To say that gun is just descent is an understatement. That gun is just as good in quality as any higher priced gun and shoots better then most because of the balance and the way it points perfectly. The shape of the grip is 1911'ish which makes its point perfectly. I had a SDVE and put 1500 rounds through it and not one malfunction and only cleaned the gun 3 times. I gave mine to my nephew as a gift for his first gun when he turned 21. I loved it so much that I just went and bought the SD 2.0 version and will never part with it. I have several guns and this is one of my favorites and I carried it the most. Thanks for a good video and stay safe.

These are very good values. A wonderful balance of price, size/weight, capacity, and brand. If you turn your nose up at these, it only means you have never really experienced one or your nervous that your more expensive pistol is not as great as the gun shop told you it was.

The problem now is price. I can get a canik for the same money and the canik has more features and it's a better gun than these. I have had a few of these over the years and I never had any issues with them. The triggers are spongy and heavy but that's not necessarily a bad thing for a self defense handgun.

Excellent review! I’ve had this pistol for around 3 years and it’s been a lot of fun. It’s got a heavy trigger pull as it is an SD model but for the price it’s an awesome Choice.

I've had my SD40 (non-VE w/Black slide & factory fiber-optic sights) for about 4 years. I've put over 1100 rounds of various types through it, and it's been rock solid. I couldn't get used to the articulated trigger, so I installed the Apex trigger & spring kit. I find it much more enjoyable to shoot now. If you can find the SD9 or SD40 for under $400 it's a good deal.

Long ago retired LEO. On the job 32 years after the U.S. Army @ 23 years old and my first duty weapon was a S&W 38 revolver 4". Years later we went to a Ruger 38 4" stainless revolver, then after the CA shootout, we went to a Sig 220 9mm and finally, 5 years before my retirement, we went to a Sig 40 cal. The two Sigs had first shot double action and then single action on the remaining rounds fired. I believe this was a good idea transitioning from double action revolvers to a high capacity semiautomatics. No first round liability, I believe they called it. No safety to unlock before firing was a definite advantage. You could buy a bunch of these S&W's for one Sig. I believe this is why S&W goes with this design double action plus the high capacity. We were often told, if you don't get them with the first shot you're in deep shit. Years later we were told to fire 2 in the center of mass and the 3rd round in the head in case the bad guy had body armor on. I can only imagine what the boys/girls in blue are now told.

I definitely agree with you that the looks aren't much but generally I'd say almost any striker fired pistol isn't going to look like much to begin with (since they're supposed to be among the "easier" types of pistols to operate). Personally I like the ergonomics and look much better than the Glock.

I am looking for my first hand gun and hammer just worries me. I feel like it is so easy for dirt or dust to get in the trigger area and it will jam when I need to fire or misfire etc, maybe it’s just a mental thing but that’s why I am only leaning striker and this seems like a decent First gun. Maybe lol

I have one and it fits my hand better than the M&P. I'm left handed but my age you were forced to do stuff right handed. I bought 2 guns that night. My favorite is a Smith 38 special with a 4 inch barrel. I bought a 80s model 64 and the SD 9VE at the same time. I got my revolver way cheaper than I thought I would. So I bought a 9mm too. My next one is going to be a SD 40VE. I like the looks and after 5000 rounds the trigger is very good

Good video! It is a good value. I've owned one for a while, but it isn't as fun to shoot as some of my other pistols. I like a short, light, snap trigger pull (which is probably why I like to shoot a revolver single action.....preference probably comes from being on a rifle marksmanship team for 2 years). I've gotten use to using this one, but I still don't like the trigger pull. Overall, good value, and magazine capacity makes it good as a self-defense weapon (once you get use to the trigger pull). It is definitely reliable, easy to maintain, and factory gun sight is fine. It is comfortable to hold. Overall a 3/5 star pistol.

Academy sells SD9VE variants with fiber optic sights. I've seen some KZitemrs put their upgrades on it and for the price, it's a decent gun. The long trigger pull was done by Smith and Wesson for defensive purposes so one doesn't accidentally shoot something unintentionally. CZs, Caniks have better triggers and reasonable prices

Go 9mm over 38. Many modern striker fired pistols don’t have a safety. And I know, it can be a bit weird at first. But make sure you buy a quality holster (Vedder, Tier 1, Qvo tactical, Safariland etc) and you’ll be good to go. You’ll hear people say that “your finger is your safety”. This is largely true - always practice keeping your finger off the trigger until you’re aiming. But in addition I like to think of a good kydex holster as a safety. So long as you have good retention and the entire trigger and trigger guard is covered and nothing can get in to pull that trigger inadvertently, you’re safe! Also it’s worth noting that flicking a safety off before you shoot is a fine motor skill, and those are the first to go in a life threatening situation where you’re already shaken up. Just another step you have to remember to do under pressure - not to say it can’t be done, but you will have to work that into your training I absolutely carry with a round chambered simply because in my mind, it’s silly to think that I’ll have time to chamber a round under pressure in a stressful life or death situation.
