This talk was given in a shorter form at GDC 2013, where it was focused primarily on issues relating to contract game design work. The presentation at UCSC will expand on that theme to include game developers of all stripes (engineers, artists, producers, and yes, designers too). While many schools and talks cover the basics of game development, few talk about "the job of having a career".
This talk is meant to be highly action-oriented, and will help you in your career whether you plan to 'go rogue' or aim to land a full-time job. It guides you through step-by-step instructions for setting up shop as a freelancer, deciding how much to charge, finding and negotiating contracts, and dealing with client issues (which inevitably come up).
