The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples is about the respect and recognition of the human rights of Indigenous peoples. It’s the result of almost 25 years of collaboration between UN member states and Indigenous peoples from around the world. Indigenous leaders from Canada played a significant role in its development, including drafting and negotiating.

1982 - Work begins on draft declaration
2007 - UN adopts the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
2010 - Canada endorses the Declaration
2016 - Canada commits to implementing the Declaration
2020 - Canada introduces the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act
2021 - The Act becomes law and work to implement begins and continues
