I'm working on a jig that will hold my chainsaw off of my tool rest, I will be able to take a cut on a rough piece on the lathe (not moving) and index the headstock and repeat to create an evenly faceted roughed out shape

Positive air pressure - brilliant - i was lucky enough to purchase a laboratory type vacuum blower complete with a Variac at an auction - cant understand why this is not more common - but then i guess salling filters is a major income earner - I use mine mostly for cellulose spraying - imagine never needing to worry about when your filter needs replacing - or having the money for an endless supply.

Thanks for the support and appreciating how challenging the creative process is. I personally love the transformative process of woodturning. I think it is also very cool to be able to make a video the same time I'm doing this work to show some insight into the many steps involved. I am working on the concept of a "how its made" style video, I think people will enjoy more description of what I'm doing. Thank you again

Thank you for all of the comments and enjoying my videos. I call this style of bowl "Natural Edge" because I have maintained the natural bark edge on this piece instead of turning it flat like a salad bowl. I like this rough eccentric edge as it contrasts to the finely finished 2000 grit finish of the bowl. It also creates a lot of off- balanced weight in the piece which makes for different challenges in the making of the piece.

Wow I love your clip and work- realy cool. I have the VB 36 too and love it. Haven't had time yet to do large work but after watching you I am going to take the plunge and find a big piece of wood. Thanks for the show.

The turning process I employ is called green wood turning or twice turned. Wood can crack and warp as it dries, what I do is rough turn the bowl from a wet fresh cut log. The bowl that is roughed out is turned 2-3 times thicker than the final thickness will be. I then let the piece dry in this roughed out shape, in this case for 3 years.

It's true there is a lot of waste in turning. The logs I get are salvaged from tree trimmers and destined for the green waste facility to get ground up for mulch. I use the shavings to build thick beds around our trees and gardens, but it's nice to get some cherished bowls out of it too.

The VB36 is an amazing and dynamic tool. Look for them on the web under Hegner tools UK. I mount the massive faceplate to the piece while its in the back of the truck, I lift the logs straight off the truck with an engine hoist and mount it on the lathe.

I wear a positive air pressure helmet on my head. I have a blower in the attic that takes fresh air from outside and pumps it into my helmet. This insures that I am breathing fresh air whenever I am in my shop.

For me the positive pressure air helmet is a necessity. I sand all my work to 2000 grit and it is very dangerous and uncomfortable to breathe. The fresh air helmet provides clean air and keeps me cool.

Very true. A lot of the Hawaiian woods I work with are very oily and any 2000 grit wood dust would be dangerous to breathe. I love what I do. I want to be able to do it for a long time.

Both you and Aaron Hammer said I'm Waaay off on the cost of the finished product. I'm retired now and I've always wanted to grab those two ft lengths of felled maple you always see at the side of a country road (especially after a Sandy) at make a statue or large salad bowl. Thought about using a small chain saw and hand chisel set -- nice way to spend some afternoons outdoors. Had I known you get this kind of money . . . I gotta research more on this subject. ciao.

What's with the dislikes? Are people really that shallow? Nowhere in the title does this say it's a how-to, guide, or anything else. It is what it says it is, a helluva great talent doing a helluva lot harder job than most of us. This is pure, unadulterated skill and art at it's best! Many thanks to you Mr Hammer for sharing this amazing time lapse for the world to see. Cheers mate, I aspire to do something as amazing as this, and share it as well someday.

Hey my friend, nice work! Kudos. I would imagine that others dislike the video because most people are used to the editing style of "How It's Made". That show can take an enormously complicated production of something and condense the process to 4 -5 minutes with voice over explanation and no fast forwarding at all. Your vid is about the same length so I would suggest this style because others can see what you are actually doing. .....

Yeah but the idiots out there like myself don't know what tools you're using at any given moment. I thought you were making a more eliptical shaped bowl and were slow turning to use a sander and air chisel or something, but I'm just guessing, couldn't really tell. Looks like fun; must be a good living. Bet a bowl like that goes for $300.

And if you go to the website as instructed to see the finished bowl, the site is dead as expected. This kinda nullifies the entire video since you can't see the finished product. Typical of youtube. You have to sort through the garbage.

You wear a face shield to protect your face from chips and the like. I'm guessing the long tube is some type of respirator to avoid breathing in wood dust, which can be carcinogenic and just overall bad for your lungs.
