the reason there’s a similarity with the bends and jeff is because thom based his singing style off of jeff buckley for the album because while recording fake plastic trees they couldn’t get it to sound right but then they went to a jeff buckley concert and thom found his singing style i always love the story behind that and how jeff done so much in his short life

So many were influenced by Jeff. Thom York, Matt Bellamy, Adele, Lana Del Rey, Alanis Morissette, Amy Lee to name a few. Numerous others have talked about his iconic status in their lives, including Bob Dylan, Eddie Vedder, Chris Cornell, Michael Stipe, Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Brad Pitt... Jeff is one of those artists who other artists just idolize, in ways many regular listeners might not. I think it's the same way painters hold certain other painters in such high esteem, they can see the brush strokes and color choices and understand it on a whole different level. Artists hear him and can pick out all these incredible things that the layman probably misses.

Dream Brother always breaks my heart in particular. He wrote it when one of his friends was thinking about leaving his family to tour the world and sleep around. Jeff's father left him too, so he says "don't be like the one who made me so old, don't be like the one who left behind his name. Cause they're waiting for you like I waited for mine, and nobody ever came". It's so painful

Regarding Dream Brother, I feel once I knew the meaning of it it was 10x more impactful. It’s believed that Jeff wrote it as a ‘warning’ to a good friend from walking out on his pregnant girlfriend, similar in a way to Jeff’s own father. “Don’t be like the one who made me so old, don’t be like the one who left behind his name”. I saw the song a lot differently after I read this! “Nobody ever came”

We pushed up front so this angel-in-human-form was only about 10-15 ft away from me. I’m not a spiritual person, but holy fuck boys that was a serious spiritual experience. He goes even crazier live, never sang a song the same way twice. One of the most amazing things I’ve ever witnessed in my life… his death crushed me and still hurts to this day 😢 At least we were blessed with this masterpiece of an album to cherish before he left us. There's an interesting legend behind his recording of Hallelujah. The song was originally written and performed by Leonard Cohen. Cohen attended Jeff's dad's funeral where Jeff performed (they'd never met before, Jeff was estranged from his father) and Cohen was blown away by Jeff's vocal ability and guitar playing. Jeff asked permission to write a cover of Hallelujah and Cohen said yes. Jeff wrote this version by picking various lyrics from all the many versions of it Cohen had performed over the years. Cohen had a habit of changing the lyrics of this song in particular and Jeff ended up creating something that was less spiritual and more sexual. Because of this he was very nervous about Cohen hearing it. Jeff apparently didn't even want it on the album but when the label heard it they insisted it should be included. He didn't need to worry about Cohen's reaction to it, he's allegedly stated it's the best rendition of the song he's ever heard, but it seems he loves it specifically because Jeff made it his own by changing the meaning of the song. I personally think Jeff's interpretation of the song is the best, it's human, it's tragic, and the way he sweeps through those notes and holds them toward the end just brings a tear to the eye.

I absolutely love this album. Fell in love with it my freshman year of college ~ 2 years ago. I knew about it for a few years because Nothing But Thieves said they were all influenced by Buckley, especially their singer, so I checked him out didn't like it lol. Had to mature a little before it clicked with me, but when it did, I listened to it multiple times a day for 3 weeks straight. He was also really influential on my guitar playing. He's super underrated as a guitarist IMO. He doesn't have great solos, but just from a musical perspective, the guitar parts he made for songs like So Real, Hallelujah, Grace, and Lover You Should've Come Over are SO cool. His chord progressions are super interesting, it's stuff you'd never hear in another rock song. The song structures are also super cool. There are so many different parts to each, and they always go into different directions. His songs are just littered with ideas. He's such a great singer that a guitar solo can't really match the emotion he can convey with his voice, so he doesn't really have any melting your face solos. The fact that he can play guitar parts as complicated as the ones he makes, while also doing some of the best singing ever, gets overlooked by a lot of people. The fact that they are as complex as they are, and you never even notice, makes him one of the greats IMO. If you liked him that much, you have to listen to Origin of Symmetry by Muse. Very clearly, their singer was influenced by Buckley and Radiohead, but on that album, Muse is doing progressive rock/space rock with classical, punk, and psychedelic elements and incredible performances. Also Broken Machine by Nothing But Thieves is a great album. They're one of the best touring bands right now, and that album is their best IMO. Also influenced by Buckley, although they go in a much more hard rock direction. On Broken Machine, they also experiment some with funk, R&B, and more.
