So, for anyone wondering I did decide to remake this episode. Simply put I made a few errors in the first video, and also left a few things out that I think would be beneficial to you the viewer. Im dedicated to presenting accurate real history, and have no problem in correcting myself. If you're interested in knowing more about the Japanese Civil War, aka the Boshin War check out my series on it: kzitem.info/news/bejne/sXikxauMkZWql4I

It is interesting to compare the differences between Ming China and Toyotomi Japan during the late 16th century. On one side, you have a large empire that is internally corrupt and incapable of fully utilizing its resouces, both natural and material. On the other side, you have a newly united and highly militarized state that seeks to massively expand its relatively small territory. A recipe for conflict.

Like all China's rulers and emperor's throughout history. Nothing special there. However the Hongwu emperor of the Ming dynasty was nowhere near as tyrannical as Emperor Qin Shu Huang of the Qin dynasty or King Zhou of the Shang dynasty a thousand and two thousand years before.

The good thing was he was a workaholic and abhors corruption. But yes he was very distrustful and abusive towards his own officials. His rigid system concerning trade and career paths for the common people will also cause alot of problems down the line

Honestly, come to think of it, a detailed look on the weakening and fall of the Ming dynasty would be worthwhile material for a series on its own. I know you want to focus on Japanese topics, and currently are dealing with the Boshin War, but do you have any plans of covering it?

It’s been a thought. I honestly would love to redo this entire series, I definitely could do a better job now, and I would love to have art commissioned for the videos. Hopefully the channel makes enough money to do that. But yeah if I redo this series I’ll probably do that. Or I may start doing livestreams once a month and cover that as a segment

The Ming were actually conquered 2 decades after the Imjin war by the Manchu tribes. 100x smaller than Japan in population. So yeah, Japan had a real shot in the Imjin war
@Thecognoscenti_1

The Ming Dynasty was undergoing a political, economic, and military renaissance during the Imjin War, but by the time of the Manchu Conquest, things had changed significantly for the worst. The bureaucracy was divided, corrupt, and ineffectual, the administration had broken down, the military was undergoing severe supply shortages, defections, and desertions, agriculture had been wrecked by the mini ice age, and all of northern China, including the capital at Beijing had been lost to peasant rebels. In fact, by the time of the Manchu invasion, the last Ming Emperor that had full control over China, Chongzhen, had committed suicide and a peasant dynasty known as the Shun had taken over. Japan did not have a real shot during the Imjin War, because Ming China in 1640 was immeasurably weaker than it was in 1590 when the war occured.

@@Thecognoscenti_1 china during the warring states period was a fiercesome collection of armed tribes. Thats the time sun tzu came up with the art of war. But since unification into a single country, it had become a complacent, bloated, sedentary nation much like the european union is today. It was conquered by the mongols, then by the manchus. They were big but any little country could completely conquer them
@Thecognoscenti_1

@@jerolvilladolid That is blatantly false. Chinese history ever since its unification has been one of the bloodiest in the civilised world, consisting of massive civil wars whose death tolls were unsurpassed until WWII (like the Three Kingdoms Period, Anshi Rebellion, and Taiping Rebellion), invasions by China of other nations and barbarian tribes (Vietnam and the Turkic peoples have been our constant victims), and of course, invasions into China by other nations and barbarian tribes. It has been a crucible of warfare that has spawned numerous innovations regarding military strategy and weaponry, and the classic bureaucratic government that was birthed during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States Periods was primarily created for the purposes of conducting warfare. It is true that others may have been able to conquer China, or parts of it, but that has only been the case during periods of great domestic weakness or internal division, or when the odds stacked against it are enormous. In this context, there have only been two occasions when China was completely conquered by barbarians, those being the Mongol and Manchu Conquests, and even so, these conquests were exceptionally bloody and long (for instance, the Mongol conquest of just the south of China, the Southern Song, took 45 years, by far the longest and most strenuous of the Mongol campaigns), required Chinese troops on the side of the barbarians to complete, and after these conquests, the barbarians had to adopt Chinese culture and bureaucracy to rule the land at all.

No they didn't. They didn't have the logistical ability to do so. You cannot compare the two. It took the Manchu over 40 years plus 10 other rebellions happening at the same time to gain victory

Sounded very weird and doesn't really make sense about China decline started with Zhu Yuan Zhang, the founder. Just an example of why your narrative about Ming's decline doesn't make any sense at all. How do explain the Treasure Fleet which come later long after Zhu Yuan Zhang's passing? It is fun to watch youtubers like yourself until you start sounding weird.

You didn’t pay attention to what I said very well if that was your take away. I said origins not started with. The Hongwu Emperor’s policies worked so long as the emperors after him stuck to them, and had his mindset. Which they didn’t. As far as the treasure ships I don’t understand how you say “long after” the Hongwu Emperor died in 1398 if I remember correctly and the treasure ships started in the very early part of the 14th century. 1405 is when they were officially in service. 7 years isn’t very long.
