I'm not a big fan of Katy, but I really liked this video (and the song). It is a complete satire of current feminism and a breath of fresh air that allows you to take a good breath of air in the midst of these tides of "well-keptism." I really had a lot of fun watching the video and the chorus of the song is very catchy. And as others have already said on many sites...it looks like a video of what Vought could do on The Boys, and I love it hahaha

Hey Georgina ! Thanks for your video. The meaning of the clip is a methaphora about her career. The beginning is her successful times, being a strong woman. The enclume and the fact that she's blowing herself like a balloon is a reference to her flop, with Witness and Smile when she was criticised a lot. And then this is her, changed and powerful again, into a messy society which represents how people see her today and how confused her career is right now. At the end, the little girl is asking "who are you" because new generations think of Katy as an old and former singer, locked in the 2010s. She is screaming "I am Katy Perry" to show that it is her great revival, that she was never dead and to make a conquest of the new generation as a public. This is the proof that she is clever about her own situation. The song and especially the clip also are a satire of feminism. That is why there are some clichés. About you worries for Katy's career and what she will become, I think she is quite clever. This song refers to her past and lets us think that she can't and doesn't want to evolve, that she juste want to go backwards like you said. But I think that her album will be more diversified, and that she will surprise us with brand new things. It is just a way to play with us, and also a strategy to keep her old public and grab a new one just after. It's my interpretation of the situation
@Caule56

The song is... alright. A fun, albeit forgettable Summer bop with vaguely feminist lyrics... I find the timing of it a bit sus, dropping one week after Kesha's Joyride which is a much more upbeat and memorable number with pop culture references to Mean Girls... But that's what I'd expect at this point... Plus Chappell Roan's Good Luck Babe is still the best song of the season along with Espresso by Sabrina Carpenter... That's not in doubt! Those two have lived rent free in my head since the first play... Allie X's album is also worth a listen. It was short-listed for the Polaris Prize here in Canada which is like the Pullitzer for pop music. Girl With No Face, Black Eye, Staying Power, all great glittering synthwave pop...

Smile is my personal fav album tbh I really connected to it personally...so I may not agree with it being bland but I guess music is subjective...for this song there is a lot going on ngl... the song is good but very weak compare to her other lead singles... and for the dr.luke situation she has a contract she cant get out of which fo witness/smile she didn't let him work on, but she has to for this one which is unfortunate but its crazy how they hate on her not him instead.. and this video is all satire & sarcasim so whatever is here she talked about it is meant as commentary of how they see woman that way or the feminsim people pretend to be they act like this is it..so that's why it sounds/looked polished

I dont really love the song so this isn’t a defense of it, but I do think we should examine why the “best in pop” is usually relegated to a group of women in their 20s. Could her opening listless vocal over the pallid cliché lyrics of "sexy confident - so intelligent" be described as text-painting? this is how i would describe the video: the first part is a surreal representation of how women used to be portrayed commercially back in the day. Now she gets crushed and comes to the future where being defined as a woman is part of an exaggerated apocalyptic world where liberalism & feminism has lost it. and it’s also commentary on how people have been trying to define her as sexy , an idol of sex as well as a political propaganda for the lgbtq people. how this exact situation where shes being hated on is, it must be crazy to go through all that. i think this song is just a statement and it’s working

I think it's a massive satire. For instance, the "Whiskey For Women" thing is a criticism of how brands sometimes use "feminism" with commercial purposes (like it's the same whiskey, but the one for women has cute font letters and colours, and it's more expensive, even though it's the same product). Moreover, I think all the first part before she's crashed is a huge satire, then you have like all these pictures from the internet when you look for "independent women" and, after that, the reality: different types of bodies, of professions, of women. I think most people got it wrong when it came out
@018sadler

My interpretation of it. It's a alternative universe that had a matriarch instead of patriarch. Like a tongue in cheek point out of a double standard. My interpretation of the video: it starts with a 'satirical and on the nose' (Katy's words) representation of this shallow and capitalistic version of feminism that often "empowers" women to continue being objectified and buy products 'made for women'. Then, she gets smashed as a representation of a 'reset' in her life, through which she achieves a broader understanding of women and feminism. The second part of the video is mostly trying to highlight different sides of women, the mix of power and softness in her own half-robot body, the chaotic, the divine, the strength etc. And then she reintroduces herself to the world, as a new woman (and also to the newer TikTok generation that might not know her).

Just terrible tbh. The song shows almost zero artistic growth from Katy. She hasn’t evolved at all. Shes still desperately trying to recapture her 2010s success and the industry has moved on. The Dr Luke collab is inexcusable. She wasn’t contractually obligated. She chose to. And also, she’s since said “no no it’s satire”. If you have to over explain your video’s satire, you’ve failed to convey it.

I think Katy Perry was trying to make a feminist anthem where she starred as some type of feminist icon, but when the video tanked and people said it sounded like a parody of feminism was when she came out and said it was intentional sarcasm. Personally, I'm not buying it. I think that was her just backpedalling and trying to say "So you think it's a parody.. Yeah, that was..um.. intentional". Also, I heard the album name was originally going to be KP6, but then it was changed to 143. Once again, I think she changed things because of the negative reaction to the first title. The part at the end where she grabs the Iphone and ringlight and proclaims "I'm Katy Perry" is her basically introducing herself to the TikTok generation who were too young when she had her last reign of frame approximately 10 years ago or so. Overall, the whole thing is really just a confusing mess.
