I don't know the Witcher 3 felt SO much more personal, probably because Geralt is an established character so he feels like a real person with his decisions almost never being something Geralt wouldn't do so you don't feel like you ARE him but that you are WITH him on his adventure, compared to the more "open ended" style of RPG protagonists which feel more like clay that you can mould to your liking which might be more fun as an RPG but that means the MC doesn't feel like a real person like a real character and there is no emotional connection to them by the end. Also the side characters were much better in my opinion in the Witcher. Maybe it's because they have such little screen time, the only relationship that I cared about was V and Johnny's, and even then V is not even close to Geralt and it's not because of the two other games or the books I played Witcher 3 first without any background and still fell in love with the characters immensely to the point where I point people to this game to prove to them that a video game can have as good a story and characters as any TV show or book. Not to say this game was bad this game has some amazing side quests like the one with Joshua and the crucifixion and the main story has some great moments but it felt like a lot of things were missing.

In a flash, it went from everything being fine to him being sulky and disappointed, no matter how quick or often you showed up at the house or called him. And the fact that with Judy there's a repeated option to tell her that you'd like to spend more time with her, but River, you can only repeatedly ask about the gangs or tell him once that you have doubts about a happy ending for the romance. But V apparently only says something along the lines of "not really, its up and down". I feel like that's even worse than saying nothing at all if you've done Pyramid song at that point. Plus its a shame you cant have your romance option hang out at your apartment sometimes. Or maybe even give us the option to talk about memorable side quests. Judy comments on the parade but thats literally it. So suggests its yet another thing that may have been cut. I would have loved to have shown Skippy to Judy. Could have been a small but welcome moment of comic relief. I think my biggest problem with this game is that I fell in love with so many parts of it, but I needed so much more from them. Well, Cyberpunk is a good game. Not just as legendary as the Witcher 3. Its kinda...hilarious and also strange how Witcher 3 did everything that Cyberpunk couldn't. Again, strangely, I feel that its not the same company with Cyberpunk somehow. The team's not the same on the CP project, maybe that's why. All things said, I liked Cyberpunk quite a bit. Maybe they lack experience with the complex Cyberpunk setting, and maybe when sequels release they'll become better. I also loved that in Witcher 3 you could never tell where a quest is going, and no quest was under 10 minutes ever.. Best eg is Carnal Sins, where a small favour for a friend turns into a full serial killer hunt where the killer is not even frickin human. That kind of depth is just not there in Cyberpunk. I enjoyed Cyberpunk most for roaming around pointlessly. All other aspects, off to Witcher 3 I go. Btw, Letalis, about the engram thing, I'll have to disagree with you. This is a consequence of lore, like, Soulkiller isn't exactly used that much. In the lore, only Silverhand was the one on whom Soulkiller was used. V also wasn't captured by Arasaka unlike Silverhand, who was tortured and caught by Arasaka, and then put into Soulkiller *probably* to get some info off of him...but yeah that was definitely a lore-consequence. EDIT: I hope they can fix the game through DLCs and patches, maybe even an overhaul.

The problem with V as far as I see it is that he/she was supposed to be the extension of the player (as opposed to V being a set character like Gerald), which sometimes results in bland writing if done sloppily. What made it worse is that in the final result we don't even get the player choices. The game feels like the devs stopped working on everything at one moment and started finishing stuff up regardless of what was done or not. The game needed about 2 more years of development in my opinion.

Problem is the wrong word, tradeoff would be more to the point. It's a tradeoff either way, going with a wholly prefabbed character like Gerald makes it much easier to write a more consistant and involved story for this character, but it comes at the cost of player agency, and the stronger the character's personality is defined, the more limitations that charcter puts on what you can write before you break the character. It can horribly backfire too. What happens if the player doesen't like the character you made? Nothing good.. Alternatively, the more of a blank slate you make the player character the more agency and freedom you place in the players hands, but at a cost. How do you write for a character that you don't know? So it's neigh inevitable that you will end up writing a story where the players involvement is going to be more periphial, more bland. The player character often ends up being more an influencer of events, and less the center of attention of these events. It also carries it's own risk, you can only write so many dialogue options, and predict so many possible choices a player might want to make, so you always run the risk of the player feeling unsatiesfied with the avalible options, taking them out of the game. You can also try to mix and match these things, as Cyberpunk does. V is neither a wholly blank slate nor a fully established character, so you get some benifits of both, but also some of the downsides of both. There's really not a right or wrong answer here, you trade something nomatter what you do, and some people will love or hate it nomatter what you do. As an example, i find myself in the wholly opposite position of xLetails. I really liked V, the character clicked with me and i probably ended up enjoying this game more than xLetails did as a result of that. Conversly though, i never played the Witcher games. I bought the first one, played it for a few houers, and in those few houers i grew to hate the character of Gerald, he completely rubbed me the wrong way, i coulden't connect with him at all, i found him desturbing, and it ruined the game for me. Didn't even bother looking at it's two sequels, because you still play those as Gerald.

@@Grobut81 Geralt grows during those games. You may end up liking the character. Try the third game. You don't need to play the previous two to enjoy the third. What do you mean by choices? I'm asking sirously since this is one thing I can't understand in terms of critque for the game. I think the endings are made as intended. The cyberpunk setting in general is a distopian universe, most of the time showing that no matter choice you made, the big brother is step ahead. And bitter sweat endings suits the game more than positive one. But well, the SUN endings is possibly leads to that Mr. Blue Eyes can heal you, so... DLC maybe wil elaborate on that.

31:30 I think the lack of attachment to V is VERY likely due to the entire game being 1st person with no 3rd person cut-scenes. 3rd person cut-scenes would not only let you see more of your customized character design/ outfit, but it would give better chances to see V react to things properly.

Your comparison between Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3 has already speak enough volume on the bar of expectation that some of us had for Cyberpunk. CDPR was so good at marketing the game and made all of us believe in them. I've played the game for like 241 hours and platinum the game on PS4 in one playthrough as Nomad male V. Screwed up my skill tree when I decide to go all Jack of All Trade build, but I had some rich experience in story wise. My 2nd play was pure netrunner build and I can tell you its all OP. You can wipe out the entire enemies in the area without even being detected. Since 10th Dec, it took me 10 days to accept the fact that I'm playing a completely downgraded game. Bugs and glitches are common factor, but the fact that Cyberpunk was being in development around the last gen console life cycle and unable to run beautifully on last gen console is just a spit in the face for console gamers. Hell, I even played back TW3 strolling around in Toussaint and wondered what the hell went wrong lol. I had thought of refund but I choose to keep playing and see what they have to offer. Whether CDPR would patch the game to the point of it being playable on last gen console is an understatement. They may fix its performance stability, but it will never be as good as next gen or PC, that is for certain. That being said, I'm also afraid of what The Witcher 4 is gonna be like too. Would it operate in the way it was marketed, or is it just gonna have the same treatment as their previous games? All and all, my faith for CDPR is diminished after all the vouching and expectation I had for them. Yes, I finished the game regardless and my last gen experience is a bitter pill to swallow. I hope next time they stop being a marketing PR company.

You sum that up where you said at 33:15 “I didn’t really dislike the game, I just had very high expectations.” I’m sure they’re passionate and committed enough to correct and improve upon this, potentially making it a game worth revisiting in a year or two, but for now you’ve encouraged me to go back to The Witcher 3 and explore more of the DLC and branching story lines I didn’t pursue last time. I came to CP77 from the opposite end that most people did. When it was announced I was instantly turned off by the 1st person shooter aspect. I kind of kept track of it but never watched anything but the first teaser trailer, never got into the hype and really had pretty much decided I was going to skip it. Then a strange confluence happened, I had finished RDR2 for the second time, nothing new that I wanted to play was out and CP77 dropped and I was like, well I had gotten Witcher 3 at a great price, might as well reward CDPR and buy the game but would probably stop playing as soon as the first 1st person induced headache hit. 400 hours later, still playing it. You are right, it is a disappointment in that it is not a step above Witcher 3 but overall it is a really good (PC) game. I have played as a sniper, a stealthy ninja, a netrunner, and even though I suck at it, a run and gunner. The story is decent, Johnny is fun, the world is interesting, the side quests (Judy, River, Panam, and Kerry) are fun, the leveling missions (fixer gigs, police missions, etc.) were a bit boring but never felt like a huge grind. Compared to the best games ever made (Witcher 3, RDR2 as examples) it does fall short but compared to say Assassins' Creed Valhalla, it is a masterpiece.

In the end I started hating V himself when I realized he's not my character or A character, but just someone that gets ordered around by others and discarded as soon as he stops being useful, with no recourse. Most dialogues don't give you any option at all, to the point where most in-dialogue choices are just one phrased in multiple ways, you always have to go along with their stuff how they want you to do that and if you don't it's either a failstate or everything ends abruptly (which is basically the same). Most times they don't even explain why they want you to do something until you're already doing it but still you can't even ask. The result is practically the same as side gigs where you get a message or a spiel saying "there's this and that now go and do the thing". V's just a tool and once Johnny pops up he's basically playing your character, even when it makes zero sense like taking the pills shortening your life to get him laid. It's basically impossible to "get in character" because there's no character really. [edit] You know what, I'll just paste this as a new comment as I think it answers Letalis' question too.

@@meppho Strange thing man, but 70% if mission you can skip and do not take them and not be ordred by someone. The missions where they ask you to go unseen you can complete by killing everyone and not be ordered around. You can fight Jonhny by taking blocking pills, do not listen to him and do not care about him at all and finsih game with ALDECALDOS - by most people considered good ending. You can skip story lines of Judy and Panam and do not do things more than it's need to progress to end of the game. And do not care for them. In main quest line you can fight back too: You can backstab Meredith at the start of the game and befriend Malestorm which will result in her death and you as a winner or you can backstab Malestorm and kill them all. You can backstab VooDoo boyzz which will result in their death and not yours OR you can backstab both NetWatch agent and VooDoo boyz, die twice, but kill them all and not be ordered around. They also ask you to go unseen but you can aproach this mission gun blazing. You obviously can backstab Hanako and attack Arasaka. V is the charater of the player. If you played him as person without any charater he will be just that.
@meppho
3 жыл бұрын
@@PandaBearWithMic Lulz, it baffles me how you just confirmed my point thinking you contradicted it. You can either do how you're mandated to or "skip". There's no middle ground. That was exactly my point. For instance you can backstab the voodoo boyz or not, but they are out of the story regardless, just as the netwatch agent. It's fake choices exactly like dialogues where you can say yes in 3 different ways. The maelstrom part in the very beginning is the only one with different outcomes and still those outcomes are insignificant, just a tacked on scene with Meredith and 2 iconic weapons. Even Dum Dum later on is basically just another NPC, it leads to nothing. It's not like I could play V any way at all, it's either do this or don't and miss out on buttons for the ending. Which is exactly the same as Mass Effect 3 ending which was blasted at the time, but now it seems not only acceptable but even good. That alone speaks volumes of what the situation is today tbh. You can't play V in a way or another. It's either do in a very specific way or skip. [edit] Thinking of it, it's exactly like the backstories. You choose what you want but you're a street kid in all 3 regardless. That carries for every single aspect of the rest of the game. [edit2] Let me give you a very strong example to make this clearer: Claire's quest. You can tell her you're not interested in her revenge plot (despite not being able to confront her on the evident bullshit she's throwing your way, but let's disregard that) and you can effectively ignore her whine during the last race. But what's the outcome of that?
@PandaBearWithMic
3 жыл бұрын
@@meppho Okay I think I'm getting close to understand what people mean by significant choices, but still... So as I understand if in the ending of the game the would showed you news from Pacifica and said something like: all VooDoo boys are gone and Pacifica slowly turning into peaceful area and etc for every major quest. Would you considered as your choice matter in the end? [backstories] they matter, mostly flavor though. But your character will connect with some characters better than with others. for example male nomad techie V have most interesting dialogues and biggest connection with Panam. Yes, you can romance her either way, but the best connection you'll get wit this build. And once again if you play CORPO background character as street kid, he will be that, but if play him as CORPO you will be corpo. Just as an example how I've used the backstory for my Nomad character and played as nomad: I played sniper build since, NOMADS are more likely to use long distance weapons, also Tech since your home is your car and salvaging things and construct them is matter of survival. I mostly was doing badlands explorations and missions avoiding the city as much as I could. And focused on Panam storyline since I got the most connection with her, through Nomad background and Tech skill. After badlands were done and Panam quest I rolled with storyline and got ending with joining Aldecaldos the new family for the V. You have the power to play your charater as you want man. [edit 2] she will not serve you drinks at the bar. She just a barmen choom. What she can do to a merc who killing all gangs and corps left and right :)

As for the problem with the fact that V's body rejects his engram. I think the chip with Johnny not only rewrites V's mind, but also gradually changes the DNA of the whole body. The brain is probably the last part of the body that the chip hasn't completely changed. Thus, if V moves back into his body, the body begins to attack parts of the brain that have not yet been changed. If Johnny stays in the body, all you have to do is let the chip finish its work and completely change V's body. I don't know why it's impossible to use a chip similar to the one with Johnny, but with V to change the body's DNA back. Maybe V's body is too damaged to be able to handle another change.

This is probably the Cyberpunk video which agrees the most with my views on the game. For all the good moments of Cyberpunk, they were exactly that, moments. The overall experience just fell short in many areas for me (mostly the one's described here) and that is without taking bugs into mind.The world too just didn't feel "lived in", driving around Night City (even without commenting on the actual feel of the driving) didn't have half of the ambience of riding around on Roach. Another thing I'll mention is that usually I love to be the bad guy in games, choosing "evil" dialogue options and paths when avalible, the Witcher 3 was one of the only games I was unable to do that in because the writing was good and the situations (despite thier fantasy setting felt so human, that's one of the reasons I hold W3 over games like Mass Effect or Elder Scrolls). There were moments like this in 2077 but they were exceptions to the rule, not the rule itself.

I like that this review focused on the story elements over the obvious gameplay issues. I actually really liked the endings, as it left me with a sense of... emptiness, loss of dreams, sadness you could say - that I thought was really powerful, which not many games achieve. The game was trying to push boundaries in too many areas, fell a bit short but I am glad they tried it. We shouldn't be too critical of game devs failing from being too ambitious. Sometime you just need to take the gamble, release something and move on. CDPR will learn from this and be better. We need more of this in the industry. The open world in Cyberpunk felt really dense and multi-layered. I cannot think of another game which quite achieves this; no GTA5 does not come close if you really stop to compare

IMHO the op nature of combat is : the best is a netrunner build (quickhacking) as in any confrontation with many enemies in closer proximity it without a doubt is the fastest way of downing everyone (not dead but shooting them after fixes that if it is wished) like getting a bunch of well placed grenades, everyone goes down, 2) blades (but only because they keep you from being seen easily (its cheaty) as you go from enemy to enemy and 1 shot them, then 3) levelling up pistols to one shot enemies (first in sneaky mode with head shots, and later with one shot anywhere, 3) Sniper rifles from afar (leveled up a good Breakthru can one shot without being charged up easily AND...when everyone is pinged it takes moments to shoot everyone through walls, ceilings, floors, etc., with a charged shot and this is faster than running in and pistol shooting them. So every method is OP but I find its good to do a netrunner build AND use guns/blades at my discretion if I want to have a different kind of challenge.

Basically agree with everything you said in the review. I will say though, I do enjoy Cyberpunks combat more than The Witcher 3, it has its own issues with AI, etc like you said but overall I think they did fine there.

I don't know if you said this but I just realized in the witcher when you wear certain gear people talk about it (not wolf armor). I think that is a big reason why i like the witcher it feels like the people in the world respond to your gear.

19:05: Waiting for a specific amount of "in-game" time for missions to progress is terrible. New Vegas did this better a decade ago -- there are quest stages tied to being in a specific place in a specific time, but you can always skip time by waiting, and missions will auto-update if there is a plot flag that requires you to wait for someone like a messenger or questgiver to talk to you.

something that caught me off guard was on the Johnny ending I believe. Johnny starts talking about fighting for beauty or something like that after you beat Adam Smasher I believe. Johnny never said anything about that throughout the entire game. It was confusing. also, drive in first person. much better than third person.

as someone that went full hacking in my playthrough, I felt that hacking was kinda overpowerd, just like melee. I mean, it was fun to just be able to kill every single mob without even seeing them (and if for some reason I run out of RAM, just use ping on them and kill them with Widow Maker), but I fealt it was unbalanced. Some mods were really strong, others really not worth it at all. One of the ones I was hyped about was the suicide one, but then when I played the game I remember being very disappointed with it... I mean, I had 2 choices, one would insta kill the enemy, the enemies around him and costs me like 2-3 RAM, with a low cd. The other one (suicide), allow me to kill an enemy, taking several seconds for it, costing me like x2 the RAM and then it had a high cd... Besides, shopping for mods or crafting them was completed glitched when I played, items would not appear on your inventory, damage values would make no sense (the ones in the item description), etc... It was fun, just like everything else, not finished...

Very good review - Cyberpunk has immense potential, but the project contents must have been stripped-down severely as time was running out. In order to keep the lacking story, they most likely connected the open dots. This really created the illusion of having choices in the game.

Hmmm, I know "grindy" mechanics aren't everybody's cup of tea, but you know which game I think has the best replayability factor? Borderlands 2. Not just because of the 500 million different guns (let's be honest, 400 million of those will always be garbage and no niche build would make them fun, feasible, viable or memeable). But because of the badass tokens. The game rewarded you for doing what you would already be doing: killing enemies, shooting guns, looting, exploring and the additional reward was almost always useful: a small boost to a stat of your choosing. And then it incentivized you to change your playstyle (if you chose to), further elongating the time spent on certain characters; with the added effect that these bonuses could apply to any future characters. Granted, I had to put several hundred hours of gameplay to do this, but this opened up a whole lot of new playstyles. Some guns already had naturally high elemental proc chances, so what would happen if it were suddenly 50% higher and could proc twice or even 3 times per shot? What if Sal suddenly had enormous amounts of HP, and you decided to go for an HP regen build just for the hell of it? Let's make Axton be able to reload every weapon in a fraction of a second. Or double Sniper Sal, cause gun damage and TWO GUNS AT THE SAME TIME IS SERIOUSLY THE BEST IDEA EVER!

imo game is just bland. Even if they fixed all bugs and stuff, they absolutely lied about not only technical level but about everything else that's "in the game". While I don't havce a top of line pc and can pull rtx on many games but not on this one lol. Also, for a game to talks and hypes the gang so much (making even one trailer just for them) I was let down by how little they play a part into the story. Tiger claws are stormtroppers alongside maelstrom, animals dont even matter. Voodoo boys are cunts and doesnt even matter if they all die etc. Hope you had at least fun with it despite the issues.

For a game that's motto is "you can be anyone" there sure wasn't a lot of customisation options.
@AndyTomlins
3 жыл бұрын
Ive wondered about that. The choice of going first person perspective allows the design asthetic of the cyber overlays of what V is seeing with the relic melfunctions and coming in and out of consciousness but also renders any character customisation completely meaningless as you never see yourself. Its a hard choice which to go for. I know in vampire the masquerade bloodlines there was very little customisation and that was a driving influence of this games first person design.

Theres a reason its called trash. Having you start with no experience in anything. Like you never did anything in your life before. Bad role play design from Bethesda again Gate content off by making enemies tougher. You can one shot some massive orc in one dungeon but go to a higher level one and you cant scatch some pansy elf. Dude finally someone gets it about the real issue of the game. I don't care about the bugs. I want the upgraded experience i had with witcher 3, the details and the branching storylines. You can fix the bugs 6 months later, but you can't remake the storylines of the game. That is the real issue for me because we will never get what was promised and it is such a wasted opportunity.

but this story is better than W3 even without multiple choices. W3 is chasing a daughter the whole game to save a world - most basic stuff. Here story is much more different from every game. The whole thing why this game is so hated is that it is not game for kids. And most gamers are kids. Language, jokes, whores, gays end even posters in the city like "milf patrol" Do You remember when V discovered place where there are producing drugs and Jony recognised it by smell it was one of the funniest moments in game. But ask any kid who is sommeliere and they would not know. I am comparing this game to Assasins Creed Valhala which I am playing now and after 60h it is boring now and cyberpunk 130 hours and I can still play it again. What more is great music in this game I even listen some tracks when I was not playing. Endings are also great and the fact that there is no "good" ending is even better bc life is brutal and we will fight for our live in DLCs

@@mightylordkuba 1. Idk what about torture, religious extremism, magic induced massacres, burying aborted fetuses, etc to name a few is "for kids". Witcher 3 also has whores, so that's an odd point... 2. Regardless, having a more complicated plot doesn't mean you automatically have a better story. Everything sounds shit when you reduce it to it's base elements. Lord of the Rings is just a rag tag group going on a trek. Shawshank Redemption is just a prison break. Godfather is just an Italian mob film.

I think the lesson cyberpunk has taught us is to avoid fanboyism. Just because a company makes a few outstanding products doesn’t mean all of them will be great and vice versa. I’ve seen people hating on TW3 just because CP77 wasn’t up to their expectations. People shouldn’t raise their expectations to unreasonable levels just because previous games were amazing.

Thing is I’d argue that people’s expectations where that high because CDPR fed the hype. The fact that they made TW3 only added a sort of credibility to their lies. I don’t think people’s expectations where that unreasonable based on what they where being told by CDPR and so the root of the problem you’re describing is less about people having unrealistic expectations and more about CDPR abusing the trust of its customers.The true lesson for me at least is don’t trust these companies they are here to sell you a product they are not your friend.
