During a pit stop on Kebler Pass in western Colorado, I take a moment to discuss the ecology and medicine of Western Sweet Cicely / Osmorhiza occidentalis (Apiaceae) while in seed and flower in the height of summer. I discuss the plant in the context of the greater southern Rockies also where you can find it's relatives, like in Southern Appalachia. This plant smells like Anise and sometimes is also called Anise Root because of it's aromatic similarity to Anise / Pimpinella anisum also in the Carrot family. I also speak a little bit to knowing the Carrot family and understanding some aspect of being aware that there are poisonous members of this family (this is not a full video on poison ID though).
As always, forage and gather with caution and never taste anything unless you for sure know it is not poisonous! And, this is not medical advice and I am not trailed to legally give it.
Sign up to come learn from me in person at my Rocky Mountain field ecology courses. The next one is in August 2024!
