I enjoyed watching your honest video. You really need to be comfy though don't you. It's a shame when things don't work out but you've saved it brilliantly.

Thank you 😀 I didn't want I to be a total fail, it just didn't make me happy as a dress!

The Billie is actually one of my favourite patterns. I’ve made 8 dress versions and probably around 8 sweater versions. I’m tall at 5’ 9”, and I lengthened the bodice part by 2 inches. However, I think it’s to do with body shape. I have broad shoulders and I would call myself an apple shape in general, whereas you appear to be more of a pear shape. I made the size 8 because of my broad shoulders, but the dress is loose over my hip area, which I like.

Hi Marion, I really loved the look of the Billie, I am pear shaped, definitely 😀 at least I know what not to do next time, keep it as the sweater and stick to other dress patterns which suit my shape better. x

Watching you whilst grabbing a sneaky half hour on my overlocker before dinner! I think you were right to cut the dress down to sweater length, as you obviously feel so much happier in it. I’ve made the Billie dress twice, but both times without the pockets, partly because I was nervous about adding the bulk round my hips, but also because I have to grade out at the hip and I wasn’t sure of the impact of that on the pockets. I’ve never made the sweater version, and I’ve never made the puff sleeve version. Funnily enough, when I made the Hot Coffee dress by Waves and Wild, I absolutely hated it because I felt swamped, and my solution was the same as yours, to cut it down to tunic length, and I actually shortened the sleeves as well. It might be that I just got the sizing wrong, but I quite like how oversized it is as a tunic. Lovely vlog as ever. X

Hi Laura, I think I should have graded out too, but it was just how the shape fitted me I wasn't happy with and am much happier now I've shortened it! Thank you x

I haven't made it as I think it would make my tummy and bottom stick out. I usually make at TATB size 5 and i'm only 5'3" . I thinks I prefer your jumper one best. x

Thank you for such an honest appraisal of the pattern. I haven't made this but I did make Tillys bettine dress which also goes in towards the bottom, I've never worn it and I think that it's probably because it doesn't flatter my pear shape. The sweatshirt looks great and I'm glad you could save it x

Thank you Clare, I'm know it looks lovely as a dress on a lot of people, but it just doesn't suit my shape 😩 there are so many other patterns by Tilly that I do feel happier in 😀

Hi Mandy, i really enjoyed your review. I was particularly interested in how you adapted the dress to create a jumper. I have a dress in a cream fabric, which I feel would be better as a jumper. I have been pondering for a while as to how to adapt it. I will get it out of the cupboard and have another look at it and see if I can do something similar to what you have done. I am tall as well, and of the three dresses that I have made, I tend to lengthen them from the bottom, and omit the hem band. I just find them comfy to wear around the house with leggings and a cardigan, this is my style of lounge wear as I don't enjoy wearing jogging bottoms

Thank you Helen, I am glad I didn't ruin it, I cut off three inches to start with and then went for it with the length and the pockets! I have some lovely cream cable knit to use, but I'm considering what other pattern I can use now - I should have something in my stash!!! Hope you get on ok and would like to see what you do 😀

I’ve made the dress and top and had same issues you did. I like the top version I’ve made. I much prefer the Nina Lee south bank sweater dress over the Billie but I do leave off the pockets when making the southbank dress. Congratulations on salvaging the dress by converting to a sweater. Unfortunately not all patterns fit all people.

Thank you - I do agree, like most things, one size (pattern) doesn't fit all, we are all unique 😀 I haven't got the Nina Lee South Bank Sweater and I am trying to resist buying any more patterns at the moment, but it may feature in my future 😂

I made the Billie in the dress with thd puffed sleeves, which I liked. I'm slightly taller than you, so I lengthened it by I think 3 or 4", but I did it at the bottom, rather than the lengthen/shorten line, because my height is all in my legs. So the waist would have been too low for me if I had done it the way I was supposed to do it. I really liked it, but after washing, it shrank about 2 inches in length, and also in the width of the bottom band. I don't notice it any tighter anywhere else, so I must have cut the waistband on the lengthwise grain on the fabric. It was a thrifted remnant of what I had thought was polyester fleece, so I hadn't preshrunk it since polyester doesn't shrink. But I was wrong. So now I have to lengthen it somehow and do something about the bottom band. I could still easily wear it with leggings, but I really wanted it to be a dress.

Oh that's frustrating about it shrinking! I did that after going on a Jeans course as I didn't prewash the fabric (never again) so although they still fit, they were too short in the leg! is the fabric something you can add a longer coordinating band to or maybe? I used to be 5ft 9.5 but I have shrunk as I get older!

@@makeitsew2023 I could probably add a contrast to it, since I don't mind the colour blocked look. But I have to pull out the scraps of that fabric first and see if I can make a looser and wider band with what is there. It was really just a wearable toil, but I really ended up liking it. Your jeans story is the story of my life. I have a hard time jumping on the ankle pantleg length bandwagon because pant legs were always too short for me. I have a 33"-34" inseam and they used to only make ready to wear with a 28" or a 30" inseam for women. And for men it was usually 32", so that didn't even work for me. So my pant legs were always a good inch or two above my ankles. As a teen I was always asked where the flood was. If I bought from the tall girl shops, the leg length was fine, but the waist band did up around my ribs because my body isn't really tall, just my legs. And to top it off, even though I always washed my clothing in cool water and hung trousers and jeans on the line to dry, upside down pinned by the bottoms of the pantlegs, they always shrunk a good 2 " in length. Yet my friends who were all tiny, complained that they were sure theirs stretched in length.

I have not made the Billie, but as Michelle said in her vlog and you discovered also with the fit. I don’t think it is down to either if your body shapes as much as you think. I think it is the fabric. I have used this fabric several times and have had to consider the lack of stretch in the cable knit fabric. It’s hard to explain but I wonder if you’re lengthening ( great tutorial by the way, especially the pocket placement and tapering of the sleeve.) while you wanted 6 inches, the increase was in the wrong place. Did it result in the pattern being too narrow in the wrong place. . Is there a recommended maximum increase amount at any one point? Sorry that might not make sense. If you make it again you could ‘A’ line it a bit or make it straight from your hip down. Great save with cutting the bottom off. Your patience and perseverance is to be applauded.

Hello, it all makes sense 😀 there’s no maximum length as far as I’m aware, but I just think no matter what I did, with where I hold my weight it wouldn’t have made much difference ☹️ loving it as a sweater though!

I liked the pattern when I first saw it, but after studying it I thought it's not for me. The band at the bottom wouldn't work for me. I think it's a great pattern for someone who is tall and thin, and that's not me.

Hi Diane, me neither, So many other people looked lovely in theirs, but we are all different body shapes and so it just hangs in the worst part of my shape! I will stick to the Freya dress from now on 😀
