Ephesus is an ancient city famous for several monumental buildings. The most important and famous of all is the Temple of Artemis (550 BC) which is one of the Seven Womnders of the Ancient World. Other important historical sites are the Library of Celsus and The Great Theater of Ephesus that can hold 24,000 spectators. It was said to be the Gateway of Asia and the 4th greatest city of its times after Rome, Alexandria of Egypt and Antioch of Syria. Ephesus retained its name until today although it is nolonger inhabited as a city. It was one of the oldest Greek settlements on the Aegean Sea, and later the provicial seat of the Roman government of Asia. As one of the most complete ancient city of Europe, it is one of the best ancient ruins to see. Walking though the routes of the city can bring you back to what life must have been centuries ago.
