A shintoizmus, Japán őslakos vallásgyakorlata. A hozzávtőlegesen 2000 éves múlttal rendelkező etnikai japán természetvallás meglehetősen titokzatos. A shinto szót a tizenhetedik századig nem igazán használták. A sintónak megvannak a maga szentélyei, papjai, istenei és rituáléi, azaz rendelkezik mindennel, amit egy vallástól elvárhat valaki. Míg ma a japánok több, mint 80%-a vesz részt a shinto gyakorlatokon, csak 3-4%-uk vallja magát a hívőnek, és sok japán a shinto mellett a buddhizmust is gyakorolja minden ellentmondás érzése nélkül.
