As mentioned in the video, this technique takes lane conditions out of the equation. While it’s difficult to produce high scores, they will have carry brought to their advantage. The only issue with this technique is that it takes a toll on the bowler's elbow and wrist. It's why bowlers who use that technique don't do it for long, because they usually have a relatively short career length as a professional bowler.

@@psychonautics4205 There is no such of a thing as a "pocket" in spinning. Pocket entails a ball entering an area of the rack. In spinning, the ball plows through what they call the "rail" which is the 1-3-6-10 pins for right-handers. It is all about deflection, and nothing regarding carry.

Great video Alan Huang. I've never seen the Helicopter/UFO bowling style. When I was in Okinawa or Japan about 1992 is when I started to hear about it but never seen until today thanks to your video. The ball is skidding so lane oil isn't a factor but unlike a straight ball the spin is creating action and more deflection. I love bowling competitively: scratch bowlers, hook, two handers, it doesn't matter, let's go out and have fun... Show a little more of this style please ...

Her average these days (after 30+ years) ranges between 167-170 per year. Now I see why she has such good carry down the lanes, excessively oily or not. Verry interesting.

Not really, as a right hand he enters the pocket in a brooklyn type trajectory... and how often do you leave the 5 pin on brooklyn's? may leave the 7-10 if it comes thru the nose... but with that slow speed and deflection spin... i could see just as many strikes for just anyone. Wouldn't make the change personally, but my wife throws the same way minus the spinning, this small tweak might get her more strikes.

When I first started bowling I threw a backup ball. Instead of taking the ball up and right I took the ball up and toward the small finger. Indeed I left a lot of five pins when I hit the pocket. Spare bowling was easier especially ten pins. I now hook the ball and miss lots of ten pins.

Spinner wasn't invented just 30 years ago, the taiwanese have been using it for a long time. The condition determines if the spinner has the advantage or not. On a wall shot, the hook bowler will keep striking with a huge area of play. Spinner suffers when they couldn't get the right pin mix. Both have their pros and cons. Its actually a myth that you need alot of strength to hook. In today's condition, there are way more oil on the pattern and way more aggressive cover, the soft hand instead of the power crank release is giving the needed consistency and forgiveness for best results. Recent years have seen urethane balls used by many powerful bowlers.
@SteelcityinNY
3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely correct on not needing a lot of strength to hook. I think in today's day and age of bowling, people confuse hooking and cranking. Cranking is an "exaggerated" hook...effective for those that do it well...but crankers don't last long before their career ends or they are relegated to more of a roll, or hook. The hook is actually more natural and effortless than the straight shot! Foe me to make an honest comparison between hook vs "UFO"...or "helicopter"...you'd have to show me that the pin weight - all parameters - are the same.

It's a product of their environment. Lots of centers in Asia a few decades ago that had not much a clue about lane maintenance or oiling patterns. If there was even oil on the lanes. Same thing here in the US... You could almost tell what house a local bowler called home by the way he/she threw the ball and the way and area he/she played the lanes. This was an effective solution to a problem of spotty lane conditions. They definitely wouldn't learn this if they had the typical "US house" shot.

This and backspinning the ball go completely against the laws of phsyics. The ball actually slows down some as it goes down the lane. Forward rotation of the ball actually makes it speed up a little going down the lane, thus generating more power or momentum on the shot. Spinning and backspinning depends on a lot of pin mixing and luck. Hooking, or forward rotating the ball does not as much so it is a much better technique if you are looking for consistant higher scores. Yes, you have to learn to "read" the lanes, but once you do that you will be a much better bowler.

The spinner looks pretty much like a straight ball as shown here. I don't see how a spinning straight ball increases strike percentage over a non spinning straight ball if both shots enter the pocket at exactly the same placement and angle. Perhaps spinning increases accuracy? I don't know. It is known by scientific study that the highest strike percentage shot is a ball that enters the pocket at an angle that can't be attained by even a straight ball thrown cross alley. And yes, if the lane is dry or the oil pattern is difficult the straight ball gains a consistency advantage because oil patterns don't drastically affect a straight ball. How many 300s are bowled with a straight spinner? The main reason tricky oil patterns were devised is to keep the scoring potential down, because pro hook bowlers will shoot 300 a lot of the time if the oil pattern is easy. They don't want pro tournament matches with ties for 300 all the time. So they have to create a difficult lane condition to make 300s rare. I wonder if a weight block can be positioned in a lightweight ball to make a spinning shot precess into a hook downlane.

@@galejenkins102 Think outside of regular bowling. What would you do if the lanes at every establishment in your country are oiled from the foul line to the head pin? You have no friction! You can crank the softest of bowling balls until the cows come home, and it'll still roll straight. In this kind of an oil pattern, pin deflection is better than pin carry. Which is why in this type of oil pattern, spinning is more effective. Why do the Taiwanese oil the lanes like this? Because the lanes were always made of wood, and poorly maintained. So they oil the entire length to keep the wood from wearing down too quickly.
@galejenkins102
3 жыл бұрын
@@yuppiehi that's partially true but my family owns a center that I have bowled in since I was able to walk and I have bowled on many sport shots and burnt house shots and no matter the condition there is always a line to play you just have to find it. When its oiled to the head pin you get the strongest ball you got and sand it to get some traction early and play right into the pocket. Deflection is bad 99 percent of the time because you're not stringing strikes but I would venture to say it would make leaving easy spares instead of strikes and keeping a score up that way. I think I may actualy try that in our machine I'll oil to the head with lets say about 30 ml of oil cutter to gutter at 1:1 ratio and I'll bowl on it and see what I can make of it.
