How To Cook Cholar Dal - Bengali Style Chana Dal Recipe

Ingredients - Serves 6 to 7
* 225 gm/ 1 measuring cup chana dal
* 1 inch long cinnamon stick
* 2 dry bay leaves
* 2 green cardamoms
* 2 cloves
* 2 dry red chillies (optional)
* 1 tsp cumin seeds
* 1/4 th tsp hing (asafoetida). Please do not add too much as it will make the curry bitter
* 1 + 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
* 1/2 tsp chilli powder (kashmiri chilli powder)
* 1 tsp ground cumin (jeera powder)
* 1/2 tsp garam masala powder

* 12 gm/ 1 tsp finely grated ginger
* 1 tbsp/15 gm golden raisins soaked in water for 10 mins
* 15 gm/1 tbsp chopped frozen coconut (optional)
* 1 & 1/2 tsp salt
* 2 tsp sugar
* 1 tsp heaped ghee

* 1 tbsp + 1 tsp oil
* 3 cups hot water
Method-
* wash cholar dal and soak in water for an hour. Drain water, wash it one more time and add in pressure cooker
* add turmeric powder, cinnamon stick, dry bay leaf, drop of oil, hot water
* pressure cook for 12 mins (regular pressure cooker)/15 mins on high (Instant Pot)
* heat oil in pot, add dry bay leaf, green cardamoms, cloves and stir for a few seconds
* add hing, stir for a second and add grated ginger, stir for a few seconds
* add a splash of water, add turmeric powder, chilli powder, cumin powder and stir for a few seconds
* add the cooked dal along with salt and sugar
* keep on low heat and let it simmer
* while dal is simmering, add oil in a small pan and fry the coconut pieces on medium low heat till golden brown. Take them out in a bowl
* add golden raisins, fried coconut and garam masala powder to the dal
* to that same pan in which you fried coconut melt ghee on medium heat
* add cumin seeds and fry till they darken in color (not too dark as then they will get bitter)
* add this ghee cumin mix to dal
* Cholar dal is usually served with poori/paratha/roti. I also have it with toasted bread and even rice.
