I went looking for Baxter on KZitem, but to my surprise found little. As a boy I watched the poet jaywalk from Waring Taylor Street, from bar or cell I could not tell. As he crossed Lambton Quay he dropped his wallet near the Wadestown bus stop. I was wagging, heading home after waiting for an empty house. I picked up the wallet, caught him up and returned it. Baxter turned and stopped, flashed a smile, measuring the boy. I remember wise eyes, long hair and beard, dirt streaked bare feet under pinstripes. He gave me a 5 dollar note and turning away, walked north, heading to Jerusalem wisdom in his wake.

Edward Te Whiu is my Tupuna. This very public court case caused a lot of heart ache and pain to all who had this surname. As a result, quite a few (including my grandfather) changed their last names. A massive thing to do for any Māori however, times were different then. Kia Ora
