Did you get bats this spring? You did a great job. I loved your simple design and use of shou sugi ban. My concern was two-fold: bat pups often die in mesh and the roost opening seemed large enough for other animals to raid it with beaks or paws and large enough to accommodate a wasp nest. The ideal roost gap is 3/4 inch.

First time I see a bat house being sanded and painted. Thought they liked rough surfaces

Never put a bat box on a tree. Easy prey for predators. Not enough sunlight.

You are 100% correct, I moved the bat box to a more appropriate location since then.

I liked to idea of flame treating the outer surface. It is not recommended that you stain or treat the wood with an chemical for a bat or bird house. The "How To" was lacking in details for others to follow.

Usually, I only apply stain to the exterior but with this particular design, the interior is exposed from underneath. Natural oils like hempseed and such I believe are safe to use on the inside but I allow it to cure before installing. I agree this would be more appropriate labeled as a time lapse rather than a "how to" step by step instruction, I appreciate the feedback.
