I thought that the dubiously canon end to Vriska's story was that she was there at the end of the universe, about to get to have her ultimate showdown with the ultimate bad, and then she gets punted by a rock into the non-canon dimension where she has a long talk with a genetically identical clone of herself and comes to realize that the version of her that gave up on everything was actually way happier as a person.

It’s so dumb to me how people preach that out of all the murderstuck villains (Vriska, Eridan and Gamzee) only Vriska deserved redemption. Eridan was more willing to socialize with the rest of the group, even though most people treated him like shit, and Gamzee’s mental faculties become questionable as soon as he looks into Lil Cal’s eyes (same thing happened with alpha session Jack Noir, who gained LE’s powers after he looked into Lil Cal), meanwhile Vriska CHOSE to do all of the things she did (except feeding trolls to her mom, that was more of a kill or be killed situation), so saying only Vriska deserves redemption is not only biased but stupid as well.

theorizing about Gamzee being manipulated by Lil Cal is just coping, IMO. Hussie essentially retconned everything about him that could make him sympathetic, just to screw with his fans, yet again. as in "LMAO! Gamzee was ALWAYS genuinely and irredeemably evil! all this time, he was just friendly, because of sopor-slime!" i would've been okay with Sober Gamzee as a concept. even if he killed Nepeta and Equius. but he should've shown REMORSE for his actions! everything else just would just clash with his previously established character. like what if he didn't want to serve Lord English anymore, after realizing: "shit, i just killed two of my friends! what am i even doing!?" even this would've been more interesting than him, being a crazy killer clown for a bit and then being stripped of all his agency and personality, later on.

Watching this really made me realize so many things. 1.) Reviving Vriska literally stripped her of all the potential development she was doing while dead. Becoming more empathetic and just seeming genuinely happy for the first time we've ever seen her. That fucking sucks so hard that Hussie reprimands Vriska for breaking out of her awfulness. It's like he WANTS her to be shitty because he knows people won't take two seconds to think about how much it sucks. 2.) Hussie's creepy obsession with Vriska. Like I sincerely wonder if it started out as a joke (his authorsona wanting to marry her + continually stalk her half the whole comic) that then went WAY too far, and snowballed into him shoehorning her in the forefront of the entire narrative...? Hussie himself said she was meant to play into the Mary Sue archetype as well so 🤷 Maybe he wanted to keep her relevant purely for that?? That or he couldn't keep his boner in check over her, even if it was ironic it still was weird as hell. 3.) I and many fans still don't get Hussie's rationale that reviving Vriska was the solution to the doomed timeline. Quite literally it was Arenea's fault for meddling and wanting to be on the forefront (this writing style sound familiar for anyone else?). If I remember correctly, it's implied that Arenea manipulated Gamzee throughout his abusive haterom with Terezi. So many issues from the doomed timeline could have been resolved if Arenea hadn't meddled, and continued to assist Vriska in the afterlife to find the juju. Anywho, I hope these comments aren't exploding your notifs. Wonderful video, I love your style and word choice. Looking forward to honestly any kind of analysis from you and I'll definitely be checking out your older ones.

Responding to your points: Hussie is a troll. Also a bit of a hack. Also jaded asf and tired of Homestuck and its fanbase. And also self aware enough to know what hes doing. He purposefully sabotaged homestucks ending because he reached a point where he didnt care anymore, and just looked for easy solutions to this mess of a story. He already had a habit of killing characters off out of boredom or having no idea what hes doing at times but going with it because its funny or novel, ignoring its potential impact on the narrative and its structure. Vriska being a mary sue and literally shitting on her old self, which represents the absolute best she has to offer as a person, is such a blatant example of the author telling his own story to fuck off.
@Palepetal

Aranea was the reason why the timeline became doomed that is for sure. But I doubt Aranea mind-controlled Gamzee into abusing Terezi. He did that on his own accord. That's so, so *very* incredibly hypocritical that Hussie would act so condescending and telling Eridan likers to "cut that crap out" for wanting a similar style of development to Vriska? What an ass. I love his usage of the phrase "allow him some latitude to figure stuff out and redeem himself" (29:21), because he couldn't even execute that properly for Vriska. Honestly, I feel even if he did give Eridan more time to develop it'd be the same way he canonically did Vriska. And if Eridan ever did correct the errors of his ways, he'd be narratively + directly reprimanded, just like how Vriska was to her dead self for being genuinely happy and becoming better. Sigh.

I think the Condesce actually killed Dualscar, not the Grand Highblood. Mindfang wrote in her journal that she knew Dualscar was in love with the Condesce and that if the Condesce ever knew he'd be killed for his "unthinkable presumption". Mindfang claims that she'd never stoop so low as the have others settle her score like Dualscar did... but Mingfang did stoop so low when she mind-controlled a bunch of lowbloods to hang Redglare during the trial. Mindfang blames the Grand Highblood, but in actuality, the Condesce killed Dualscar because Mindfang leaked his information. So that would explain why Eridan killed Feferi and not Gamzee.

How funny that you mentioned how no one really criticizes Meenah’s fascism worship in a meaningful way because from my understanding there is exactly ONE troll ever who manages to make her do a double take on her Condesce fangirling-Cronus Ampora, Fellow Eridan Ampora’s Dancestor, who calls out how she treated her universe’s Mituna so much worse than he ever did to his universe’s Mituna-and he’s pretty fucking bad. Meenah really had nothing to say about that!
@fuinafeiraevoltei

the ironic thing about Cronus and Meenah is that the fandom demonizes Cronus (rightly) but forgets that Meenah is as bad as he is, always downplaying the gravity of her actions. She literally bullied and traumatized Damara to the point where she freaked out and ruined their session. She also entered into a literal criminal relationship with the 13 old dead Vriska but people still downplay this horrible issue. Sadly, for the mostly of Homestuck's fandom, Meenah is girl boss, empowered who has done "nothing wrong".
@angelistoftenshi
Жыл бұрын
@@fuinafeiraevoltei it has a lot to do with narrative framing, I’m sure. The story itself treats Cronus so much wildly different than it treats Meenah, just like how Eridan gets treated so much more differently from Vriska. Part of it is amusing to me, seeing as how typically it’s the opposite in fandoms and girls get treated so much worse and given less slack than guys, but I wish it hadn’t come at the expense of seemingly endorsing some really fucked up and hypocritical Shit. Like I’d forgive the MeenVris if it was a case of the author forgetting that they’re not the same age at all on account of the symbolic art style, but that’s CLEARLY not the case and the whole thing gets swept over??? By both Fandom and Author???? It’s all just such a messy and gross clusterfuck. But while Meenah barely gets a single Pat on the wrist for being pretty awful in her backstory and beginning(and BARELY getting better while on screen in terms of a character arc), Cronus will never go past being that asshole that grilled the mentally disabled kid on-screen. the worst part of all of this, that this video didnt point out, is that the potential positives of the approach taken with (vriska) and meenah was ALREADY PRESENTED at the end of her arc in act 5 with doomed john. the entire point of her death and resolution in the dreambubbles with john was that in the end, all the bad she did wasnt any form of necessity, all it brought to everyone involved, including her, was pain and suffering. she clearly wanted to reconcile with her friends, terezi specifically, but she doesnt want to put in any of the actual work or emotional vulnerability required to mend the relationship, she wants an easy way out. she believes that if she solves all of her friends problems herself, then itll be some sort of fast track to the absolution she so desperately wants, and it costs her any further chance at reconciliation because her best friend is forced to put her down or be put down due to vriskas own pride. neither party involved is happy about it, it tears terezi up inside to have to do it, and as discussed, all vriska really wanted to accomplish was to be in terezis good graces again. perhaps if john had gotten to her earlier, she wouldve been able to embrace what he taught her before it was too late, but by the time she had just begun to realize that being vulnerable emotionally was not weakness and that pride was her biggest enemy, she was already on the edge of the cliff and thought her only choice was to jump. and so with her final act of stubborn pride, she destroys any chance at mending her past with terezi, and any chance at potential meaningful growth and change with john. she screwed up her life so bad that she left no room for second chances, the only second chance she has left is in death, an entirely fresh start with another version of the person who began to teach her how to change who has no memory of her at all. her constant need to be important to people, to prove her own worth, it all finally comes back around to bite her, and now that she will never be important again, all she has left to do is look inward and figure out that she never needed to be important or strong or cold-blooded or anything like that to be happy, or to have worth. what she needed was to be vulnerable, and shes given the opportunity to do that with doomed john. and so in a perfect world, this is the end of vriskas arc. she lives out(for lack of a better phrase) the rest of her days with doomed john, accepting that she cant fix what she broke in life, and letting it move on without her, making a new life for herself and working to change for the better with someone there to support her. but this is not a perfect world. instead act 6 brings her back into relevance the first chance it gets, and basically does a complete retread of the arc she had in act 5, all told in a much less cohesive and compelling fashion that tramples all over the perfect conclusion she was given in act 5. and to add insult to injury, in the end, the story bends over backwards to prove vriskas original ideology right and tear down the idea that being emotionally vulnerable was the best thing for vriska and everyone around her by reviving her with bullshit off-brand time travel, the results of which make no logical sense no matter how you spin it. dont even get me started on post-canon bullshit i dont even wanna go there. sincerely, someone whos favorite character was vriska in act 5

Notice before reading: I hate Vriska. She is one of my least favourite Homestuck characters. That being said, I believe it makes sense that Vriska is the one to find the ultimate weapon that defeats Caliborn/Lord English. To me, it makes perfect narrative sense that a monster can only be defeaten by a being as horrible as it is. Caliborn is a selfish child that is incapable of growth or mental development. A selfish, egotistic, mysoginistic piece of shit that is willing to do anything to further his own strength. Vriska is the same. She is an attention seeking bitch that denies others importance and relevance because she believes that she's the center of the universe. She believes herself to be above anyone else in importance. She is willing to do anything to be the "hero", no matter the question of morality. They are 2 extremely similair characters. They both even killed a character (Calliope/Tavros) that is essential to their own growth as a person. The only difference is that Vriska was afforded forgiveness. Undeserved and unrequited forgiveness.

In the interest of defending the last shreds of an undeniably and profoundly disturbed being's dignity, I feel compelled to point out that the (Vriska) of the Epilogues is NOT the same one as the Pre-retcon!(Vriska) that Meenah abandoned. Epilogues!(Vriska) is just the post-retcon Vriska that never went through the development that Pre-retcon!(Vriska) did. She is the current "main" Vriska, for what that's worth, starring in the Act 7 animation and all subsequent continuations of the story. So to summarise: Pre-retcon!(Vriska) is the nice, punky one. She made her last appearance in [S] Remember with Pre-retcon!Terezi, wherein they may or may not have perished because of LE. Epilogues/Post-retcon!(Vriska) is the same old quasi-sociopathic spidertroll everyone is well familiar with. She is and continues to be as toxic as an arachnid's sting to everyone around her to this very day. So that's basically the Vriska state of affairs at the moment. Perhaps it cleared some things up, perhaps it did just the opposite. As HSC Homestuck continues it's downward descent, ditched by it's captain, manned by a vestigial, unprepared crew, perhaps it doesn't matter one way or the other. Well this has turned into a rant huh? Guess I better cease before I forsake cohesion entirely.

the reason vriska doesn’t receive nearly as much rebuking eridan does is because people are coomers. “if bad why sexy lady hurrr durrr” that’s their logic.

I recommend Funk McLovin's Homestuck Alternate Universe for those who want Homestuck with refined character and writing. (They also aged up most of the character so the relationship isn't weird)

4:20 i think that Jade's narcolepsy was best girl just trying to manipilate a human being effectively, but she coudln't do it because of the difference in their brain, thus only being strong enough to make them fall sleep on command, which even rustbloods can do with toher trolls

I understand wanting to make Eridan a more developed and fleshed out character, but I don't understand the idea of making him essensially the new protagonist. Could someone explain the point of that to me?
@spacepiracy1552
3 жыл бұрын
the argument is basically that if vriska can become super important to the story because of bullshit and hussie's fetishization of her, there's no reason why eridan who has much more potential and in comparison is a much better person(troll?) shouldn't be
@barkbork7528
3 жыл бұрын
@@spacepiracy1552 I suppose I get that, but I feel like I just wouldn't find him a compelling protagonist. I think I'm biased because I'm disabled irl and his whole culling thing definitely makes him off-putting. Even if the idea is as a protagonist he'd unlearn it.

12:57 despite what you said I still think that yes, Vriska is one of the most human characters in the comic. The Epilogues are dubious canon and Homestuck 2 is not canon, so we can put that aside and look at her character in the actual story of the actual webcomic
