After sneaking past security we find whats left of Newcastle General Hospital. Building started in 1868 and was opened in 1870 as the infirmary for Newcastle union workhouse. In 1921 the administration was seperated from the workhouse and renamed The Wingrove Hospital. In 1948 it was changed again to Newcastle General Hospital and became part of the NHS. Across the road is Angel Heights, this was the nurses quarters and it was linked by an underground tunnel, which still survives but is bricked off. When the Newcastle NHS foundation trust reorganised, most of the acute services were moved to the RVI and Freeman Hospitals between 2008 and 2010. Within a few years the whole hospital was closed down and has lay derelict ever since. It has now been bought by Newcastle university and they have plans to turn it into a campus for ageing and vitality.
