Fun fact. Robar Royce and the Royce family as a whole is relatively closely related to the Starks. Ned's great-great-grandmother was a Royce. Edit also walder Frey's first wife and mother to his first four legitimate children was a Royce. So I guess you could argue that a lot of the fray's where kin slayers

“Dance with me then” & “For Robert!” the final words of Ser Waymar Royce before dueling with and being butchered by the Others. It feels like we barely see the Royce’s but anytime we do they’re the coolest and most honorable in the room.
@ThronesAndStars

You're absolutely right. Waymar was introduced as an arrogant guy, and he was, but in his last moments he earned my respect. I find it funny how we barely get anything from either of the heirs of the two branches of House Royce, Andar and Albar.

Did Robb really make any stupid decisions though? He married Jeyne out of honor, specifically because that was the one dishonorable thing Ned ever did, to have a bastard whilst unwed. You could argue trusting the Freys was dumb, but they had been fighting along and bled for the North, Stevron and like two other Freys had already died for the North. The one dumb decision may be to not tell Edmure about their full plan, but that's also on Brynden. I really don't see any others
@Rodneyjackson11
4 ай бұрын
@@hardlo7146 well it was honorable for sure but still dumb, I think sending Theon alone to the iron isles was also very costly and probably beheading lord Karstark instead of holding him as a prisoner was a bad move. I mean he did a hell of a job for a 16ish year old and I get why he made the decision he did when it came to his honor but still they were bad moves at super crucial times
@hardlo7146

YES! Finally! I loved Ser Robar so much during my re-reads but never mentioned it on online ASOIAF forums, due to how quickly he dies in the story. He was on my dream Kingsguard list for Aegon VI a few years ago, had I been the one writing the story. His nonchalance regarding war killed him; war is no casual thing, but he was an honourable young man outside of that nonchalance. Thank you for this video.

Good video bro, you know who is also someone I consider underrated, Maester Luwyn, at least in the first books, he's got a great influence in most of the Stark children, besides one of the very few Maesters to study the high arts I think they called it. And if you're looking for another great fantasy zaga I'd recommend The First Law.

I'd use the word ambitious rather than childish. Robar Royce's upbringing was enough to provide him with training, but his birth position left him as an inferior. Unless he found himself a patron willing to put him in situations where he could prove his skill in battle, he chances of ever achieving notable social status was non-existent. He's basically a less talented, less lucky, and less well-born GoT version of Arthur Wellesley or Eugene of Savoy. Renly was that patron.

I think that Robar joined Renly because he was the best choice to help the realm while making his own way. His house would not join the Lannisters (Joffrey), Stannis was already known as a tough man to follow. He probably didn't even know about Robb being crowned until after he had sworn for Renly.

No shame in the Love for The Game! His Red armor is MUCH alike to the Scarlett Viper's, Queen Alysanne's Sworn Sword. And you are SO RIGHT to know that Robar did something REALLY important here to the storyline. THIS is what she SAID to Robar-she is innocent..I swear on my husband's grave and my honor as a Stark. Her husband is NOT in his grave and she is NOT a Stark. We are MISSING something that happened. Cat did something wrong-Mel is not the only witch with red hair in text...the shadows come to STAY. Where did it go? It left the tent with Cat and Brienne. Cat swore on her husband's grave-she is going to try and get Brienne and Jaime to find Neds bones and return them to his grave before Barbrey can find them-if Barbrey finds them she will destroy them so that Cat remains cursed forever.

Great video! I totally feel you about wanting to re-read the books as soon as you finish! I always read the main books and then Dunk & Egg afterward. I always try to find something else after but aside from the Saxon Stories series from Bernard Cornwell I’ve not been able to find anything that interests me as much as ASOIAF. I’ve read the books 6 times in the last 2-3 years and I always find stuff I missed or didn’t pay much attention to the read prior. Definitely check out the Saxon Stories series though if you like battles and sword fighting and morally grey characters! The show “The Last Kingdom” is based on those books but the books, as always, are much better!

Good job, I really liked your POV. A few notes. Mormont would have informed Yhon that Wymar was late returning, just as he did House Stark regarding Benjen. Robar would not have had the option to deny Ned's command to find the King. The Hand speaks with the King's voice, he even sits on the throne. They Royce family is a first man house who keep the old gods. Ned grew up in the Vale, they have a close connection to House Stark. Robar for sure should have joined Robb. He was a known character that could be known to Cat even though it doesn't make sense. Maybe he was just that naive, or maybe his father ignored him and put all his effort in Andar and never taught him anything. But Bronze Yhon is a highly respected military commander it's hard to imagine, none of that rubbed off on Robar, especially seeing as he is a knight.

This was a wonderful essay, thoughtful and subtle. I would have never thought of Royce's arc as one of "growing up." You nailed it- in his last moments he lived up to all the myths he'd patterned his short life on, and in some ways, he is one of the few heroes in the books. I can't wait for my next reread (8th... 9th? been reading these since the mid 90's) so I can give more attention to this character. I truly believe you did a service to GOT scholarship. If they only offered doctorates...
