I always find myself back to JetBrains even when I try different languages (python, web development), I just end up getting the appropriate jetbrain product eventually (even after trying the recommended IDE). The only one of their product I haven't tried fully yet is DataGrip.

Hi Jean, thanks for the comment. I would definitely suggest giving Datagrip a try. Previously I found myself setting up different workbenches for different database technologies, but Datagrip has largely solved that problem. Its kind of my all purpose DB workbench at this point. I'd suggest giving it a try. Cheers

How do you compare IntelliJ with Eclipse in term of developing Java Maven project?

Hi Qiao, I feel that Eclipse is a great editor, but what sets it apart from IntelliJ is the number of plugins available. IntelliJ has thousands of available plugins that provide additional value. Hope this helps.

There are so many comparable free IDE's out there that the price is not worth it.

Hi hevo, Fair point. I think if you can get what you need from an alternative IDE, you should stick to it!

I can't get myself to pay for Ultimate because Community version is so good (also If they didn't have a community version I would just use something free). Also at work getting approval to used the payed version is a hurdle. The price point is also so high I can't imagine ever paying it, but I guess software devs are willing to waste money based on the "it makes me more productive so I make back the difference" argument which enables the toxic (but effective) "charge either free or crazy high" pricing model. I highly doubt the output of someone using ultimate edition would be that much more than someone with the community ediiton to warrant paying the price on a purely utility argument. Also it would feel bad to support anything using that sort of premium pricing model that is all to common. 50 - 100 would be reasonable and I would maybe pay that but the overall profits would be much less because some people are willing to pay that ridiculous price. So I, a reasonable consumer get punished by people being suckers to the "charge free and/or premium" pricing model. Also this stuff can often go under business expenses where people are not price conscious at all and SAAS really benefits from dubious "adds productivity we will make it back" logic (sometimes it isn't dubious but I think people accept it as default true without really thinking about the added value vs cost). So they can charge whatever. I wish software devs would stop being suckers to this way of thinking and become a little more price conscious so companies stop succeeding with this sort of predatory pricing model.

149€/year for IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate, or 249€/year for all of the IDEs ... How can you think this is too much, as your job is about development. I believe a small investment like that is great. It also depends what your daily tasks are, but if you need slightly more than 2 languages and basic auto-completion ; if you use Live Templates, Plugins, Git/Docker/Cloud/SSH/FTP... integration, an extremely good debugger and many more, maybe you can finally see why this is useful. So, maybe this product is not for you and what you need is simply Visual Studio Code.

@@spiritum1192 For me it's a combination of the cost vs how good community edition is already (the spring support looks decent but that alone doesn't seem worth the upgrade), and me being against the no mid range pricing scheme that is based around reeling people in to an extremely high cost subscription. I really don't like premise of squeezing as much money as possible of the people willing to pay over selling at a price that is reasonable (and therefore will provide more overall utility) to more people. The problem is the class of people willing to pay is willing to pay such an exorbitant amount that it is the most profitable to sell at this price. I've noticed a lot of monetization moving this direction and I don't like the trend, it forces you to either pay more than is reasonable or just not support the thing at all, no option to support at a rate you find reasonable. One easy example is many video games moving to lottery style gambling mechanics for aesthetics where a small % of overall user base spends exorbitant amounts of money but for the average player that sort of monetization makes the game less enjoyable. The more people rationalize "it helps me with my job it's expensive but I'll pay it" the more companies will charge and continue this sort of practice.
