Great to see these superb instruments receiving some appreciation. They are top notch. I have a USA Strat and top end Jackson Soloist - love them! But...l love my GM-4T more. I keep hoping the rise in popularity of headless guitars might result in these being made again.

Dude, I’ve had a Steinberger with the transtrem for over 10 years and could never figure out why I couldn’t get it to work the way it should. Now I know from your video that it wasn’t me: it’s been those D'Addario strings I’d been using all these years!

Great Video! I've owned a GM4TA for 30+ years (bought it new) and once I got it, I've hated playing anything else. One minor thing you didn't mention that's really convenient and really the most useful (for me at least) about the transtrem is that if you want to tune down to E-flat (which doesn't have a notch) you can just turn the knob in the back and leave the bridge floating. It's also handy for trying to figure out those recordings where the pitch is a little off by doing the same thing to "tune up" to the recording. I am surprised you had difficulty with the D'Addarios. I used to use the LaBellas and they were great strings, but at some point, I started breaking the high E strings almost as soon as I restrung, then broke the extra high E they provide with the set. It was probably 10 years before I ever broke a single high E string and maybe they had some bad runs at the time, but I got tired of breaking strings and switched to D'Addarios and have never had any issues getting the transtrem to work properly and have only broken 1 high E string for as long as I can remember. I have used sets 0.009-0.042, 0.009-0.046 and 0.010-0.046 and always been able to get it to transpose, although with the 0.010 set, the adjustment on the G string was at the limit. Did you use the ESXL110's or the NYXLS1046's? (The 0.010 set I used were the NYXLS1046, so I can't say for certain that the ESXL110's can be made to transpose). When you set up with the 0.010 set, do you make sure to adjust the intonation with the saddles so that the strings are in tune at the 24th fret and then adjust the transtrem again? According to D'Addario (marketeering) all of their Steinberger strings are supposed to be calibrated.

Appreciate the comment. I left out that on purpose, as I have indeed tried that, but found in my experience that it has negative effects on the return to zero position for standard tuning. In a pinch it might do, but for any serious recording or live use I don't think it's a viable method (at least in my experience).

I got the cheaper Steinberger GR-4, with the less fancy r-trem. OK, it can’t do the up and down-tuning tricks, but it’s easier to handle, and with a string adapter one can use ordinary strings. It had 2 SD Hot rails and 1 SD Custom. I changed to a Dimarzio Injector neck in the neck, and a Dimarzio Area 61 in the mid, but kept the SD Custom in the bridge. I also changed to a 250k volume pot, otherwize the Dimarzios will sound bright and sterile in a guitar with maple body and carbon fibre neck. The guitar was made in Newburgh in 1991, so the r-trem was worn out. I swapped it out to a new JCustom r-trem, that works very good. Now the guitar follows me everywhere in its small original softcase, no need to take off the neck (!), it’s accepted as is being my cabin bag on airplanes. The new Dimarzio pickups sounds smooth Strat, and the SD Custom in the bridge sounds heavy rock, in a small Blackstar travel amp. It must be the ultimate travel guitar?

I have this guitar but changed out the pickups with active ones. the guitar is one of the best guitars I have. I love this guitar and will NEVER get rid of it. This is my main guitar and is an original Steinberger from the early 90's. I don't have the trans trem but that being said, I love this guitar and will never get rid of this. This is seriously one, of it not the best, guitar I have, And, believe me, I have a Strat and an early 80's Les Paul Custom Gibson' that will stack up against this. That being said, they each have their own features. Also, I would never get rid of them. I will keep them until I go to my grave. I have a Squire Strat that plays like no other guitar I have. I paid virtually nothing for this guitar and will never part with it, It plays like BUTTER!. I would compare this to my HHS Strat. All I can say is you can find an old expensive guitar that plays perfect for you or you can find a cheap guitar that plays perfect for you. Just find the guitar that feels right for you and take itl DO NOT worry about price. You will be surprised that a cheaper guitar will feel so much better than one that is thousands of dollar more. Its not the price, its the feel and playability. How it feels in your hands. I cant say much more here. Just tale this info to heart. Everything is the feel in your hands. Other than that is the salesman selling you an expensive piece of shit that is NOT for you.

Great video with some brilliant information. I just got a GM4T from HeadlessUSA and couldn't be happier. I was attracted to them seeing DG use them (His recording guitar on MLOR was a GL3T too) I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I got it, but it soon found it's place within my collection. It excels at clarity under super high gain - and the upper midrange through that EMG 85 is just sensational. I really like the Bridge/Middle position as due to pickup spacing, it balances well. Interesting too what you said about the 24 frets and the neck position - makes sense when you think about it!

@@AdamLightProductions No problem! I must admit I use D'addarios and I am happy with them. I believe my guitar came with them from Headless USA and the transposing feature works well? I don't use it that often though, tbh. They're hidden gems. I like how, as you say, they do not replace Strats/LPs - they are very much their own thing.

Hi, this is video is great Thank-you, I know it’s a big ask but would there be any chance of you uploading another steinberger video demonstrating more clean sounds in the various positions ( maybe playing a few standard wedding band type riffs. These guitars are so rare in the UK and go for very high prices , I want one but I feel like if I can’t do my usual gigs with it then it’s too much of an investment. No pressure and great playing. Great Video and perspective on one of the greatest and most versatile designs out there. I am still on lookout for the "one" i.e. a real Newburgh model. I currently have a R trem spirit as daily driver. a zt3 with 3rd edition trans trem which I love although has less range of adjustment( 4 semi tones ) total but doesn't require calibrated strings as have more adjustment range individually and a demon which I have in drop A as is 28 5/8" scale length with built in capo and I added internal gk3 for synth in addition to on board piezo. I would love a ver 2 transcale for its ability to cover most all ranges in one instrument . I agree none of the Steinbergers replace your LP,Strat or Tele etc but are far more versatile and useful day to day. especially in tuning stability regardless the model even newer ones. I have played a few originals but they are pretty pricey as coveted items by those who know. thanks for vid.

I liked these guitars other than a few nit picky things. The fretboard stuck to far above the body, the neck was too fat, and I did not like the back of the neck feel. It would be nice if it was updated with the graphite neck. I remember when this guitar came out. A bunch of people starting using them. Gilmore, Leslie West, VanHalen, etc.. then the novelty seemed to have phased out.

@@johncecilia4517 After considering your comment for a bit, I think the presence of a zero fret makes up more of the sound of the guitar rather than the pickups. Yes, EMGs do have a certain sound to them, but the presence of open chords in different tuning positions on that song gives credence to the zero fret having the majority of influence on the tone.

A refret is a major operation. I asked one of the places that can do it what a refret would cost and if I recall, they quoted something like $600.00-$800.00. (In my opinion, it would be well worth it if it was necessary.) The problem is the possibility of damaging the composite when removing the old frets. The only places I know that can do it are Headless USA, Peekamoose and some place in Nashville, but I can't recall the name. Peekamoose will also plek it. Not sure about the other two places. On the other hand, I've had a GM4TA for 30+ years (Newbergh model), it's the only electric I will play, I play quite a lot every day and I've had the frets leveled and crowned once 2 years ago. I haven't needed a refret and there is enough fret wire remaining that it ought to make through leveling and crowning a couple more times, by which time, I will likely be dead.

I had my Steinberger GM2T refretted with stainless steel frets about 5 years ago. The luthier that did my refret said it was no different than any other guitar and was easy and he didn’t charge me anything extra. It absolutely plays like butter with the stainless steel frets.

Reason to get hyped for the Original Steinberger's? How about innovation, unique materials, transposing trem system, Eddie Van Halen, Vito Bratta, Mike Rutherford, Geddy Lee, Sting, Allan Holdsworth and many others. Steinberger couldn't afford to endorse artists, but these players still played them. Strandberg's artist roster? , never heard of at least 98 percent of them. Sorry, the Steinberger GM series are way sexier than the Strandberg's.
