I consider myself blessed and lucky to have ridden the train back in 01, and to have ridden behind number 14, and saw 12 in action moving cars about in the Silver Plume yard. I hope those shays find good homes. 12 and 14 will always hold a special place in my heart.

If I recall, back in the day either shay #12 or #14 had an SP 6-chime on it. Out of all the SP 6 chimes I've heard, to this day that one is still my favorite but I can't find recordings anywhere.

CoasterFan2105 Yeah, its bitter irony that all the locomotives from when the WSLCo. as of 1960 still exist, but the railroad is almost completely gone. I've never even seen the Westside yard at Tuolumne, and it looks like I never will... BTW there is work being done (Sierra Railroad Historical Society, of which I am Vice-President) to cosmetically restore WS #2 at the Tuolumne Memorial park.

Good to see she'll be loved in Colorado, she certainly is in Iowa! Not much for her to do load and work wise on the flat tracks of the Midwest, we'll miss her, but have fun while you've got her!

Fascinating locos Skip we have nothing like them in the UK. I understand they were built for logging railroads? Liked the close up of the drive and valve gear, what a noise! They must have been pretty labour intensive in their day. Thanks for sharing this video, Ken

@tylereightynine Number 14 is based off an early class C design from the early 1900s, and weighs in at 58 tons. Her trucks are basic and bolted, her frame is an I-Beam design, and she is saturate. 12 is top notch. Her trucks are casted, and have a more solid design since the 12 was built in Lima's hey days. 12 also has a thicker frame, is also superheated, has piston valves, and weighs in at 65 tons. The 11 was built in 23 and is similar to the 12 but has slide valves.

@SkipW The problem is, they are stored outdoors with no protection, not even tarps over them, and the Museum doesn't put them in the roundhouse with 346. They need protection from the elements.

Are all the wheels driven on this setup ? The fact that the crankshaft goes the length of the engine makes me think that, it would be a great advantage on hilly tracks if this was so.

That one tylereightynine comment about when the Shays were built was really me, the jerk who wishes Cass could acquire 12 and 14. I told Danny in Big Six my vision on that a when I was at RFW 2011 nd he said they would have to put another rine in, probably a narrow gauge. Tey already have enough Shays anyway. There was even a deal that kind of fell apart for 1926 and Pickering 8

In answer to the comment from 4 years ago, they do have 1926 as a spare parts engine, but the 8 is still in Oregon. I have a better idea than Cass acquiring 12 and 14. One of these days before 9 goes back to Iowa. Run 9, 12, and 14 on a triple header. I hope the Rio Grande Scenic doesn't lease the Illinois Railway Museum's J. Neils Lumber Company Shay #5 for 7-10 years. The museum isn't done with her overhaul.

And speaking of IRM's #5 at RGSR, they just completed her overhaul last year, so we don't have to worry. Also, however, speaking of geared locomotives at RGSR, didn't they have a Heisler in their yard, #3? If so, why didn't they run it?
