Yesterday and today together now, life didn’t allow me to update you all yesterday as cygnet had to take priority. I’m sure you’ll all understand.
When I got to the lake yesterday, the geese rushed to greet me so I decided to feed them before going to the swans in the hope of keeping them away from Sydney to minimise the stress and upset. It didn’t go to plan though… does it ever?
Two tiny goslings came running over to me with some adult geese that were clearly not their parents. The goslings were crying loudly and running around in a panic. They kept trying to get onto the water with ether swans which would not have gone well, so I tried to catch them but couldn’t. I did manage to get them away from the swans though, so decided to try and find their family so I could guide them back to where the goslings were and reunite them that way.
Finding the family was easy, herding them to where their two lost goslings were was anything but, and I had to get to work… thankfully Stacey checked them later and all goslings were with their families so they must have managed to find each other after I left.
I went straight home from work yesterday rather than going to any lakes, so I could spend some time with my dog and home animals. I’m tired, doing way too much and get married in three days so tried to reduce my stress a bit… Stacey always does lake checks now which makes it easier for me to do other things when I need to, but last night she needed me as she found one of the cygnets all alone and stuck in the mud. She cleaned the mud off and kept baby warm until I got there. We tried to give him back to Wilma straightaway, but baby was too cold and exhausted to make the effort to reach his siblings and it was getting late, no way could we leave a cold and wet exhausted cygnet on the bank overnight. So after calling the sanctuary for advice and confirmation, baby came home with me to spend the night on a heat pad to dry out and warm up.
This morning at 5am, baby was bright and alert, calling out loudly for attention so I got up to give him food and reheated his pad before setting off to reunite him with his family, and it went perfectly 🥰
The lake was very badly flooded this morning so without a doubt baby would have died if we had left him last night. It was even more badly flooded this evening, but Wilma is doing an amazing job of keeping her little loves safe, as she always does.
