Neat building. They are tearing down to many historical places😢😢😢

Great video. I lived there close to the tower in Baxter for nearly 30 years, how I loved sitting on the porch and watching those L&N trains!!!!

Railroads started doing away with Interlocking control towers many years ago and in favor of dispatcher control from a dispatch office inside a division headquarters building. Railroads saved a lot of money eliminating tower operator jobs and transferring the work the operators did to the dispatcher. In some ways I'm not surprised the tower building is still standing as CSX recently demolished a roundhouse in Columbus Ohio after being on CSX's demolition list for the past 4 years. That roundhouse was the sole surviving roundhouse in Columbus and was well over 100 years old. Great video and keep up your great exploration work of Appalachia.

I just LOVE the sound of train whistles echoing off those mountains. It brings back memories of listening to them as they rolled through Barbourville whenever I came "home" for a visit. The last time I was there, I managed to get a recording of it on my phone. Living in Chicagoland, I am no strangers to trains. I'm 2.5 miles south of one the main lines into Chicago. If the wind's blowing from the north, I can hear the freight trains' whistles quite easily, even with my storm windows closed. It's not qquite the same as in KY! Thanks for the visit to the RR tower!

In the 60's and 70's the Loyall Train Yard was a very busy place . I was born in the early 50's , and I can still barely remember the old L&N Steam Engines , and the old water towers where the engines would pull up , and fill the boilers with water to make steam . Someone once said , "Times change , but everything stays the same" WRONG ! LOL . Great video , thanks for posting .

We had one in Seymour Indiana. Don't remember when they stopped using it but they tore it down shortly after they closed it.

I just love hearing the train horns echoing through the mountains. My sisters & I would hear the L & N train that runs through Barbourville KY blow its horn when it came through town back in the day when we'd visit my grandparents during the summers in the mid-60s & early 70s.

My papaw worked for the L&N. I'm sure he was in that building on a regular basis. I hope they do not tear it down!!! But if they do, i want a brick or a piece of it. It would mean so much to me!

It looks solid...it could be given a second life as something else, or maybe turned into a mini museum. Some old buildings aren't torn down as much as taken apart, and the materials reused....

The train in the video goes to Eastman in Kingsport. They take one cut over. Usually change crews and come back to Loyall to get the 2nd cut. When both cuts of cars are empty they bring back both cuts back in one train. Usually about 90 cars. Also there is Shoestring tag at Hagans switchback in Lee county.
