Whether your BACKPACKING in QUITO, ECUADOR for one day or several its mandator that VIRGEN DE EL PANECILLO is on your TRAVEL ITINERARY. But there are options when getting to the top of the hill which the giant MONUMENT sits on. You can take the safer option which is by TAXI or you can take the more dangerous yet scenic option which is walking. I chose the latter and boy was I not disappointed in spite of a near FATAL DOG ATTACK.
I explained to my HOSTEL that I wanted to see VIRGEN DE EL PANECILLO, they immediately suggested that I take a taxi because the neighbourhood which the monument resides in is dangerous. Lots of muggings take place and its not safe for tourists. Being a KZitemr (and a bit of an idiot) I decided to walk through the neighbourhood and up the hill, I knew it was going to be scenic and it didn't disappoint. If you are wanting to see the monument and walk I would suggest traveling early in the morning, most of the criminal elements will be asleep. I encountered a few vagrants but nothing life threatening. I was however warned by several members of the public not to film with my camera. I decided to ignore this advice, electing to film as long as possible till I felt like it was no longer safe. As you can see by the footage I got some incredible shots.
The only real danger I encountered was some WILD DOGS near the top of the hill. Now, these dogs are kept by house owners to keep thieves away, but if you are walking by a house you will surely get charged at by a dog. I was very lucky with my encounter and was saved from a savaging by a local lady. I do know of a girl in my hostel who was bitten by one such dog. Be safe and carry a stick with you to deter any dogs on your journey.
"In the 1950s, local authorities and religious leaders stood looking at El Panecillo, a loaf-shaped, 656-foot-high (200 meters) hill in central Quito. They agreed that the hilltop, visible throughout the city, was the perfect place to erect a statue. After years of debate, they decided that the statue would be a large replica of the Virgin of Quito, a 48-inch-tall wooden sculpture created by Bernardo de Legarda in 1734. Designed and built by the Spanish sculptor Agustín de la Herrán Matorras, the statue is made from 7,400 pieces of aluminum, with each piece clearly numbered. The statue was then disassembled, shipped to Ecuador, and assembled again on top of the base. The statue was finished on March 28, 1975."
