With respect to build quality: over time, Tesla has been improving build quality. When you showed the exterior of the car I saw chrome door handles, which identifies the car as a 2020 or earlier car. A newer Model 3 with the black door handles might have better build quality. I think most people are expecting the new Model 3 cars built in the factory in Germany to have excellent build quality (although there might be a learning period so the earliest cars might not be up to scratch).

And yeah, the fact we get software updates seemingly weekly which generally fix or improve things is extremely valuable. Also, the Superchargers and simple home charging (which also probably applies to the ID3 too), Tesla mobile service, and abundance of other, knowledgeable owners make owning it a no-brainer.

Not sure about where you are, but in the US the Model 3 is offered in RWD at $47k vs. the MY LR starts at $66k now. I originally planned to go with a Model Y, but can't justify nearly $20k extra for a slightly larger vehicle. I'll grab a Model Y once they launch a RWD version in the US in the future or when prices come back down for them. When I test drove the two of them, I enjoyed driving the model 3 a lot more as well, but the MY is def more of a practical vehicle. Even Elon Musk has stated multiple times that their vehicle prices are embarrassingly high right now.

That's the fundamental difference between a Tesla and all other EVs on the market, and frankly, I think that's why they are so ahead of the game. When someone puts their foot down on the accelerator in a Tesla, the G-forces experienced makes everyone. EVERYONE. React with an "oh my god." You go back 5 years and every single first time sitting in a Tesla or first time driving a Tesla and you hit the acceleration and not a single person is not left speechless. Then you go ride in the other EVs, and while they may perform to an extent, it fails to encompass the speed felt. A Model 3 performance is by no means a cheap car, but it's effectively the upper end trim of a mass production model (inflation and supply chain issues affecting prices aside). For it to then wow people unconditionally, relative to all other models in the market, is what allows Tesla to "market" to people without spending any money on ads. Sure they have other, clever ways, of "marketing", but that statement: "oh my god" is alone enough to speak a thousand words, tell a thousand stories, and sell a thousand vehicles. Until legacy auto is able to provide that kind of a rush with their own models, I fail to see them "catching up" as "competition".
@cgamiga

.. and the amazing thing to me as a driver, not just the acceleration, but the fine sensitive control both accel and regen.. even with the awesome power, you can be super-smooth and gentle, as long as your foot fine-motor control is good :) The regen is just about right- strong, but not too harsh; and does very nice job coming to smooth stop w/ hold mode, not jerky at all, as good as I can do manually. Driving down winding mountain curves is a blast, super control accel & decel, like stick shift engine braking but infinite speed low gear! Other EVs have strong regen and varied acceleration, but I don't think any have done a better job mixing raw power and finesse that Tesla have done. and the UI interaction/smoothness and features, and supercharging experience, should give a lot of other EV owners the same "oh my god" reaction (like vs VW's /Hyundai slow screen and horrible trip planning.)

@@cgamiga the irony is that Ford and GM likely do have app teams that make apps for Android and iOS and they have the knowledge and know how in satisfying customers at the phone level. They just have to then take that knowledge and apply it to the vehicle with the understanding that you're not building a car, but a smartphone on wheels. The moment they can fully abandon the idea of a car and embrace the idea of a smart phone, then I think they'll be able to succeed. Essentially, legacy car makers need to do the same thing Jobs did with the first iPhone. Be different. People who want EVs don't want a car. They are sick of cars. They want a platform that can grow to suit the needs of a rapidly changing world. That's why sales in China for LICE makers are doing poorly even for their EV models, because they're still building only cars. They're not getting it.

Not true about 100% all the time with no extra degradation. Tesla WANTS you to charge to 100% so BMS can be properly calibrated. LFP cells have a very low slope voltage curve and unless you regularly charge to 100% the BMS will lose ability to determine correct current range. Charging to 100% is still less than optimal for battery health as compared to 80%.

Looks like your car might be on some older firmware as they just enabled variable speed limit and motorway temp sign detection in the latest update. It's pretty flawed, but it's a start. Since I got my car in 2019 the whole screen has had a design change 3 times. Feels like a new car each time. Personally I like this, keeps things fresh, but some people may not. :) For the auto lane change, though we get a very limited version of Autopilot here in the UK, it is amazing for reducing fatigue on long journeys! By EU regulations, it must make 3 indicator blinks before moving over and move at x lateral rate, etc. etc. - Really cripples what we get compared to the US unfortunately.

Interesting to see someone in the UK experiencing the Tesla Model 3. Some of the things you mentioned (like speed limit recognition) have been completely resolved here in the United States. I think Tesla - now becoming a large global company - will need to increase their software teams to dedicate more resources to each country. It seems the US is ground zero for all of Tesla's latest features. For instance, FSD beta is starting to get pretty good here in the United States - but there have certainly been growing pains from the first iteration. i imagine the same will be true as it is rolled out to new countries.
@VoxelLoop
2 жыл бұрын
Oh man, how I could dream about that. In the UK the speed limit sign recognition regularly detects phantom signs or ones on incorrect roads. For example, you'll be on a 50mph road but a road that turns off yours will have a 30mph sign on it, this sign is at a near 90 degree angle to the car but as it passes it detects it and limits Autosteer down to the 'speed limit'. On motorways, last month they enabled the ability to read temporary road work signs on motorways as well as average speed limit signs on overhead signs which are on digital displays and can be changed. However... The car will set the speed limit back to 70 if it doesn't see a new sign after x number of seconds, resulting it changing to say 40 for road works, then changing back to 70 after a few seconds. In the UK the functionality of everything is pretty much crippled. The FSD package basically sums up to 'Confirmation-required automatic lane changes on specific roads' - Can't turn off confirmation, still have to confirm green lights, due to regulations it has a g-force limit which prevents it from taking even mediocre turns at speed, Smart Summon is limited to moving 20 meters per session and your phone must be within Bluetooth range to use it (You usually end up blocking its path as a result, if it doesn't hit the distance limit before it managed to reverse out of a parking bay), and I suppose to top it off, Navigate on Autopilot and automatic lane changes can only be used on 'Limited access' roads such as motorways, can't be used on any other multi-lane road. As much as I love my car, it's a little disheartening when I see the UK release notes for an update, then we get the same version in the UK and the release notes are: - Cold weather improvements ...And that's it. :)

@@VoxelLoop That is awful... We have SOME looming regulation hovering over Tesla's features here, but nothing like that. It sounds like UK regulatory authorities are exhaustively aggressive. I don't know or understand the atmosphere around loosening regulations in the UK, so I can't speak to that... but I will say... the current climate in the U.S. (while prone to a lot of lawsuits... the U.S. is a very lawsuit-happy country) allows for innovation to prosper. I have experienced some edge cases with FSD, but I love that I can just submit the video to Tesla and they can run it through their AI simulations. I hope Tesla is - at least - running shadow simulations on cars in the UK. I know they do this in the U.S. to prep next-gen software releases without putting it into the real world. I guess the only issue is that you don't really know how well something works in the real world until a real human experiences it. I hope the UK will loosen up a little bit. On another note, I hope all countries start creating autonomous lanes on highways --- much like the autobahn. I can only imagine -- the speed limit could be... only limited by the limits of the vehicle.

I am currently renting a model 3 and my biggest gripes is the bad navigation (no alternative route options such as Shortest/Fastest/Most efficient; no avoiding highways; not taking other charging operators into account on automatic route planning…), phantom braking, no speed limiter, wrong speed signs, cannot put in the cruise when standing still or in low speeds in most situations (unless you are on a marked road with good street markings) and a few mir other things. This makes the car not an option for me.

Until 2022, Performance Model 3 was slightly lower than long range model 3 and performance model 3 has slightly stiffer springs. However sometime in 2022 Tesla altered the build so performance model 3 has same suspension setup as long-range. The performance model y is still lower (just 0.5" about) than long range model y and has slightly stiffer springs. The performance cars also have larger wheels and lower profile tires.

I am willing to bet you will get a Tesla, probably the Model Y, because it has the hatch back option and a lot more space, not that the Model 3 doesn't have a lot of space. It has tons of space, it is just limited by the silly boot. If the Model 3 was a hatch back it would be the perfect hatchback in my opinion. BTW, the speed limit software update has fixed that problem with reading speed signs of all shapes and sizes, fixed or temporary. I have it on my Tesla Model 3 for a little over a month and it works perfectly now (UK). It was an odd thing to leave off the Tesla, considering my previous dumb vehicle of 10 years had it working perfectly. In some of your video clips on the motorway when you said the auto-lane changing wasn't working, that was because you were on a road that didn't support the lane changing option, that is when the double blue lines appear on either side of the car. It only works when there is a single blue line in the middle of the lane. That is when you are on a motorway like the M25, M3 etc. On A roads it doesn't work or shouldn't. There is a difference. The software package in the Tesla is by far the main thing that drew me to buying a Tesla. It works all the time, is intuitive, and makes the car what it is. Combined with the excellent mobile app, it is a brilliant. That is the key difference between a Tesla and any other car (EV or ICE). Oh! and the availability of fast super charging. Those three things make it the right choice!

You need to press stalk down fully for automatic lane change, you only push it down a bit, so it blinks 3 times and stops. It's user mistake. When you did it correctly, the car reacted correctly. When you give a certain input you can't expect the car to do something different, as a techie person you should know this.
