I took Tabitha to my parents house for the day so we could spend time with them but also so I could finally film a little more of the stone circle and areas that tourists come to Avebury in Wiltshire to see.
If you don't know already, I grew up in Avebury which is a Neolithic World Heritage site and the only stone circle in the world to house a village. I grew up in the dead centre of the village in a house made of chalk and sarsen stone. The Avebury stones are sarsen and you can only find this in a few places in the world.
Avebury is older than the Great Pyramid of Giza, dating back to around 2850 BC. It is almost 5,000 years old so growing up here was a real treat - especially since I could open bedroom windows out onto the circle every morning.
There is still a lot of mystery around Avebury and why it is there, who built it and what it was used for but there is a lot of speculation about it being used for ceremonies, rituals or as something else entirely! The circle itself was originally one large circle with a henge around it which is a large deep trench dug out (hence Avebury Stone Henge). There would have then been two smaller circles in the middle (one of which is still there today) and a long avenue (which you can walk down) leading up to the circles.
Over time the stones became forgotten and eventually torn down by religious groups who then ironically built a lot of the houses around the village out of them.
Alexander Keiller who lived in my family home and was also the pioneer behind Marmalade was the man who brought Avebury back to what you see today and spend years digging up and re-standing the stones in avebury.
Anyway, that is enough of the history of Avebury and time to watch the video. In the video I visit Avebury Manor and have a look at some of the historical buildings in the village before heading off for a walk around the stone circle. After that we head back to my parents house for a tour of their pretty garden which is smack bang in the middle of the circle and thought to have a hoard of treasure and graves buried deep underneath it!
