I’m only a couple minutes in, but I can already tell this is a banger! I wanted to recommend The White Queen and The White Princess, two shows (altho basically the same show) by HBO, which are based on the actual war of the roses! It’s not 100% accurate, as they do have some minor witch-magic stuff, but otherwise it is very historically accurate! Since it’s HBO, there are a LOT of actors from GoT, which is also pretty hilarious!

A little more info for you, since the fact that the Tudors were Welsh, not English and is often ignored. Henry the VII wore a dragon as his sigual, not a rose, the rose was Lancastrian (English). Henry viewed himself as the Y Mab Darogan (prophesied or destined child), of Welsh myth. There is so much more in Welsh mythology that lines up with ASOIAF, that is often looked over. The Welsh are Y Ddraig Goch, it's on our flag. Wiki the Welsh Dragon, Mab Darogan and the Mabinogion, for stories of early Welsh myths based on early oral tales of Dragons, magic, many born out of the Roman/Saxon/Viking/English invasions and attempts to destroy the old religion. Oh, that was the red Welsh dragon/Y Ddraig Goch, the Cymraeg flag, not the english Dragon.

I definitely had to make some choices as to where to cut off relevant tangents like the Tudor line being Welsh, Henry VII Tudor's French connection and time there, and a million other things. I don't know when or if I'm making the correct decisions in these cases but including everything that was interesting or connected in some way would make my videos several hours long. I appreciate you bringing it up though, people can get good information like this from the comments. Welsh/Celtic/Gaelic mythology and mysticism are fascinating, and so is the history. Whales specifically does not get the respect that Scotland does as a distinct culture with its own history, language and traditions.

@iisotter8944 Isn't Henry VII's Welsh ancestor the one that caused a scandal by marrying Catherine of Valois without the regents' permission after Henry V died? (Or rather, Catherine caused it marrying him, since she was higher rank and had to ask him, yeah?) Owen/Owain? He was her clerk of the closet and, um, park steward? Or taste-tester??? There was some slight of hand making everyone think Catherine was carrying on with a Beaufort so no one'd see the match coming? It seems like a love match given the risk involved... I wish US schools taught more world history in general, but especially more about the North Atlantic Archipelago outside of England, and I'm really curious about the parallels in ASOIAF. Thanks for the search starters!

Followed you over from LmL’s Aftermath livestream, great start! Those tangents into other flower symbolism in ASoIaF? I bet we’d watch that video series, especially if they came with funny voices… I’m both embarrassed and relieved it took me ‘til this video to realize that Jon’s sweet scent is more direct underworld symbolism than just funerary flowers, what with decay often ~literally~ smelling sickly-sweet. GRRM does love his physical realities. So, uh, thanks for prompting… that. O_o Anywhoozles, looking forward to your second vid & joining Patreon next pay day. Congrats & good luck with the channel launch!
@herowithathousandvoices
2 ай бұрын
The sickly sweet is definitely a thing! I didn’t get into it but I call it the converse of Garth Greenhand, Garth Gangrene Hand. As far as other flowers, Valyrians are named after a heliotrope flower called Valerians. Then there’s more connection with that to heliotrope stones, bloodstone specifically. That’s one example, there’s a lot more depth there, and a lot of other examples but you get the idea. At some point I may come back to the subject but I have a bunch of other episodes lined up for now!

Ahaha Garth Gangrene Hand, ye gods... Okay, that's really neat! I'd caught the Valyrian/Valerian, but the only stones I know are the shiny math rocks that go click-clack. Great video, sir. Instantly hit that subscribe button. Comparative literature is my favorite academic approach to literary consumption and review. The algorithm dropped you in my feed, and I can see why. Thanks, algorithm! 😅 There is also a secondary meaning/reference in the name Pendragon, whether intentional or coincidental, one of the non Welsh uses of "pen" sees it meaning last or second to last in a series. For example, penultimate. This has been suggested as applying to Uther/Arthur in two ways. Firstly that since Arthur was a bastard, Uther was the last Dragon. Conversely, it can be used to say that Arthur, despite legitimacy, is truly the last dragon. Does Courtney Penrose have an heir? Biologically or symbolically? Edric Storm, perhaps as his symbolic heir, will become the Last Rose King, sort of how show Gendry was legitimized. Implications and applications of this possibility, ehh, who knows?
@herowithathousandvoices
2 ай бұрын
Greatly appreciated! And I'm glad you brought the Arthurian stuff up. Cortnay Penrose does not have an heir, and it's part of why he's so vehement in his defense of Edric Storm (a bastard). Not only that but in addition to the Arthurian reference, house Penrose is a reference to one of George's favorite historical authors, Sharon Kay Penman, whose works he's recommended (specifically her work on the War of the Roses). It sounds like you're very interested in the Arthur stuff, so I'll just let you know that my very first patreon video is actually all about Arthurian lore in a Song of Ice and Fire, coming out next week! I'm constantly finding myself having to cut out Arthurian mythos out of my essays because the tangents would be too long and off topic, so I decided it was time to get to work on Arthur, already a favorite of mine.

@@herowithathousandvoices Consider yourself bullied then😋! Do you see any parallels between asoiaf and Peter Pan..?
@herowithathousandvoices

I wouldn’t say I see a lot of direct parallels, but they are drawing on A LOT of the same things. Morningstar mythology is central to the symbolism of both, so are green men, and fae folklore. Neverland is named for the babies stolen by fairies, the neverborn, and that was the original name George used in his manuscript to tell his editor about the Asoiaf series he planned to write. I don’t want to spoil my own video, but I would be shocked if George hadn’t read Peter Pan, and whether it’s a direct reference or not they’re both doing extremely similar symbolism.
