Sounds like Charmalagne was letting Arthur know, that there was an issue with traders from Mercia posing as pilgrims to avoid tolls and taxes. Pilgrims would be passing through mainland Europe to holy sites, not from mainland to Mercia.

The so-called "dark ages" are an interesting time in history.

They certainly are, one of my favorite historical periods. I definitely plan on posting more on the topic

Do you think “dark ages” will be renamed ? In all fairness, it is more interesting than dark

@@luxcat89 some historians are debating this today. Now we are starting to see the use of the terms of “post-Roman” and early medieval.

Offa & Charlamagne were among the most successful Germanic barbarian Kings to inherent the Western Roman Empire. Maybe throw in Theodoric the Great in there also. They were draped in a lot of the Roman pageantry while aware of the presence of Constantinople in the east. Always a fascinating time period of Europe! Well done sir!

"hungarian sword" might mean that they still connected any nomadic people from the steps as Huns... applying it on the Avars and, later , on the Magyars...
@abandonedhistoryUS
Жыл бұрын
Certainly. Avar is just the most likely due to proximity and the fact Charlemagne campaigned in Avaria but could have definitely come from earlier groups or other steppe groups

My favorite video on this channel so far! Insanely informative, and it was helpful to have the portions of the letter read to us. Fascinating how a small letter can matter so much between such important men. Thank you for letting us know the background on King Offa and providing all of the great pictures. Also really enjoyed the editing haha
