What a lucky catch back in 1989! My wife, three kids, and I bumped into Mike in a local grocery store. The Army was reassigning me and we were driving on I90 past Big Timber and Livingston. The kids were hungry, so we stopped. I told Mike I loved his Sharps and old west guns stories. He demurred, and I persisted by telling my wife and kids who he was, and that the best part of those magazines I bought was the Mike Venturino articles. He tried to change the subject by asking about us. I gave him a quick summary, then tried to get back to guns. But he paid attention to my wife and the kids. It was enjoyable. I retired from the Army last September. Over these past 34 years we often stopped at that grocery store hoping to catch Mike again. I also wrote to him as his subjects “needed” my attention. He always remembered I was a soldier and asked how old the kids were getting to be. What a gentleman, and a super interesting guy. We miss him.

I remember an article of his, a review of the Beretta 92 inox or something similar. He started the piece off with an anecdote about his father’s advice to help build his credit. His father told him to get a small loan and pay it off quickly to build credit. Unfortunately, the young man encountered a gun store on the way home from the bank that day. A pocket full of cash and a gun store, a tale as old as time.

Wonderful tribute to Mike Venturino, thank you. Mike's passing hits me as hard as Elmer Keith's in 1984, and Skeeter Skelton's back in 1988. MIke belonged in that same rare, unique class of writiers, who wrote reference-matierial-articles with pure-story-teller-fun, the same type of writer as Elmer and Skeeter. Mike will never be forgotten, as his writing will endure, but he will sure be missed. I look forward to you compilation book of Mike's articles and GREATLY appreciate all of you at FMG for doing that.

I’ve been reading his stuff since I was a kid and he was with the other magazine and always enjoyed his writing except for two articles I can remember- He really hurt me when he said the .45 Colt sucks even though after I thought about I reluctantly agreed he was probably right in the modern day with smokeless powder loads but I always wanted to meet him so we could argue about his article on the .44 Special not being special… I’ll be looking forward to the compilation books coming out.

Hi Ron. I goaded Mike and Taffin into an “arguement” over the .44 Special and it was great fun. They did it in the spirit of having fun, but it did turn up some interesting points! Roy

Thanks guys. And Roy is right. There's nobody to replace Duke. He was the one writer primarily responsible for getting me interested the old stuff instead of the latest greatest stuff. Hard to think of him as being gone, but as you correctly-pointed out, he left a mountain of literary legacy from which we can still learn.

His WWII small arms series was a source of great information. I was very sorry to hear of his passing. I always worried about his health, and it's a shame that we lost him to heart disease.
