Óbidos is a small medieval town in central Portugal, known for its charming historic center, which is surrounded by fortress walls. A walk through its narrow, cobblestone streets feels like a journey back in time.
Historical Background
Origins and Early History
The first settlement in the area of modern-day Óbidos dates back to Roman times. Later, in 713 AD, the town was captured by the Moors, who reinforced the walls and built a fortress. However, in 1148, during the Reconquista, the town was reclaimed by Portugal's first king, Afonso I Henriques.
"The Town of Brides"
In 1210, King Dinis I of Portugal gave Óbidos as a wedding gift to his wife, Queen Isabel of Aragon, and this tradition continued for several centuries. Óbidos became a retreat for royal families, earning it the romantic nickname "The Town of Brides." This also influenced its development, as royal wives invested in the town's improvement.
Medieval Character
The town has preserved its appearance almost untouched since the 13th century. Its main attraction is the fortress walls surrounding Óbidos and the castle perched on the hill. The castle, with its imposing towers and crenelated walls, is one of the best-preserved fortresses in Portugal. It was restored and converted into a luxury historic hotel, "Pousada de Óbidos", in the 1950s.
