It also ignores the generations of extreme redlining in baltimore, the consequences of said redlining such as exposure to asbestos and lead paint, and extreme police profiling. Like a cockroach, I hope by shining a light on this comment, these dogwhistle racist phrases will scuttle back into your mom's basement from which they originated. That college has a tragic story, it was started back in 1980 and ran until 2015-ish. It was basically a college serving Baltimore city residents. They got into problems with the accreditation board and also serious financial troubles. I think they had the right idea but the obstacles were just too much. For one thing students came in terribly under-prepared for college much of their effort was just equipping students with the basics that they had missed because of the crappy Baltimore city high schools. At some point they lost accreditation (eg their bachelor's degrees became meaningless), the school had to close up and it ended up vacant-- in a super rough neighborhood beset with junkies and street people. Of course, they're going to break in but not to take pictures, they go in to rip out copper for scrap, take out anything remotely valuable, shoot up and just trash the place for fun. In 2016, there was a fire on the third floor. Looks like some of that is water damage from the fire fighters. Maryland has strict real-property laws which effectively give property owners the right to let their buildings rot. It's a big problem in Baltimore. Real estate ends up in an ownership "limbo" where no one takes responsibility for it. That's why some neighborhoods look like they've been bombed. Typically the owner goes bankrupt or gets foreclosed, a creditor (typically a bank or even the city) becomes the owner but they just sit on it and no one maintains the building. The building very quickly becomes open to casual entry by junkies, at some point the roof gives out, water damage occurs, roof collapses, the structural issues follow making the building un-sellable and requiring it to be demolished. Of course all other properties in the area suffer consequences from this and it becomes a downward spiral for the whole neighborhood. I used to live not far from that college. When it was running it was well-maintained and tidy-- an asset to the neighborhood. It's a pity that something could not be worked out to at least keep the building secure and in operation.

Great background information, very interesting. People don't want to hear it but the citizens of Baltimore keep voting for the same people that ushered in this decayed state. And what do you know, they keep getting more of it! The problem is with city leadership, enough with the excessive sympathy for the junkies and criminals. Take a zero tolerance stance and clean that place up!
@spuriustadius5034
2 жыл бұрын
@@ChristopherLeBlancArtAndDesign The urban decay you're talking about is caused by a complex mix of many factors, starting with white flight, extending through the heroin/crack/oxy epidemic, and systematic disinvestment. "Getting tough" and mass incarceration has *never* worked. It's been tried in Baltimore and elsewhere. If it had _actually_ worked, it would have been replicated everywhere by now. In fact, "getting tough" backfires. Why did the 2015 riots that could have burned down the city occur? Because the police decided to "get tough" on Freddie Gray and murdered him in the process-- that was the last straw in a long history of police abuse.

As someone who’s from Baltimore, I’d just want to comment on the fact that Dan’s content does highlight the dark parts of the city, and it’s not all that terrible; it’s not all that great either. I think Dan does an amazing job at showcasing what needs to be explored, what needs to be shown and what needs to be brought to the attention of the public on what places need to be fixed (if that’s ever even possible to do). In all, if you’re not from Baltimore, and enjoy Dan’s content, I just hope everyone keeps that in mind. Who would want any of this stuff? It all has a stench you can't clean away, and anything with crevices (table legs, gym equipment, those old worthless monitors, etc) likely has things living in it. Plus heroin users would probably only sell when desperate for a fix and who would feel comfortable taking money out to give them for something? Many of them are likely just in a bad place but others would be desperate enough to rob someone. Also, that building was almost definitely abandoned by the college probably immediately. Even in perfect shape it would cost more than the building to fix, with lead paint, asbestos, and fire/safety code violations that didn't exist when first built. The best the bank or real estate company can hope for is a developer will buy it and knock it down, but even that would cost so much more money than building some abandoned row houses. It's depressing considering Baltimore city's rich history. But it's been on a downward slope ever since people began to move for the suburbs in the 50s and 60s.

Dan, I saw this college years ago before it had gained too much attention to the fact that it could be accessed, right before the first fire, and it was in perfect condition, nothing like this...like everyone had just vanished.

Blows my mind they would leave behind those incredible science models and replicas. Those things are expensive and it’s not like they ever become obsolete. I guess it would have cost more to pack everything and take inventory than to just trash it.

Omg at the end when you asked if it was someone standing there I thought you were talking about the bright green thing on the other side of the closest door... I thought it was someone's sleeve standing like 2 metres from you. It's amazing how anxious this makes me when I know you obviously made it out ok. I had to pause for a second. Also I was POSITIVE for a bit that the shiny part of that blanket in the room where someone was staying most recently was the top of someone's head - like curly brown hair? Ooof what a terrifying and wonderful tour thank you so much Dan~

I stayed at a semi-abandoned college once on a school trip as it was cheap. They were using it as a hotel, but nothing had been renovated. It was musty, some of the heaters either wouldn't turn on, or wouldn't turn off, and there were some parts of the building that were chained off due to damage. It was really weird, but bats liked the upper floors. It was still habitable, but barely. I think the place I stayed at did become a school again, but I don't know if the residence building ever got repaired. Really creepy.

Love this, great job as always Dan Bell! Baltimore I think is an interesting city if you give it a chance, and I like the mid-atlantic region in general. I'm from the Midwest which has nice architecture, but this part of the country has east-coast architecture which intrigues me, often classical inspired since this is the area where some of America's oldest cities are.
