I've started my minimalist journey this year. I knew Christmas was going to be a challenge because I have 30 years of accumulated decor. I brought down everything and only put out my favorites. It's very calming not having Christmas decor everywhere and in every room. I gave an extra tree to a friend and sold a bunch on marketplace for basically nothing just to get it out of the house. I was in Hobby Lobby today and people were in full blown Christmas mode filling their carts. I only bought two ornaments for gifts and felt so proud of myself.

I finally gave up on incandescent, but they are still my favorite. I switched to fairy lights on my tree. It is totally overloaded with about 1200 lights, but it's nice not to see thick wires, it's cheaper to run ⚡, and they all work on one remote. I've crushed them down in the tree for the past 3 years for storage now and have yet to blow a string. Would definitely recommend trying them out. I do have them zip tied and separated by section for easy assembly and tear down.

I am not a minimalist. What I do is to put away any daily ornaments and replace it with Christmas ornaments. I live in a small one bedroom apartment. My bedroom is normally decorated in teals and aqua shades. I didn't want the regular reds and greens in there. So last year, I went to resale shops and looked for table-top decorations that I liked that had whites, blues and creams. This way when I wake up, I don't feel that this room loses the quieter feel that I established.

After finding through the years it has been difficult for me to declutter Christmas decor in Dec with so much going on, I planned in Dec 2021 that in Sept 2022 I would declutter said Christmas decor. I worked on it for a few weeks and boxed up donations and put in my trunk right away. I did wait to donate until end of Oct when places start accepting Christmas decor but it was out of the house. Starting to decorate today and it is a joy and breeze to find everything in each designated bin and with the clutter and excess gone. Dawn has changed my life. For me, when it comes to seasonal decor, LESS IS MORE. When a space is decorated to the hilt, not only is it a lot of work (hang, clean, store, etc.), it's also visually overwhelming -- which, for me, detracts from the enjoyment. When I put out just a few fave items, I get the best of both worlds: a warm, festive yet relaxing sanctuary.

I haven't decorated yet for Christmas. The plan was to get that done during my 4 day Thanksgiving vacation. It's Sunday afternoon and it hasn't happened yet, it might still happen today. When my kids moved out of the house, we started rotating who hosts the various holiday meals. At that time, my husband and I brought out ALL of our decorations and let the kids pick what they wanted. The decorations that I have used the past few years fit in one small drawer in my living room and the tree is stored in a sweater box in my craft room. The 2' tree that I use holds ornaments made by my high school biology teacher and by my father. My father taught at the same school and our families were friends. The redware ornaments from my biology teacher were our Christmas Cards from them over the years. My father made hand tooled leather goods and I turned the leather jewelry he made into ornaments. The tree skirt is some crochet work created by my great, great, great grandmother.

We (meaning ME--my husband doesn't really want to be involved in it) never decorate for Christmas until after Thanksgiving. We've been minimizing for almost seven years, and we're down to two medium-sized bins, a tree in a box, and a wreath bag! (We retired to our smaller, forever home in 2017, and despite bailing out a lot before the move, we have steadily weeded out even more Christmas decorations each year. Most of what we have left we've had for DECADES--mostly sentimental stuff.) Once in a while, I get something charming for the tree or table, but mostly I get scented candles, etc., that give us the scent memories that make us think of Christmases past, when our parents were still here & the kids were young. It's amazing how much seasonal scents bring a rush of memories to mind!

When our sinks get backed up, I always use the wet dry vac and it sucks out what's creating the clog. It is almost always the bathroom sink that gets clogged. Hair and gunk are usually the culprits. We need to purchase one of those air compressors. Because we have four house cats, are adopting two rescue dogs (making it a total of three dogs in our home) and we are still trying to declutter the house, we are not planning on decorating. Last year we mostly stayed focused on the True meaning of Christmas without the decorations. We had each other, the Lord and our home and furbabies. It was one of the best Christmases ever.

Absolutely! I use a lot of textiles my mom and I have made over the years such as mini quilts, wall hangings, afghans. The fold up easily. I have to declutter a little Christmas every year as friends gift me some every year. All holiday/seasonal decorating is limited to great room area and a red quilt on our bed.

Def in the red right now. My mom passed away and I took all her decor or my dad would have taken it to goodwill…. But now I’m in the middle of figuring out what works for my house and what I actually like. Thanks for this video. ♥️ I feel like social media pushes more more more decor and it gets so overwhelming!

All my pre-lit trees are still working I’ve had them for 16 years. I got them at Home Depot Black Friday special. They have them every year. Declutter Christmas decorations a few years back and I put out exactly what I have. The house is festive and everyone enjoys it. 🌲 ❤

I definitely plan on using your tips for holiday decorations. I find the Christmas ornaments particularly challenging to declutter. I don't currently decorate the bedrooms. Last year, instead of buying holiday pillows that are impossible to store flat, I bought holiday throw pillow covers that zip on. Covering my current pillows kept me from overwhelming my storage and space. It felt festive and they store flat. A couple of snowflake throw pillows really made a difference!

Hope you find your Grandma's tablecloth. ❤️ I have also struggled with the desire to do more decor for all holidays as my Mom did, which I loved and enjoyed, but don't feel like I have the bandwidth, storage, or capacity to keep all the little hands off of everything during the year. So I only decorate for Christmas, and even then, we keep a gate around the Christmas tree with so many fragile ornaments and there are a few handmade tabletop ornament trees I don't put out because the kids will constantly pull it apart. So looking forward to the times I can put it all out and not be like a watch dog on all the decor. It really cheers me up to see the holiday decor around the house.

So exciting that Dorothy fundraiser is giving a well to much needed families. Congrats on that Dawn. As far as your red table cloth, maybe ask your Mom and Diana if maybe you did lend it to them. Simple decorating for the holidays is a great idea. You've given us incentive to de-clutter more of our holiday decor. Thanks for sharing !! Your kids are adorable. Always fun to see them.

I love Christmas so much I watched this in July! ; - D I buy a fresh wreath for inside now instead of a tree for that lovely real pine scent with fewer needles. *TIPS FROM THE VIDEO:* 1) A separate container for sentimental Christmas items; 2) Kitchen gloves to fluff artificial tree branches; 3) Pops of red for festive impact; 4) Zig zagging colors between shelves. *Christmas is magic!* 😃❤🎄

I did cluttered my Christmas stuff last year I brought everything over to my son and daughter-in-law’s house and we went through it all together. Also, I brought my parents Christmas decorations, as well, because my mom has already passed away and my dad moved into assisted living. It brought some sweet memories for my son and he shared the different gadgets and decorations with my grandchildren and shared all the memories with them it was so nice to see. They went through and kept what they wanted and then donated what they didn’t want. I live by myself and so, like you, I love going to other places and see all the beautiful decorations. I enjoy it more because I know I don’t have to clean it up! As far as your red tablecloth, the first thing I thought of being that it is red we have a lot of holidays that can cover a red tablecloth. Just wondered if you might have put it in another holiday box? Thank you for all you do, Dawn!! ❤

Last year I decluttered! Now I only decorate my porch, fireplace, and put up a tree. My tree is 9 ft and this year we just left out the middle section and it looks perfect! I do have pillow covers for my normal couch pillows. So I put two on my bed and two in the living room. Red pops do the trick! That’s a great tip!

Debbi here. My hubby and I are almost empty nesters. I found that the annual hanging ornaments on the tree was no longer enjoyable, so I solved the problem by wiring them onto the tree. Then I just store the entire tree in a storage bag in the basement until the next year. It takes five minutes to unbag the tree, fluff the branches and plug in. Done! I have streamlined household decorations also. I love your idea about using color in a zigzag pattern. That makes sense.

I was a bit overwhelmed this year thinking of how much help I need to do everything so I simplified as I unpacked. I have almost no decor peices around the house but each bedroom has a skinny tree, I have a garland, wreath and our Christmas tree in the living area and it's a very small living area so it feels very festive without clutter :) I love reading the comments, it's a great group!

Hi, I have followed you for a few years now. Got rid of 50% of our belongings. Yep! Six months ago I went through all the xmas decorations. And decided to give away the tree (we used it for 10 years and twinkle lights still working and then shipped it together with decorations to the Philippines to a family without a tree. They have had it up since September and all the people in the street just love it. I then found another family who did not have a tree last year in my neighborhood so I gave them one of our smaller trees with decorations for them to decorate. So what did we do. We had a family meeting and decided to order a new one off Amazon with new decorations. We simplified it to a more adult decore. We are out of the kiddy season. We plan to have it up and my eldest daughter has invited her adult friends for drinks and eats. And yes doing a xmas date dunbt cake (everyone loves it). , charcuterie boards etc. Move with the seasons of life.

We do lots of Christmas decor outside. The neighbors and children love it and a Christmas tree inside. My daughter loves to put up our Christmas tree on Halloween since we personally don’t care much for that holiday and we love to have our tree up for Thanksgiving. My daughter loves to decorate her room for Christmas and sometimes puts up her own 3ft Christmas tree with puppy ornaments. Love this season and how it reminds us of our Jesus our Lord and Savior . 💕

I am one of those who has/had a TON of Christmas totes! I listened to your video on Christmas and asked self what do I want my Christmas to be like. LESS STRESSFUL was my first thought. So when I asked husband to get the Christmas totes out, he got stressed out, I got stressed out, and it hit me, this is a good place to start. I put out all the things I love first, the I just packed all the leftovers that I didn't use last year and didn't use this year back in the totes and donated them! Man it was hard, but now two weeks later, I don't miss it! Or the stress around it!
