Nature Reserv Bödakusten
In the nature reserve Bödakustens there are mighty sand dunes, lush deciduous forests and meadows rich in flora.
With 50 miles of Öland coast, there are beaches for everybody.
The reserve stretches from southern Byxelkrok down to Mensalvret and Byrum sandvik.
The south coastline consists of sandy beaches and dune areas. In the middle parts of the reserve there are mighty sand fields and dune areas where the wind over millennia has transported the grains of sand and built up the dunes which can be ten meters high and kilometers long.
In the 19th century, they tried to prevent sand drift by planting pine and balsam poplar trees. The largest sand dune is 8 kilometers long and is up to ten meters high. Old, sparse and windswept pine forests grow here with many dead trees.
Many rare insect species thrive in the varied natural environments along the coast. Here is one of few places in the country where all three species of antlion dragonfly occur.
Byrum's raukar is just south of the ecopark and is Öland's only real raukar area. It is protected as a nature reserve. In total, there are around 120 rauks along the coast and abundant fossils. Just north of the area is a nice swimming beach.
