Gilroy Stadium, located in Gary, Indiana, opened in 1956. At that time, the growing city needed a larger, more modern venue to host sporting events and other community gatherings. The state-of-the-art stadium featured an electronic scoreboard, modern lighting and sound systems, concession stands, and even a Ferris wheel. One of the stadium's most popular events was a 1965 performance by the Jackson 5, who had won a local radio station's talent competition. After the stadium's abandonment in 1975, nature gradually reclaimed the once-bustling venue over the ensuing decades.
