Having done the Northern peaks in The Rhinogydd over the last couple of years, attention turned to the Southern Hills. A challenging route from Ganllwyd over pathless and rugged terrain brough us to the foot of Y Llethr, the highest in the range. After a short but steep climb, we found ourselves on the wide grassy summit. A stark contrast from the northern hills, the southern part is rolling, grassy peaks with mostly gentle slopes. A short descent brought us to the narrow ridge line of Crib-y-rhiw, with glorious views of our ascent route. After summiting the peak of Diffwys, we set about descending to Cwm Mynach to pick up a forestry track which would lead us back to Ganllwyd. There was just time for a dip at the Black Waterfalls on our way back. A cracking day and getting to know these mountains has been a pleasure. Can't wait to return.
