The boys are waiting for you to run again! Although on the other side I am sad, because due to the damn covid-19 current Formula 1 drivers will not be able to say goodbye as you deserved it! My wife and I had a wonderful twenty minutes with Sir Sterling at The Monterey Historics at Laguna Seca with nobody else while he waited for his son to make a phone call from pay phone at the track near the petrol depot. I scampered away to quickly locate a pen for an autograph. Upon my short return, the two of them were chatting like old friends! We both smile fondly on our short but epic time with the greatest driver to have never been World Champion. When he graciously signed a photograph of himself from a Jesse Alexander item I had just purchased, his parting remark was a simple “Cheerio!” R.I.P. Sir Sterling.

Ese día fue muy probable la siguiente escena: Juan Manuel Fangio: - ¡Por fín llegaste, pibe! ¡Ya era hora! ¡Cuanto me alegra verte otra vez! Stirling & Suzie came to Tasmania in 1992 to compete in the inaugural Targa Tasmania in their Mustang GT500! Unfortunately Stirling had an accident before the event whilst undertaking a recce of the stages, and ended up in hospital! As Clerk of Course for that event, I was asked to pick Stirling up from hospital which having grown up in Motorsport was a huge buzz for me! Imagine my surprise when I found a rather bruised and battered man standing in his underpants! I said “Excuse me, I’m looking for Stirling Moss! To my astonishment, the gentleman turned around and said “You have found me old boy”. We both had a good laugh at this rather indignant meeting! Stirling continued to get dressed and offered me a pair of old shoes. “You can have them. I’ve one a couple of GP’s in those” he said! I responded “With all due respect, I don’t want your smelly old shoes” He probably had but we broke into laughter again! Stirling (& Suzie) were magnificent people, but once the drivers door closed, this was Stirling’s office and he was as competitive as ever!

Although never a World Champion, he was THE Champion in many people's eyes. I read of and knew his exploits when I was a kid of 9 or 10 in Canada (not exactly a hotbed of Formula 1 in those days of the late 1950's!) and first got interested in motor racing, and knew of his experiences with Mercedes and Vanwall and Cooper. After his accident at Goodwood, I actually got to see him on TV, and what an absolute gentleman!! He lived his life as one of the classiest motor racing people EVER!! Rest in peace Sir Stirling, and so pleased you lived until 90 years old, when many drivers of your generation didn't live past their 30's.

Years ago Stirling told me about racing in the Empire Trophy races on the Isle of Man in the 1950s. He was driving a Jaguar C type and in practice the team experimented with what Stirling called Ship to Shore radio supplied by PYE. From the TT grandstand you took a right turn onto Ballanard Road which is still bumpy today. The road would see off the valves and rendered communication useless. So pit stops were a bit bizarre with mechanics servicing the car and PYE technicians changing vales. Years later ,at Goodwood I saw him on crutches, I asked what he'd done ,and the answer was...Scooter, Roundabout...Diesel !!! For someone who had been in a coma he still had a good memory and would pick my face out in a crowd ,and say Hello old boy ,how things on the Isle of Man. A true gentleman and fantastic driver. RIP Stirling.

By the time I began to follow F1 (1964), sir Stirling had already retired, but his name was constantly mentioned, and exploits of how he would take out an unfamiliar car and beat the best qualifying times. He would come in after a race and his brakes would only be half gone. He was one of the few men I have ever respected. Murray has retired, Stirling is gone.... the world is poorer.
