The Mall in Columbia is a super-regional mall located in the "new town" of Columbia, Maryland. The mall was originally built and opened in 1971 by the Rouse Company in the "Town Center" village of Columbia with the intention of being the centerpiece and primary gathering space for the town as a whole, which was also under development by Rouse. Boasting iconic spaceframe ceilings, lighting fixtures on its support columns, and fountains throughout, the mall was quite a sight to behold visually.
The mall would grow in size multiple times over the years, with both enclosed and open-air wings being added to the mall, bringing the mall up to super-regional level, serving both Columbia and the greater Central Maryland region. The mall has also undergone minor aesthetic renovations over its life as well, including the unfortunate removal of most of its fountains. Nonetheless, the mall continues to this day to serve the greater region as one of Central Maryland's few remaining thriving malls.
