I have had my “Litl’ Blue” 2017 BMW i3 BEV 33Kw 94Ah since 01/25/2021. I bought it in showroom condition from an original owner with 24k on the odometer. I’m 75, drive it about 30-100 miles a month mostly to pick up online ordered groceries and to visit the VA clinic. I use a 240V, 16A (3.84Kw) Level 2 charger in my carport routed inside as an alternate to my dryer outlet. I get 13.5 miles per hour of charging, and at home my FPL electric cost is $0.031 per Mile. If there is a more perfect EV out there, I simply don’t want it. I don’t need more range, acceleration, styling, features, reliability, comfort, handling, or value. Litl’ Blue is obviously my Forever Car. Paid $16,500 but was offered $24,000 by Edmunds 3 months ago which tickled my worn out ego.🚙

Yep, used EVs in general are a must to look at for people who are thinking of electric but can't afford a new one. Not including Teslas, which keep their values quite well, they range in price from around $4000-ish for a Smart ForTwo electric to $15000-$25000 for a BMW i3. The average for non-Tesla used EVs seems to be about $12000-$15000. TONS of Nissan Leafs to be had, as well as VW eGolfs too.

My girlfriend has an i3. I didn’t understand why she liked it so much, she had a Chevy spark before, these small electric cars. Now that she moved in and I drive/ride in it more, I totally get it. She is a doctor, and has options when it came to vehicles. But she wanted this tiny electric car. I tried to talk her into something bigger and sportier(actually just cooler) to no avail. I own a Z06 and a Jaguar xjl supercharged. I like big supercharged/turbo V8s. Cars with presence. But every time we go into the city we take her car. It’s zippy, suuuuper easy to park, doesn’t draw unwanted attention, and it’s all electric! I like to take just to run to the store down the street. Even though I’m a millennial like her, I didn’t get the bug. But all of her friends and colleagues drive small cars like that. I won’t ever buy one for myself, but I appreciate them a lot more than I did

The US car is software limited to 1.4 gal. tank. Both US and Europe have the same size tank.
@SilverShadow2LWB
4 жыл бұрын
@@alrysin3154 Almost true. Both the European and US cars have the same physical 2.4 gallon fuel tank, but the US version is limited to 1.9 gallons by software. This was done mainly for regulatory reasons when the car was brought into California, thus the rest of the US. In order to meet the criteria of an extended range BEV (not a hybrid) the fuel range could not exceed the battery range. So the fuel range was limited by software to cut the fuel pump after 1.9 gallons. This allowed the car to use the HOV lanes on our freeway system. This could be coded to obtain the full 2.4 gallons in the US cars, but with the small possibility of voiding the factory warranty. If the car is out of factory warranty and no extended warranty, it is worth it to code this as well as "hold state of charge" to have the car perform like it was designed to do. The extra mileage is useful in the model i3 because of its small battery size. Of course this pertains only to the REx models only.

The reason for the difference in the capacity of the gas tank is because in the US, per CARB/DOT regulations, for a car that has a gas engine to be considered a full EV, the range on battery power alone has to always be higher than the range while the engine is running. If the i3s in the US had the full 2.4 gallon tank, the range on engine power could exceed battery only power, and the i3 Rex would no longer be classified as a full EV. Fun fact: the physical gas tanks in the i3 REx in the US and in Europe is the same thing. They're all 2.4-gallon tanks, but the cars in the US are programmed to only use 1.9 gallons. So when the car says you're out of gas, there's 0.5 gallons sitting in there. Thanks CARB...it has nothing to do with any decisions BMW made.

I own an i3--as of 1 month. A few of your statements need expanding on: range anxiety: My wife and I just drove to Stonewall Resort in West Virginia, 134 miles from our house. We could have made it on just electric plus the range extender, but stopped in Morgantown to partially recharge while having lunch. Once we got to Stonewall, the nice people there let us recharge overnight. The range extender is awesome--maintaining 70 mph with it running and climbing hills on I-79 in West Virginia was no problem. you must use fossil fuels to recharge: The charging station we took advantage of in Morgantown is powered by an array of solar panels. No fossil fuels involved. Even when charging using power generated by coal, the car gets the equivalent of 117 mpg--so your carbon footprint is vastly smaller than it would be with even the most efficient gasoline engine. The car is also a gas (no pun intended) to drive! Zero to 40 is faster than any other BMW. Handling is tight, because it's so narrow it almost feels like you're riding a motorcycle down narrow streets. Seating position gives excellent visibility and, aside from the A pillar as you mentioned, there are no blind spots. It's the ideal city car but also perfectly suited to short trips from home and back. This will be my regular driver from now on.

It is possible to generate electricity without fossil fuels. But most of us buy from an energy company. I buy mine from a 'Eco' company who's major claim is that electricity they supply is generated (100%) by renewables. However and it is a BIG however. The Terms & Conditions state 'due to circumstances beyond our control, or technical problems, supplied electricity may be produced by non renewables. If this happens, we will inform you of it via you preferred communication method'. They go on to say, I will not pay for any electricity that has not been 100% renewable. All EV's use considerable fossil fuels during manufacturer - it might be the truck that delivers the vehicle to your property or showroom, but they are still not totally (close) carbon zero.
@ekhaat
8 жыл бұрын
***** "All EV's use considerable fossil fuels during manufacturer..." No different than ICE cars then - except that for the amount of energy that is needed to make and deliver 1 liter of gasoline, a Tesla will run about 7 km. And the electricity used for refining the oil is no cleaner that the electricity used by EV's.

VG review. Yes, on regenerative braking, it comes as a shock if you are used to an automatic transmission. The smart thing is, if you think about any given drive you do, you end up at the same place you started, eventually. That means the uphills and climbing effort, is almost exactly equal to the energy you get back when rolling down hills. There is some efficiency and wastage to consider, so it still uses energy. Brakes last forever, because you use them a lot less, and no heat on the brakes means less waste. One more efficiency aspect - because you get 'dragged' by the vacuum behind other vehicles, and do low speed, electric really works in cities. Lastly, my brother advises me they are researching SOLAR PAINT. A multi-layer coating, or maybe plastic film, that would convert solar energy to electrical energy, obviously working at multiple angles. That would help our range anxiety?

One of the clinicians at the hospital i round at just purchased an I3 for his wife. He took me for a ride in the car. Until I sat in the I3 I was hesitant but after a go around on both highways and neighborhood roads my perception of electric cars has completely changed. As you said Docta, if one knows the purpose of this car, they will appreciate it. Alot of folks are afraid of the electric car, I now embrace it. If you were to ask the average joe that drives a run-of-the-mill 4 cylinder petrol commuter car if their car was electric, i doubt that they would have any qualms about it simply because their car serves the purpose of getting from point A to B. Said person would actually accept it due to money saving. Commuter cars are not race cars they are simply for travel purposes. Once people realize that these cars are simply for the average commuter, I think that they will grow to accept them more. And for those who think that this car will ruin performance based vehicles, as you said, look at the P1, 918 and la ferrari! Those cars are testament that electrification of vehicles can add to the quality of the automobile world Cheers! - Michael P.S. done with second year of pharmacy school! Onto the third! I can explain the tank thing. You get different subsidies/discounts for full EVs than you do for hybrids in the US. For the i3 REX to be classified as an EV rather than a PHEV, its EPA-rated range needs to be higher on electric than it is on gas. At 1.9gal, the gas range is slightly lower than the electric range. At 2.5gal, it is higher. So they basically make it to German standards, then for the US models they have it stop the gas line at 1.9 gal, AND forced it to use at much EV range as possible before doing so. I wouldn't be surprised if the hack to fix this was released by BMW themselves.

By all accounts and reviews they are great, fun cars to have, though I would say if you're going to go this route look for ones after 2014 and WITHOUT the range extender as that seems to be where any issues lie.

The reason behind the "smaller tank" in the US spec i3 is due to California regulations. In order for it to be considered a true "electric vehicle" under California state law (and get California tax credits), it has to drive further under battery power than under range-extender power. The fuel tank underneath the car is *actually* the same size as the European cars, but the software in the car cuts the fuel before the tank is run dry, in order to meet those regulations.

I want something like this to replace our old BMW because I need an “in town” vehicle for dropping off/picking up the kids at school and doing errands around town. Unfortunately, BMW decided to use some unconventional door system that would actually make my job more difficult. If only you could open the rear door without opening the front. Otherwise, make the doors open electronically so children can get inside the back by themselves!

To your comment in 4:10 - In the USA the rules to count as an electric car is defined by the volume of your tank. I think that is the main reason why we in europe have a bigger tank.

it is the transport system in transition..it looks nice and that hook up look is very nice man...only issue is the RWD issue...I had a bimmer RWD before almost died in a bad accident with that car so RWD needs to be improved for FWD or optional part time AWD system...good review man!

54 miles projected range with around 83% of charge. This means 65 miles per battery charge, not 81. BMW I3: Good for the city, for singles without kids or a dog. When you want to buy a car with a range extender onboard, I suggest to go with a Chevy Volt - less electric range, but good for daily commuting. And the Volt RE is much much more comfortable, more silent, and you can go further with its 10 gallon gas tank than this 1.9 gallon micro tank of the BMW. Don´t forget about the chance, to go 100 miles an hour with the RE, for around 300 miles in sum (full battery and full tank). The BMW range extender is just to support an emergency mode with reduced speed (around 50 miles an hour, if I am not wrong). I am driving my Ampera now more than two years, and now we have also a fully electric car - the Mercedes B Electric Drive (which is the much better car than the BMW - which I also had in mind to buy first). The Ampera (european brother of the Chevy Volt), which we use for local short trips and suitable for longer trips in RE Mode, and the Mercedes, as a full size car for kids, a dog and plenty of luggage. With a high level of comfort, security and value. Electric range is between at least 85 miles in worse austrian winter conditions with full heating, and up to 135 miles in the rest of the year. And by the way: BMW I3 with RE is more expensive than a Mercedes B Electric Drive with some extras. The best use for this car is for young urban people, singles or couples without kids, which want to have special looking (hey, I am electric!) and sporty electric car (due to the good HP and less weight due to the carbon fiber chassis). It´s not a bad electric car, but not nearly a perfect one, in my opinion (which is already hard to get ;). Also hate this idiotic suicide doors. Guess you drive with rear passengers, and you have to open the front and back doors, when they have to leave the car, not to talk about the narrow hole to get into the rear seats.

I've not seen a reply to your plea for a larger gas-tank - I believe this is because of the California regs for the market segment BMW were selling to - IIRC the regs said that it shouldn't be able to do more then x miles on REx, plus the REx could only be engaged after the batteries got to a certain level of discharge, i.e. there's no "Hold Electric Until Later" on the i3 which I think is an option in Europe.

My hubby wants the X5 but recently, I want this! No worries what the haters think, I think it looks cool and acts cool too. From comments on YT, seems this car and, in general, electric cars, stir up strong feelings in a lot of people. I wish we (USA) were encouraged to drive and make more electric vehicles... So although, Id like one, with a family (kids), few electric charging stations and very little knowledge on electric vehicles, it's not so convenient. Would make a cool second (everyday) vehicle for me...but then I'd want a solar charging source, and that would make three cars on our driveway, soo not necessary. :(

I've driven one of these before and I'm not going to lie they drive really nice. Super smooth and comfortable to drive. The regenerative breaking was a little harsh at first and I wasn't used to it but after a while it wasn't too bad. The only thing I don't really like about this car is the design choice. I can't explain why but to me the car is just not very attractive at all, other than that it is a great car.

I don't feel it's accurate to label the i3 a 'city car'. I did mostly highway driving and found it to be quiet, smooth, and comfortable. It even handled the twists of California's highway 17 just as well as my Subaru or a Chevy Volt.

I agree and forgive me if it appears that I was saying it is "only" a city car. I think I was trying to portray that it probably does best as a city car for lots of reasons. I clearly took it on the highway and on trips but like I said, i think some of its features are best suited for city driving.

Can the person addressing the issue of the gas tank please provide more info. Seems like you're saying the larger tank is already there and it just needs to be "programmed" differently. My question then is why not simply put more gas in the tank and don't worry about what the electronics indicate?

+DoctaM3 at only 1% oil used to make power in the US at lest thats been saved but yeah coal is shit too but at lest coal is just mined and then burnt unlike petrol that needs electricity to split the oil with heat funny how people never bring that fact up. do people think fuel just somehow fulls out of oil on its own lol

it's not there as of yet, but I can see this becoming very popular with a higher capacity battery in the future. But to be honest with the Model 3 on it's way, they would have to add some unique features to give customers a reason to buy it for other reasons besides the elegance of the bmw brand as a company.

We bought one (2015) a few weeks ago to complement a Ford Edge. Family discussion is over, the one out of the door first gets the mini. Guess where the kids are. Sorry, truck. Amazingly fun to drive, have not heard the internal REx engine so far -- probably need to make an active effort to run it dry of all the happy electrons in the battery. Tesla, Leaf? Not seen anywhere in MI.

Thank you for sharing your review. Very nicely done! I am at the beginning stages of exploring what this car offers. One thing that is not clear to me, if you kept adding gas into the 1.9 gallon tank does that mean you could have an unlimited range assuming you couldn't stop and charge the battery?

Not at all. It's for impact protection. If you were to drop an i3 on its roof, fully assembled, it wouldn't just crush from the weight of the battery. Carbon Fiber is a lot stronger than you apparently think it is.
