Have you ever thought about what you’d do if you saw a big tsunami wave coming your way?
@SailingZatara
2 жыл бұрын
It’s funny you mention that, because especially on long passages like this we’ll sometimes sit out on deck and talk about “what we would do if” we saw a tsunami, or if we saw an alien ship, or got approached by a pirate ship, or saw some supernatural thing in the sky, etc… It’s fun and helps pass the time and we sort of connect as a family sharing what we’d think about wild crazy things happening! We actually did that on this passage but I’m afraid to spoil it by pulling the cameras out; times like that are very special and intimate for us as a family. ~Renee💕

As always, love watching your videos. Keith, I'm never going to be able to join you guys 'out there on the water', unless I hit a super lottery jackpot or something, and even then, probably won't. However, I still enjoy watching your videos and learning about sailing. So, since you guys are already in Tanzania and I don't expect any 'new' sailing videos for a while, would it be possible the next time you're doing passage to do a run down on all the sails you are using, how they're a controlled, what kind of wind angles you need for each and how they all work. As a pilot, (not current in 40 years) I realize that these sails are actually more like wingfoils, but others won't understand that, so a primer on how a sail actually works would be cool, too. I still want to know what instrument Kate is going to start playing. The family that plays music together stays together. :D

I don't understand your "sailing together" comment about Aquarius. Sidebar: I am a sailor, although on a much smaller monohull and in Florida coastal waters. But when I go on a trip with another boat, we stay within visual range. My boat is almost always lighter and faster, so in order to sail "together" I reduce sail. That way, if either of us has a problem, the other boat is within rescue, or at least assistance, distance. Granted, we are likely closer to other boats and the Coast Guard, but still, it's a safety issue. Since Zatari is faster, why did you leave first? Why are you knowingly sailing faster than Aquarius, thus increasing the distance between you? So if one of you hits a just below the surface steel cargo container and rips a four foot gash in one (or both) of your hulls, how long before the other boat can either catch up or go back and search for survivors? Or, what happens if one boat is hit by lightning and all radios, batteries and starter motors are fried? How would you find out that boat is in distress, and if you do, how do you find it? Perhaps these are not really issues because you both have plans and know how to overcome such potential emergencies. If so that's great. However, you said you were sailing together, for, I infer, mutual safety/support, but you're not sailing together. And, you did not say how you could mutually support each other over ever increasing distances. I would really like to know you handle this because I would want to incorporate your plans into my safety plan.
