How awful for the homeowner to expect to pay for new doors and siding and then find out the house is rotting and electrical needs to be pulled out. Major expense. Good job fixing it Shannon. I wouldn’t know where to begin with that.

I encounter that type of situation, once in a while, especially concerning the sill plate. The worst I encounter was a patio door over a basement window. 1- The deck was caulked to the siding. RED FLAG ! 2- Everything between the door sill and basement floor turned into rich compost. 3- The drywall and "some" floor joist was holding the door in place All that to say, a simple door replacement turned into a week job. The best scenario (sarcasm) it was in mid February (average temperature, -10ºF (-25ºC) to -25ºF (-33ºC)

Oh my! This is what I am afraid of! I have had a nightmare since I have bought my home. My roof when I bought it 6 years ago had a “newer” roof. It was only 7 years old. It was leaking so bad when it rained it would come through the fan on top my stove and also through my sliding doors into my family room that leads outside. I live in Washington. It never rains, right? I found out there was a 25 year warranty on the shingles but beings the previous owners never transferred the warranty GAF roofing said the strength was no good. The owners, a 85 year-old woman and her husband passed away and her son took over the sale. I got the roof to stop leaking g over the stove and rerouted the water off the roof in the area above the door but you can see all the rot under the eves. I’m so afraid to find what you just showed over my door. Yikes! This house was a quick build and finding so many cheap construction shots. Not sure if my doorway has headers. Wouldn’t doubt it. I put up a flower box under one of my windows and found out the siding has nothing behind it. Cheap insulation and then the drywall inside the rooms. Amazing! Thanks for all your videos. You have helped me with quite a lot of my repairs.

Yowza, from a simple siding job to a little bit of a mixed soup, there is a little bit of everything to get fixed there. If anyone ever wonder the damage a leak can do, well this goes to show you how that little leak can be a big headache down the road. Lesson here, get up on your roof every summers and check around vents , pipes, conduit whirlybirds and look for any signs that water may be getting in.

Original snakeskin wire. Even the recycle folks hate dealing with it. For sure when dealing with older homes with upgrades, best to get a thermal image inpection before purchasing a structure or beginning a reno on same. Not perfect, but it does give a decent picture of what evils may reside inside a structure. Combined with real world experience,shoddy workmanship may not be too easy to hide. Great job on righting a disaster. Thanks for sharing. Best to you and yours.

I have a question you may be able to answer. I purchased a home built in 1931, lovely home but after having lived in it for a year I am finding things that the building inspector failed to see and document. One is the aluminum siding is peeling in several areas on the North side. And where a concrete slab was poured I found a board up against the building that has dry-rotted. Without seeing this any ideas as to why the paint peeling off of the siding? Very concerning.

RIM JOISTS have no SPACERS against the house to allow weeping?
@munchou
5 жыл бұрын
Ow... leaks are so hard on wood :s Atleast, you found it out, which is in the end for the best! I had a similar surprise when I took down my walls, and it was a 9x9cm pole by the bathroom, so rotten it wasn't resting on the foundations anymore... I've got a question about insulation: I saw that the new glass wool that you put is about 10cm thick (while we'll agree is not enough, but better than nothing). It's an old house so obviously you can't make it thicker, but I was wondering if in the US there nowadays are some "energy efficiency" regulations when it comes to newly built houses ( that HAVE TO be applied). Or nothing and one can do as one wishes? Thank you
@1dgrdgr
5 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure ICC IBC is adopted in every state. IBC contains minimum insulation R-value specs for roofs, walls, windows, floors, basement walls, slabs, etc. Some states add even more code regulations on top of it.

I see a few no no in the previous work and also why put a vent in the flooring where the door is installed. Several problems can occur from that. You have a 1inch foam board now how do you fasten the siding to it without damaging the siding or compromising the foam board.

You can buy the screws with the plastic head Caps or they sell a nail gun that shoots specific clips just for the ZIP foam
