To add to your comments about the placebo effect... my husband and I have been talking about this a lot (we are very recently branching out into Paganism, Druidry, witchcraft, but we both have strong feelings about science, the laws of physics, thermodynamics, etc.) . We talked about how one the one hand, we sometimes feel a sense of conflict about witchcraft and magic, rooted in our tendencies towards scientific skepticism, and how every observable effect in witchcraft might just be in the head of the practitioner... but on the other hand, there's the old saying, "It's not dumb if it works!" The placebo effect DOES have a real effect - it has statistical significance, that's why it was given its own name to begin with. It just goes to show that the human mind is a powerful thing, and it has great potential to shape its own reality. So yes, it might just be placebo effect. But that doesn't make it any less cool. It's not dumb if it works. Great video, Hearth - I'm really enjoying your content (love the intellectual/educational bent to everything).

I truly appreciate when people branch the subject of science with magic. After all, a lot of modern 'medicine' was once upon a time labeled 'witchcraft' simply because the 'science' hadn't been 'defined/discovered' yet. (I do not use the ''-marks to discredit or scepticize these terms only emphasize my understandings of their evolved roles in the history of scientific understanding). Theory(for lack of better word here) Step 1) It is scientifically recognized that the planets and large-organic-space-objects (ie: moons) have a gravitational pull. Theory Step 2) It is scientifically accepted that our moon's gravitational pull effects the Earth's water such to create currents and tide. Theory Step 3) Connect some dots using scientifically approved math(s) Theory Step 4 (or walk-Through Conclusion to the point I started this on): The many varying strengths of the sun/star, our moon, planets in our Galaxy & their moons all have individual gravitational pulls not only sending these magnets our way but also interfering in eachother and eachother's magnetic pulls. The human body is (approximating off the top of my head) 96% (?) water.. And already staying on earth due to Earth's gravity. Is it so far out of the realm of possibility that 'true' horoscopes (yes, there's asthetic bs thrown around from time to time) aka the mathematic calculations of the planetary alignments effects on a physical or mental electricity-brain/water-body organism (ie: human) at a specific time may be able to have an educational interpretation pattern? This, alongside the widely acknowledged link that shadow-work is psychology by another name (as emphasized with the placebo effect) are only two example of how well one can reinforce sciences while respecting individuals and their paths. 🙂

I saw a great post once that went along these same lines like. Maybe it is all in my head...But it still works! Personally I do believe there is more to it than just placebo but if there weren't, it wouldn't stop me. This is an awesome comment

Even if it IS just placebo, the placebo effect is actually insanely powerful. One time someone was part of a double-blind trial for a drug (i forget what it was for now). They’d just had a bad breakup so they took the drug they’d been given and massively overdosed on it. They were admitted to the hospital unconscious and with severe signs of poisoning. When the doctors investigated, they found that he’d actually been in the “placebo” side of the trial. The person woke up within 5mins of hearing this and all signs of overdose and poisoning vanished. There’s evidence to suggest that giving people a lower dose of medication but with an added placebo actually promotes better recovery as there’s less side effects to deal with. It’s actually a really interesting subject but the main take away from it is that the placebo effect is more powerful than a lot of people think. So, even if it just simply is placebo and placebo only, it’s still pretty damn powerful.

I would be curious to see if their magic would blossom if they incorporated a good foundation ( my bias would be to do ancestral work too)

I find that when it comes to women taking up witchcraft as a feminist practice, it's important to distinguish between actual traditional practices and self care with a 'witchy' flavor. Both are valid on their own but you need to call a duck a duck.
@officert5147

I love this comment! I hadn't thought about this but it's true. Drinking herbal tea, embracing femininity, and owning a rose quartz, does not a witch make. I'm not saying that to be gatekeepy, it's just a fact. You can do aesthetic witch-adjacent things and even use products made by witches, without being one. You can be a feminist who loves nature and not be a witch. The practice of magic makes the title of Witch. Something being "witchy" doesn't make it a ritual.
@ninaroux8791

Officer Riya so very true, I think another problem that contributes to this is an over attachment to labels. A desire to label ourselves before we've done the work. An attraction to an aesthetic alone is a fashion lifestyle choice. What is fundamentally needed to start is a deep understanding of ones own place and sovereignty over ones life within a spiritual framework.

@@ninaroux8791 Yep. If one was initially attracted to witchcraft first and then started their own witch-path, that's a perfectly valid beginning for a witch. YES! I feel like many of these insta witches are just "doing a witchcraft" and not being a witch if anyone understands that. I find that many of them say stuff like these women did along the lines of: "I don't have to believe in the inherent magical power of say crystals, just to have them as a reminder to do stuff and to stay grounded". but like then you could just write it down on your calendar, right? Stay positive! There magic done apparently. I also find it important to outright say that hey this is just my way of doing things and that witchcraft itself is not inherently tied to any political ideology. If we don't draw that distinction people on the outside get confused. I get asked if I am a neo-nazi because of my Odal rune tattoo - just because neo-nazis have tried to own that symbol - and recently a local newspaper wrote an article about feminist witches in my city and apparently "they don't actually believe that magic is real or that rituals and spells actually work - this is just a protest to them". And so my actual belief in magic gets lumped in as a protest. Not saying that it can't be that - just that obviously doesn't apply to everyone. Anyway, thanks for reading my TED talk, lol.

About sacrifice.... if blood is to be used in rituals ( like an offering, or to use vital force energy for specific uses ) , the best one i think, is to use yours. Sacrifice ur own blood. And if u use a knife instead of a dart to open ur flesh, it makes for a very good practice for inner will, and for mental control. Naturaly i do it, but im not encouraging anyone to do it. If u do, do it at ur own risk ( put care in using sterile blade .. etc. Use common senses )

Same: As someone who is male identifying (despite my outwardly feminine appearance), it's pretty invalidating and demoralizing when I hear people pushing the idea of witchcraft being a feminine practice: I almost didn't get into witchcraft because of that. I kept hearing people talk about their Goddess and about working with their Goddess in their practice all the time, and a big emphasis on feminine energy, which... just didn't fit me. I so strongly relate to being a non-conforming man, and really rebelling against the idea of gender roles.... So to hear witchcraft to be a Feminine thing is just.... it gets under my skin.

It does not speak to only women. It’s for everyone to use the energy all around us to empower and direct intentions. I am not part of a coven. I can not separate it from my daily life. Meaning, it’s not just something I do once a day and leave it for the next day. It is engrained in everything I do. I believe it’s all about energy& placebo effect IS energy. I was pleasantly surprised that they addressed so many of the stereotypes that are continuously regurgitated in media and the movies, further solidifying the inaccurate assumptions that have been going on for centuries. I was also very pleased with your comment about the feminine vs. masculine focus on the practice. There is a balance to all things. If we exclude our brothers from the participation of the healing of the feminine, we are continuing the divide. Instead, if we work together we can heal both the feminine and the masculine so we can stop the damaging cycle.

That it's about balance - that their practice is lopsided if they only include femininity. That's as if someone was to only include one element. Or if one was to only acknowledge bad in everything and ignore the good in everything. I look at it as everything has a percentage of each side within. Everything is part feminine and part masculine. Part water, air, fire, earth, and spirit. Part "good" and part "evil" I thank the gods that you're so popular and still stay grounded in reality

That was something that was a very big problem for me in the beginning, because when I was really trying to find information and navigate this new path. All I saw were younger girls, that made me question a lot of things. Like am I being childish for thinking this is for me, if the only people I see doing this are practically children?? And are the only adults that do this the "weird" ones that get shown through media, so since I'm an adult does that make me weird? It wasn't until I found channels like yours and shadow harvest, that I felt like I had found people like me that I could relate to that didnt make me feel crazy for what I was doing.

Witch craft does work. the placebo effect is still showing the witch that what they did worked. it doesn't matter. if something happens and it helps people then it works. placebo is another way to say it's an after effect and it's all in your head. it is in your head and now it's in your reality :) so it works. Witch craft manifests in so many different ways. and sometimes when you think your spell didn't work, it actually did work. you just didn't understand how it worked for you and what the real result was. but there has been change in the air that took effect. the only thing in this world that is constant is change. a Witch can create that change. we can shift reality to go the way we'd like it to. it really is energy pushed out made by intentions. THAT. is magic. Witch craft can be as simplistic as you desire but still pack a powerful punch in the results you get or you can do a more powerful intention setting and pushing out that energy into the universe in a bigger way and you may get even bigger more powerful results. it's all about how you want to execute the spell. you could even use someone else's spell and modify it to your liking. Witch craft is a personal practice. you can do whatever you want. it has to make sense to you, as the Witch yourself, to create that shift in your own reality and make a change. you can even manifest for other people. some people say the person you are manifesting for has to also want what you are manifesting for them. that's not always true. it depends. if the person you are manifesting for wants love for themselves and to have a new partner, you as a Witch can cast the spell but the person needs to be able to see the opportunities and signs presented to them by the Universe and jump on those opportunitites and take it from there. that's why some people's spells "don't work" according to them, because they didn't know what to do after the spell was cast. be out and about in the world and the magic will reveal itself to you. your reality WILL change. it's all about the matter of fact if you truly and honestly desire that reality or if it was just something you temporarily day dreamed about but it's not something you'd like to have in your life or stick with for the long term. The Universe is all knowing. The Universe can pick up if your just wasting your money on a spell caster when you can shift that reality for yourself. maybe not even through a spell. just simply knowing that which you desire and making it your reality. Witch craft is manifesting. it is not satanism. although there are Witches who practice that. but it's not all Witches. The Law of Attraction is the basic concept of Witch Craft. it's what it all boils down to. Witch Craft is super simple. creating your reality is easier than people make it out to be. people tend to make things difficult for themselves. more than it has to be. you want a hot body? work for it! you want that car? work for it! you want a family dinner to go in a positive direction. take the necessary actions and be in that vibrational space to have a positive experience. work for it. it's all about being on that vibrational level to shift your current reality into that which you desire and wish to obtain and live in. Dimentional Jumping is what it truly is called. and it's happening every day to each and every one of us. you choose a different person over another in love or in friendship? you change your reality. you are in a new world now things are different. you change something in your life....your life changes. you are the change you wish to see in the world. you want a new life? a different reality? change yourself first. and i don't mean get that which you feel will make others happy. no. do what makes you happy so you end up where YOU wish to be in your life? a nice little house on a hill, drinking tea, petting your doggies or kittens? riding your bike to the farmers market. etc ... idk . meditating in the morning. doing your morning yoga on the patio in a nice environment. working a job you love to do? maybe your a fitness instructor or a professional Witch? or even a regular job that you would love to do. makeup artist? your practice is personal to you as a Witch as a person. you do not share it with anyone else. it is your secret how you make things available to you in your life. that's the fun and magic of it all. you make things known you take away the magic. Many Blessings!

I can give you the nutshell version of it? Nowhere as many actual witches actually got killed during that time as it is made out, and is mostly made up hype to sell trinkets for tourists. The reality is, a lot of women of all ages were killed (under the excuse of "being a witch") simply because they were in actual fact, in possession of land or wealth of some kind and if they were "gotten rid of", then have a guess who would get the abovementioned property and/or wealth? So yeah, sadly, it was a lot less about a hunt for "witches" and a lot more about reclaiming lands and livestock and the like. "Destroying evil witches" was just a convenient excuse as always. ACTUAL witches at the time were too damn smart to get caught up in such theatrics. Knowing how to actually research is a wonderful thing. I do suggest you learn it. :) Some shitty show that mentioned it once is not research. Other people's random opinions is not research. Get multiple sources that more or less say the same thing, and you will be close. Sorry, not sorry. :P

There's a podcast by Aaron Mahnky called Unobscured. The first season is all about the Salem witch trials. It's really well researched and there are interviews given by historians who specialize in the trials. The reality, as stated, is that witchcraft itself didn't play a roll at all. There were a handful of social, economic, and other contextual factors at play, but not witchcraft. There are some books on the topic as well, but if you're really just curious about the type of magic that was practiced by Christians at the time, I recommend doing research into folk magic.

Hey HearthWitch! Do you think you could react to one of Elijah Daniel's witchcraft videos? I think he's very respectful towards the practice but also has a lot of fun with it, and I think it's a good representation to the outside work. The friend he's learning from seems very knowledgeable in spirit work.

I lean more towards the path of the solitary Hedge Witch. I'm at my best when I'm outdoors tending my garden or in the woods foraging. My aesthetics are closer to a poor white farmer. I make do with what I have on hand. Improvisation is key to me. I believe in the balance of male and female energies. My book shelf has an equal male and female representation in authors who have participated in and shaped modern witchcraft. I'm an Intersectional Bell Hooks feminist in that I believe both men and women are negatively impacted by the patriarchal capitalistic society we live in. Observing seasonal change is really important to me because of my roots in botany. I am currently preparing my house and garden to observe Mabon and Samhain. I respect everyone's right to their unique experiences on the path of Witchcraft, I just acknowledge that my path is very different than the young female Instagram Witches of today.

I'm just getting into witchcraft, and I'm also nonbinary, so it was very confusing when majority was female and books meant for females, I don't and will never dislike the feminist movement, I just think (my opinion, you don't need to agree) other genders and people who identify as other then female should be recognised more. I'm not saying female shouldn't be recognised as well, I'm saying everyone should be recognised equally. But that's only my opinion, and I could be wrong.

Very late to this video here, but! (Fellow British!) transmasculine witch here, and I really really appreciate what you say about not liking portraying witchcraft as a women’s-only club. There’s a pretty large amount of TERF witches and such who strongly, strongly gatekeep witchcraft from anyone except cis women, unfortunately- so hearing those two in the video set off some alarm bells in my head, even if unintentional. Also! It drives me mad how heavily gendered some resources are! I love working with love and emotional magic but I really struggle with how every bit of info is HEAVILY “FEMININE energy” and such… or spells like “this to attract MEN”… like, what if I want to attract any gender?! And I’m not a woman, and not quite a man, so the gendered energies feel out of place… is my rose quartz really that picky?!! Lol If anyone knows any resources or books which are more neutral I would greatly appreciate the advice actually 💖

I started off as a Druid but got fed up of the ritual by numbers,white robe stuff,so I went down a slightly darker way that incorporates Asatru and other aspects of my Northern European,Anglo Saxon culture into my path. I enjoyed your video and have subscribed,but here's the thing, I have no problem with the way you do things or Dylan does things,as for the "Basic Witches" that's just the sort of fluffy,hippy dippy,love and light shite that I cannot stand,they are the sort of people that I will instantly avoid. I go for a very basic Pagan style of ritual,I am a founder member of a Hearth in West Yorkshire and we set it up to get away from all that sort of shite,we are going for a more basic,simple practice and ritual that cuts a lot of the "bling"out. I know my comment will not go down well,but I answer truthfully,which is one of the reasons I don't get invited do as many talks lol.

I didn’t really like the last section but but Mystic Dylan is great! I’m actually 13 and have always been spiritual being clairsentient and an empath. I really liked how Dylan talks about traditional practices and history of witchcraft.. most people my age who start going into spirituality and witchcraft don’t research and do things thinking they know everything.. no hate to any other witches my age but I personally like to watch many many KZitem videos and read and find credible tiktok witches to learn more.. I’ve been starting with tarot and getting better at that along with using pendalums and learning the meanings of crystals and herbs.. I make spell jars and my own sigils with proper research but I have never done a spell or candle magic yet due to wanting to be ready and feel comfortable first..

I think you're totally right I think people have this idea in their head based on TV shows and movies what witchcraft is supposed to beand they hang on to that idea not realizing that just because it's not instant right there in your face does not mean it is not real. Movies are there for entertainment for a reason

Personally I don't care for what some people who label as "feminism." Though I did check out their Instagram and I really didn't like it. It really comes off as just an aesthetic and I don't even like their aesthetic. Of course, it is just an opinion but I don't feel they represent witchcraft well for one main reason. Their Instagram is very political, which I don't like that they mix it with witchcraft. I just find them really off putting, but obviously if anyone likes them that is completely fine !!

I also resonate so much more with Dylan and I do feel like it's wrong that the Basic Witches says witchcraft is feminism(or what ever they said). It might be for them, but not in general. It is for everyone, although I think it's beautiful that they use it for feminism too cause it's needed in my opinion! Everyone's practice is different and their own.

The presence of a male witch is refreshing to have. The lingering effects of misogyny have caused people to overly identify the witch with femininity which is precisely what led to the gender imbalances in witch hunts. While the approach of Dylan is something that does not resonate with me (I am much more rooted in chaos magic melded with traditional craft) he is an excellent male ambassador for the craft.

I have a problem with the Instagram witch thing simply because almost paints it as some sort of a trend rather than a practice with deep meaning. It brings the seriousness of it down so far that some younger people may start dabbling in things they don’t understand or even research to be ‘’on trend” I know that this can lead to someone finding their calling but there is a greater chance of someone doing something either hurtful to themselves or others or even being disrespectful even if not intentional. There needs to be more diversity in media and social media etc so that it truly shows the inclusiveness of the craft.

To me witchcraft is inclusive, not exclusive, so seeing it as a feminist movement gives me a mixed reaction. Feminism can often exclude males or people who do not identify as feminist. Witchcraft is not really about gender, it's about recognizing and connecting with patterns and harmonies of energy.

May I ask you something? What about the magical circle? In some older books I always read: Draw the magical circle for protection of bad energies before practicing witchcraft. In the newer books I bought, there's not a single word lost to this. What is the right way? I have lot's of respect to use witchcraft because I'm unsure if I need to "protect myself" or if I don't do. It really slows me down 😅

I really really really appreciate your side quest into it not being 💯feminist movement, that there is a balance. (At risk of going into my own side quest here:) As a pansexual in what I'd call a yin & yang style marriage we've individually and together had to wade our way through those muddy waters of our path(s). I don't see gender the way I'm to understand everyone else does. I see and respect the physical aspects as they partain to someone in need of medical attention or someone's psycholical needs of identity but on the spiritual level of magic itself (much like the majoring agency that angels and some gods/goddesses themselves) are/is genderless. There are alignments stronger suited to masculine verses feminine, yes, but the "boy" and "girl" gendering of these alignments have mearly been combined and interchanged over such a large timespan. How we communicate and transcribe evolved, much as something from one language being translated into English may lose some of its inherent or encompassing meaning simply because the translator in that moment doesn't have the appropriate combination of words to get it 'exactly'. This is not a bad thing! I only mention it as a acknowledgement that information gets passed around in a global game of children's "telephone". Gods aligned such with the sun are interpreted with a masculine energy, not "male". Goddesses aligned such with the moon design a more feminine energy, not strictly "woman". (Another Sidenote: this to me includes the 'maiden mother & crone' for although they are female in the taught 'written history' they are 'roles'. You can have a diddly and still be: a virgin/maden, a patient caregiver/parent, & a wise leader or advisor to your family/coven or community.) "Feminine" in no ways means "weak" as "masculine" in no time at means "rock". I hope I communicated this right and that it aids someone on their own path. Thank you for sticking through my rant until the end & thank you Hearth for being one of the content creators on here that I genuinely admire and continue to learn from.

The self-help people have co-oped part of the spiritual aspects of the craft. For better or worse. The feminist only practice of the craft ignores an important aspect of the duality in all things. Up, down, love, hate, light, dark, black, white, female, male. Goddess, God! Hey you want to Crack the moon just, FAFO? Or just skip part of the larger picture based off modern dogma? Ok, you do you!

I don’t personally mind the idea of people practicing witchcraft as part of their feminism, as there are paths which are purely for women (like the Dianic path in Wicca) and there are forms of neopaganism which incorporate feminism directly. However, I do think it was rather irresponsible of those girls to not acknowledge that witchcraft is not only for women, as it definitely could be alienating for people who are not women or do not present femininely.

Finally, someone that feels the way I do about balance and doesnt feed into toxic femininity. I always strive for any Goddess work with God representation to balance out my intention and energy. And honestly, "Instagram Witches" leaves a bad taste in my mouth when someone says it. There's a line of tradition you just don't cross, and witchcraft on the internet could easily warp energies and intention through the filter of that particular lens.
