Hey, Little Brother… A really nice job on your tribal map! Your name has gone down in history as an important cartographer. At this house we are watching Reservation Dogs, the series. That got us inspired to search our Trail of Tears relocation. Although my grandfather settled down in very southern Illinois and didn’t go onto Oklahoma, your map and others helped locate the Cherokee homeland in the Southeast and speculate on the route they took. Thank you, Euah.

I was wondering if you had the Winnemem Wintu from the Mc Cloud River in Northern CA on your map. Our traditional tribal lands are above Redding, CA. (way North). There are more tribes in CA, than many other states. The Gov. is trying to erase us and 90% of all CA tribes. They've come up with a bogus thing called 'Unrecognized tribes' now and we are one of them. Only 10% of CA tribes are recognized and some of them have Casinos now. I was just wondering if you've ever heard of us.
@AaronCarapellaTribalmaps

Hello Helene, Yes I know quite a bit about your Winnemem Wintu people....I understand about the current struggles for recognition and the rights to continue practicing ceremonies....I am an AIM member and know people who have gone up there to defend in your struggles......I ahve the name "Wintu" on the map, but am trying to limit it to "Nations" in California, because there are so many "bands" or clan groups of larger tribes that they just won't fit on my maps. I am going to create a map of just California soon though, because I feel bad leaving out of of these groups. The map will be huge and break down Nations in to subtribes, villages, clan groups, etc to represent as many peoples as possible. I will be sure to proudly include the Winnemem Wintu people on it. The maps I have made show historical Nations. I refuse to leave out any tribes just because they are not "federally recognized" by the same government that attempted annihilation. Thank you Helene

Hello. I am interested in your work. I wonder if you are being supported by Indigenous Peoples who are cartographers-such as yourself? I am interested in buying one of your maps, that includes Mexico. Will you make one of Central and South America? I have traveled to the Amazon Rainforest in Peru and Ecuador and quite a bit in Mexico. I collect maps when in those countries. I recently got a map in Cozumel which was very good, and showed the various temples, pyramids and Sacred places in the Yucatan. I got it at a educational shop and it was very fair priced as well beautifully made. I have a friend @ Western Michigan University who is from Argentina and is also a Cartographer for the University. I do not know if she does this area of focus, but I will share you information. She may contact you. Her name is: Ms. E.Lopez. Thank-you for your work and time.

Very interesting, but what snapshot(s) in time does this represent? That is, how good is our documentation of the Pacific NW from 1600? Also, if you were to do another snapshot from, say, 50 years before this one, how different would it be? The tribes/nations are all native, but their locations weren't static. I see a lot of people use this kind of thing to say, "See, that should be our land" but viewed from 50-100 years before, it was probably someone else's land.

I really do not like that word tribe, it has colonial undertones to it! It is not what we called ourselves to identify us separately! Nations for me is more appropriate! I think I would rather be call First Nation groups than tribes! If you think about it, in away it empowers colonial ideology of superiority that we indigenous are uncivilized living in tribal! Nope can not like the word tribe and I doubt you will find many Mi'kmaq people call ourselves the Mi'kmaq tribe accept for a few members in a drum group who watched boys in the hood one too many times and now got a pep in their step! We are the Mi'kmaq Nation! Use indigenous groups of the Americas! Yah I like that one! why do we allow this perpetuation of these colonialist ideologies? There are many first nations who even call themselves tribes! Why would you allow these Colonial Stereotype name tags to persist? Empower your Nation and call yourselves a Nation not a tribe! I am Mi'kmaq of Mi'kma'ki, the Mi'kmaq Nation and I live in the Shubenacadie First Nations Community with my people.

I agree with your stance. Usually I use "Nation" in referencing Native American or First Nations peoples.....the term "tribe" is usually used in the connotation of a cohesive, culturally -related group. When I say tribe, I mean it in this sense. Sometimes there are many "tribes" or sub'tribes" within a Native Nation.....I guess I use the term interchangeably sometimes, all the while recognizing that Native people are completely autonomous from the colonial powers that attempted conquest. Using the term Nation sometimes also undermines the thought of an Indigenous people. because back in the day many Nations were very loosely-related, and not all members of the larger Nation felt subject to rules by it,but rather exercised complete autonomy as subtribes, individual towns or villages, while at the same time recognizing their connection to the larger confederacy. This-of course-varies depending on which of the hundreds of Nations we are referring to. In Canada the term First Nations is adhered to much more strongly than in the US, where saying Nation or tribe can be interchangeable and accepted as so. There are exceptions to this though

"even Native CHOOSE to forget us" adding a little bit of intent where maybe it's not warranted, no? There's more than 500 tribes just in this single nation state that we call the United States, i was more than likely not deliberate, give the guy a break.

No offense, I do find it odd that such a map does not include tribes from south of the border? There have been quite a bit of maps that do exist that cover an even more broad spectrum of First nations....if this map project were to truly focus on the nations it for some reason or another seems to marginalize, then i would consider this a worthy map.
