggled defensively, and (by his standards) offensively. Iirc, he pulled the ball even more than 2004, he struckout more, and he felt he was not quick enough and flexible enough. He showed up 12 pounds lighter in 2007 at 225 pounds and based on reports and how lean he looked, this loss appeared to be body fat. His defense was definitely better than 2006, his 24 stolen bases were 9 more than he had in 2006 while he was caught 4 times both years, but his offense was truly historic. His 54 home runs were far more impressive in the old Yankees Stadium than the 57 he hit in Texas in 2002. While he still hit very well at home in 2007, he hit better with 2 more home runs on the road in 2 fewer games. By contrast, he hit 11 more home runs at home than he did on the road in 2002. He was actually having his best defensive year in 2011 after he showed up 10 pounds lighter at 222-223 pounds. He was having a gold glove-caliber season until he tore his meniscus on June 19th. He was solid all around up to that point as well playing in 66 of 70 games while hitting. 289/.372/.506 with 13 home runs. He kept playing and at the team's 81st game on July 2nd, he had raised his averages to .304/.379/.509, though he was stuck on 13 home runs as the injury probably hurt his power. He hit under .200 in 5 more games before opting for surgery, but still hit under. 200 in the 19 regular season games he played after his return. His defense had been so good he finished with a 4 WAR in 99 games despite the effect of the injury for at least a quarter of those games, if not one third. I wish we got to see him complete that year as he was having his best all around regular season since 2008 and certainly his best defensive year at third.

Thanks Matt! Yankee Stadium was definitely a downgrade for A-Rod compared to The Ballpark in Arlington, and A-Rod pulled about 34 percent of his batted balls that year (which was the 2nd-highest amount in any year of his career to that point in time). The fact that he swiped 28 bags while only getting caught 4 times was important because that 2004 team did not have many guys who ran well, so that added a different dimension to the lineup and forced pitchers to focus on him as well as the hitter. I saw in a recent interview with Gary Sheffield where he said that when Torre moved A-Rod into the 2 hole, that was when his play significantly improved. I remember reading that although his final numbers were good, he was terrible in clutch situations in 2006. He also felt like he was too big (muscle-wise), which limited his flexibility and agility. Right after his horrible 2006 ALDS, he got right to work in Miami, and came back much leaner and slimmer in 2007. All that work paid off right away, as I believe it was 14 homers he hit in April, which was a record for most in a month. A-Rod helped keep them afloat in the early portion of 2007 when they struggled, but then once the pitching stabilized and the clubhouse was infused with some youth, they got hot in the 2nd half and captured the Wild Card. Although the midges and Cleveland's 2-out hitting burned them in that ALDS, at least we have his homer from Game 4 to look back at. I remember 2011 being the first year that he didn't achieve 30/100 since 1997, due to that meniscus injury affecting his power like you said. He was only limited to 99 games, but his slash line was real good for a 35 year old, so it makes you wonder what could have been if he was healthy the entire year.

A-Rod also took off in 1996 when he was moved to 2nd in the order ahead of Griffey after his return from an early hamstring injury. I remember that about his clutch stats in 2006, which culminated in Torre batting him 8th in an ALDS game. His 2007 regular season was the opposite of 2006 in terms of clutch hitting. His 2007 was so good it made his 2008 seem worse in comparison, but if A-Rod didn't miss 20 games early and play 20 fewer games than 2007, he almost certainly would have led the league in home runs again as well as WAR, and the Yankees may have had a shot at the playoffs since the Yankees went 9-15 without him that season. He only missed 1 more game after his return until sitting out 3 of the final 4 with the Yankees out of the postseason. He still stole 18 bases in 21 attempts, finished hitting. 302/.392/.573. and led the league in slugging. In 2011, he had 5 more home runs than he had at the same time in 2010 and a much better slash line, yet his end of the season hot streak still got him to 30 home runs in 2010. He would have certainly had a better all around year than in 2011 had he stayed healthy and very possibly one a gold glove.

Thank you for all that info, he’s my favorite player of all time so I love any bit of information I can get about him. My first season watching baseball was 2011 and I remember feeling so disappointed that that was the year his 30/100 streak ended. Injuries really messed him up because he had a great spring and was hitting the cover off the ball in April.

Love the comments gents, A-Rod is also my favorite player of all time, steroids or not, there hasn’t been anyone like him since. What a special talent. Another thing that never gets talked about is what he accomplished in pinstripes between 2004-2010. A-Rod put together a 7 year stretch in pinstripes that only Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, and Mantle ever matched. His yearly averages for those 7 seasons were essentially as follows: .300 Avg, .950 OPS, 40 Homers, 120 RBI, 100 Runs…. Simply incredible and most dumb ass Yankee fans didn’t appreciate him. Fools
