Reading through the comments here is incredible. It's astounding to see first hand that people really, genuinely believe that a woman controlling a steering wheel will immediately corrupt her, or turn her into some sort of demon. Words escape me... it's like you can put absolutely anything into a person's head, and as long as they hear and see it enough times they will genuinely believe it. I find that terrifying. Absolutely terrifying. And this woman is phenomenal for standing up to it.

Living in Saudi from past 9 yrs...dependent mobility is a big issue...though lot of things a v good compared to other countries as a Muslim its much easier to fallow my din but i cant deny the negatives. I feel handicapped for always depending on my husband to travel from a place to another.(disturbing his schedule of working hrs.) Also the big Saudi society who so called follower of sharia in my opinion are racist...more than being a good human one needs to be Saudi by origin to be privileged to have a life there. they think only appropriate jobs for women is to teach or care takers as nurses n doctors....n after a long struggle now from past few yrs they have added few more opening to job market for "Saudi women" only... As Muslims they must not deny the freedom of every individual who lives in their country to achieve a better life.there are good number of expat women who are talented n capable to live better but are handicapped. women should be permitted to drive n pursue a career of their choice if they are capable to fit in.

Saad. Al-Sahli - What a lame argument? It's not about women who are happy without driving. It's about women who intend to drive. It's about giving basic freedom to women to be responsible for their own mobility. The fact that KSA doesn't have public transport makes it ridiculous to deny women to drive. Have some shame as a young man as there are no other countries where women are banned from driving.

I think you missed the part about her fighting for women's rights in Saudi Arabia in a small way by driving. She's trying to get women to view themselves differently and not see themselves as children in need of protection, but to see that they have value. The truth is Rosa Parks got off of work, got on the bus and sat down because she was tired. She refused to give her seat up for that reason not as a protest to segregation.

As a Saudi it brought me great sadness inside when I realized a women this cureageous can't ever receive a standing ovation in my country, and is instead mocked and degraded for requesting simple human rights. I am ashamed of being a Saudi.

Just one symptom of the problems with establishing a society on dogma vs reason, logic, evidence and compassion. We are all human, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity or belief system, and so, all deserve the same rights. No religion or belief system that says otherwise is worth the paper it's printed on.

One of the expectations of being a true Muslim is that your faith will be tested. Manal -Al Sharif in campaigning for womens rights to drive was restoring her rights as a Muslim. Had she not chosen to do so and remained passive, would have meant a rejection of her God-given Islamic rights of equity and conflict with Allah's(SWT) decree. The Islamic God says that He will help anyone including women attain and maintain their divine rights of equity when they themselves are willing to defend and uphold them, in spite of intimidation, harassment and even death and that none of these outcomes is a failure but merely a stepping stone to a destination where the human achieves complete, permanent freedom from all oppression and the power to attain all good abilities without hindrance. Allah(SWT) categorically states in the Qur'an that a state of oppression( be it in the home or at government level or at an international level) is worse than a state of War and that He ordains a battle against all forms of oppression(including manipulation) until there is equitable justice. No Mufti or Ulema or other can override or distort the command of Allah(SWT) Himself.
