Interesting thinker Wolf and Rajan did not mention extreme inequality which I believe leaves an ever larger population struggling to survive, become oblivious to democracy-politics. American society survives but cease to grow and develop, but at times we'll see protests like 'occupy' events. Some say America has become a plutocracy, after they removed limit on political contributions while the top 1% gained over 30% of income and wealth.

He talked about inequality when he said the middle class was hollowed out. That means their relative, and absolute, decline in society that fuels their anger to choose a demogague, who is best summarised in words of Trump: "I am your retribution." Therefore, new market by not sharing their wealth - he compares Apple and GM providing jobs to non college goers - are fuelling discontent among ordinary people who again don't wanna go to leftist Brahmins but to a demogauge who shares their anger and speaks their language. For all Martin suggest a solution in what he found in Dutch practice of "Felxicurity" (Felxicurity and Security Act). I hope it helps. 🙌

First time I've listened to this chap and he's very interesting and well able to express himself and appear logical. His self doubt is openly and honestly expressed, which is a charming, yet deliberately disarming part of his armoury, but is nevertheless a clear indicator of his genuine naivety, as is his trust in China. To suggest that democracy should be extended to include decision makers chosen BY LOT!! is very much akin to putting a farmer in charge of a trireme in a storm - a phrase attributed to Socrates via Plato, he ought to be fully aware of; and demonstrates absolutely without doubt how out of touch he and other educated elites truly are with the reality of the overall intellect of the vast majority of their fellow human beings. How do I know this - because I'm one of them.😊Mick the Hick.

Martin had looked extensively into Greek history for lessons, wonder if he also should look into Chinese lessons, especially from Han dynasty onwards. The Chinese also had dealt with popularism, nationalism, socialism, capitalism, religion and their social impact... perhaps that could explain Trump & etc. BTW, China is not going through " Communism Capitalism" but what they call is "Communism with Chinese characteristics" which in fact is Confucian approach. This is similar to Vietnam, and also Korea & Japan - having different ways to provide "democracy" & accountability. If analyze China and East Asia through Confucian lens, would some how makes it easier to understand why actions are taken.

I will put forth this view that has enable Singapore a little island red dot to succeed. And also how China has also succeeded its thru a proven set of leaders that have gone thru trials and tribulations on the world stage and has proven their ability to advance their country economically and working with the business world to ensure a fair playing field to nurture their domestic companies and also ensure a place for foreign companies - the challenge is managing this mix and expectations as in life everything is about balance. So this is indeed the failing of what is happening now in the US and in Europe and most western countries, where ideology and labeling seems to be more important than the real problems face by their own limitations and their place in the world. The term Democratic Capitalism only serves to illicit emotion response and arguments, its literally placing walls on a problem that doesnt need this walls to begin with. The notion that only in a democratic system can Capitalism survive and flourish has been proven misleading and misunderstood. I place before everyone the more than 5k years history of the Chinese from its warring faction beginnings to achieving unification than homogeneity as a country and a system that actually lasted for centuries even after the Greeks to the Romans and lasted till today. There is a no one shoe fits all solution to the world and why the west keep on this debate and silo mentality is really just noise and doesnt really breakdown to the underlying relativity of the common people and their real aspirations in life that is to have a better life for themselves and for their future generations this is the commonality with binds all races and all people in the world together. So lets ask the question are people both with the concepts of democracy and freedoms at birth?? I dont think so, people are born to survive and how to compete in this world to survive to live a better life that is the question to ask are the leaders working towards this simple and basic concepts when they are place in positions of responsibility by their people.

Democracy is equal rights, voting rights, equal pay for equal work, etc. Capitalism works for profit, no profit no product. In people's elected democracy, they are both important and conflicting at the same time. There is no known "balance" between the two. Always a war in people's elected democracy. That is the reason why "Open Elections, and Free Press" are important to make the balance, which is always on the horizon.

Capitalism doesn't last long under dictatorship, a one-man show at a time. Eg. Banana Republics. Pakistan. Why Capitalism Thrives in People's, multi-party Democracy. People make mistakes. Period. In a democracy The Other Party comes in place and corrects those mistakes, and the cycle goes every 4-5 years. Capitalism needs this change also. As rules of governing change so is the structure of the Capitalistic market. This is followed by people's living standards. In a dictatorship, change occurs with the death of the dictator.

How is it equal rights, voting rights, etc... when u need more than 100million donations to even run for the US Presidency..... how do u evaluate your leaders, how much do u understand your leaders? What is the track record of your leaders? Let me put this argument, can we hire CEOs to run complex Corporations by doing a street elections? So this notion of elected democracy of by the people for the people doesnt even take into account the qualification and capability of the leaders u elect and also what would be the future 10 years to 50 years down the road.... Let be honest any Corporation that changes its CEO every 5 years will never survive as an entity that is really how the world has changed and is working now.
