Daily updates are brilliant, keep them coming. I used to be a parts delivery driver for a company in Warminster Wiltshire delivering Fiat Lancia parts. Loved all the Fiats, especially the early Fiat 500. How times have changed, as it was about 45 years ago, I have now retired.

Absolutely loved these when they came out! 😍 As others have said they’ve aged really well and that 5 cylinder lump sounds epic. Really hope it’s as solid as it seems and very glad your thinking of saving it and putting the work in as u hardly ever see them these days. Think this will make some great content for the channel and I’m looking forward to seeing the progress and end result.

Now you’re talking James, had the Bravo HGT back in the late 90’s, a 5 pot 20 valve that had a soundtrack to die for, the 20v turbo must be a beast of a motor in a car that small , looking forward to see you’re updates on this one , worth saving in my opinion, keep it standard with the factory colour, upgrade the brakes and suspension should be a looker and a real hoot to drive , you’ll get loads of smiles per gallon with this one 👏👏👏👏

The Pininfarina badges on the sides, let water in which causes the rot behind that panel. The boot floor rots out on the seams at the sides and rear panel. The bumper mounts front and rear nicknamed 'eifel towers' rot out. Radiator surround rots out, bonnet clam shell rots on the inner seams, chassis rails underneath rot, floor pans rot, front chassis rots where the front brake pipe flexi joins the hard pipe, sills rot either end. Sunroofs cause even more rot.

Absolute legend of a car James! We have got 3 20v Turbo's, 2 in poor state that need a LOT of work and 1 immaculate one we use for shows and weekends and when not working, in other words whenever I get the chance.. Our tidy black red one has 42,000 miles from new and I am the second owner. One of the rough 2 has 68,000 miles and we are the 3rd owners and the other of the rough 2 that we use for spare parts has 275,000 miles on it believe it or not and we are its 7th and final owner! We also have 2 beautiful Fiat Punto Turbo's in extremely nice condition which I happen to love very much. We also have a 1988 E reg 1600 Lancia Delta HF Turbo which I have had since I was 22 years old, I am now 47!!! It is only down to sheer hard graft I have these cars and it's because of hard graft I'm able to keep them running. I hope you have good luck with your Turbo James, if you need any parts and if we are able to help just let me know...👍🙂👍

Looking forward to seeing the progress on this, always loved these cars and would love to own one. As for the clutch, I remember having a similar issue with a MK3 escort in the 90's that had stood for sometime, I put it in first gear and turned ignition without foot on clutch, after a couple of jerks came a bang and the clutch had released itself and all was good... I will not be held responsible if the timing jumps a tooth though! 😂👍

Hi James, Well worth Saving, when i have encountered as clutch plate stuck to the fly wheel in the past, something that was passed on to me by a old school mechanic that has worked is to (if can can get the car running) wedge the clutch pedal to the floor and let the car fully warm up and keep running for a good while, release the clutch pedal, this may unstick the plate from the fly wheel

Great cars, I've had 3...2 20v Turbo's and a VIS 170..both great but the 20v is an absolute hoot. I'd pay particular attention to the brake lines at the compensator , the lines corrode at the unions on the top as water pools there....same as the early alfa 916 cars, same platform ( tipo )

FCSS or Midlands car servicing best bet for these - sorted me out with parts and work on mine. Rust biggest issue but often from inside out. Take off the rear door cards and check behind - the pinnafarina badges let in moisture that can get inner cills. Then boot floor, lift the carpet and look down the seam join to the rear quarter panel.

Not many checks you can do with a clutch apart from checking the fluid level and seeing if it works when engine running. The clutch slave cylinder is outside of the bell housing on this one according to another comment, so that's easily checkable.

They are great cars, i've had mine for years and done nothing but the obvious maintenance. Once sorted and if they have little to no rust I can't see why you could not use them regularly, I fact I think all cars would prefer that. As an owner of a 1997 FC 20VT your clutch problem is probably the clutch master cylinder which is a consumable item but a nightmare to change as its right by the steering column / pedals and under there is tight!!...Still , if its rust free you must do all you can to get it in Top shape : re-spray, engine, suspension/shocks, interior tidy up, led lights, etc....You will then have a truly great machine even in modern times....PS: finally an engine tune, perhaps big turbo, intercooler etc....You will then have a shatteringly quick car. Goodluck!

I had one of these about 15 years ago, same colour but with a toffee/butterscotch leather interior. It was fast as a b*st*ard, and just a super nice driving environment. I could drive for hours and step out as fresh as a daisy. I traded it in for a Mercedes SLK, which seemed like a good idea at the time. The Brembos I wasn't all that impressed with, my old BMW 325i had better brakes and they were absolutely stock. Derestricted from the 155mph limit and mildly tuned these are 170mph cars easy, if it had launched 5 years earlier it would have been classed as a supercar.

Brembo calipers with 305mm discs were standard on 20VT. The LE got red Brembo on front and red calipers on rear. The LE also got drilled from discs. Recaro seats in red and black went into the LE with various titanium painted bits (headlamp bezels, fuel cap, rear lamp clusters etc), push button start, skirts/chin splitters etc etc. Big money now, not sure what they actually sell for though as there’s a lot of gas around them. The engines are really good, oil pressure hot should be around 3 bar on a hot engine idling in summer. Always run them on 10W60 for better oil pressure and to minimise consumption. Timing belt is on a 5 year interval. Note that the power steering belt system is fragile and often the tensioner fails and chucks the belt into the timing belt. This literally happened on my brothers LE days after we did the belt, the faulty part was a brand new Dayco PAS tensioner that detached in two (clearly not made my Dayco anymore). Even though the timing slipped there was no valve to piston contact (he is a lucky chief). Floors rot, radiator support panels rot, rear quarters rot, sunroof cassettes rust in situ and seize. Basic chassis based on Fiat Tipo lol. Bilstein B6 work well but lowering does cause a lot of ground clearance issues.
