I think it delves into themes of nostalgia, disillusionment, and a longing for escape. The song opens with a sense of detachment from reality, as the speaker wipes away the "summer air" and refers to a photograph from 1973, a symbol of a distant past. This sets the tone for reflection on lost connections and the passage of time. The repeated refrain "God only knows I wanna be the other side of misery" suggests a desire for change or a break from the current state of dissatisfaction. The mention of "Fluorescein," a chemical compound often used in fluorescent dyes, serves as a metaphor for transformation and the ability to create something new, albeit potentially chaotic or ugly. The inability to articulate thoughts ("Can't get a word out anyway") highlights a sense of frustration or feeling stifled. The mention of "TV" as a predominant source of knowledge or influence further emphasizes a disconnect from reality and a reliance on superficial distractions. The lines "Inside, I rise above this shallow world / Inside, I rise above this sorrow" suggest an internal struggle for transcendence or resilience in the face of adversity. Despite the longing for change and escape, there is a recognition that one must confront and rise above the challenges of the present. Overall, I think it presents a complex exploration of inner turmoil, longing for transformation, and the search for meaning in a world that often feels disconnected and shallow.

I'd like to take a moment to thank memes for eventually bringing me to this band and album. Sounds like so much of what I grew up wanting to be immersed in, it's like a part of me that's been missing for ages.

I don't like emo rock bands with high voices that sing about being depressed or some sort of mental illness ex. Set it off(the band) , but this is so much more different and makes me appreciate it even more

Thus is part of a genre called post-hardcore. EDIT: I MEANT POST-GRUNGE NOT POST-HARDCORE. Post-grunge is accurately the genre of Abandoned Pools. Post-hardcore is an ancestor to emo/screamo, but doesn't deserve the disrespect emo gets 🤣
