We spent a week on Ocracoke Island and still didn't want to leave. With 16 miles of beautiful beaches, it was voted the number one beach in America. And we agree!
Beaches shouldn't be full of shops and restaurants, and this one isn't. Ocracoke Island has 16 miles of pure beach with not a building in sight.
And 16 miles of beaches gives everyone in the small town plenty of room to spread out and still have their own slice of heaven.
The sand is so fine, that it felt like baby powder. The water was the perfect temperature to cool off without being too cold. And the view is spectacular!
What really makes Ocracoke Island special is the people we met. After hopping on the free golf cart shuttle, and asking the driver where we could buy stick-on velcro (to finish our bug screen project), he told us his wife probably had some. He then slowed down as he saw her car approaching us, and, yes, she had plenty that we were welcome to.
We also had great conversations with the owner, staff, and other patrons at Zillies, which became our favorite place to relax with a glass of wine, cheese, and crackers after a beach day. I even found the perfect summer hat there.
Howard Street is the oldest street on the Island and some of the houses are still owned by descendants of the first settlers. There are 5 or 6 small graveyards where those decedents are honored with coins on their gravestones. There is also a nice pottery store full of locally made pottery and artwork on the street- the only store on the short residential street.
We also explored the lighthouse, restaurants, and of course, the smoothy and ice cream stand, on our bikes.
Make sure you protect yourself from the sun if you are out on the beach all day, or for a week. The link below is an Amazon Affiliate link. If you make a purchase after clicking the link, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Thank you.
