"Chiquitita" means 'little girl' (with affection) in spanish And the melody have a spanish tune, specialy by the acustic guitar But the center is the wonderful piano, like akmost all ABBA songs "Chiquitita" is a beautiful song, it has hopeful lyrics, a melody that starts very soft with the blonde Agnetha's solo, then grows and explodes in a powerful chorus; Agnetha and Anni Frida's vocal harmonies are of excellence (Agnetha is soprano, Anni Frid is mezzo soprano, and together blending together the 'Third Voice' of ABBA) "Chiquitita" was premiered for the Concert by UNICEF, invited (with a lot of artist) by Bee Gees ABBA premiered "Chiquitita" that night in January 9 (1979), and its royalties are eternal for UNICEF "Chiquitita" was ABBA's greatest success in Latin America, that prompted ABBA to record it in Spanish, and its success was so extraordinary that in the following years ABBA recorded an album with its best songs entirely in Spanish "Chiquitita" was specialy the greatest hit of ABBA in my country Argentina "Chiquitita" is in the Top 3 of all ABBA worldwide biggest hits, with 'Dancing Queen" and "Fernando", and it's a fantastic Masterpiece This promotional video was in February 1979 in Swizterland, when ABBA go there to a special TV "ABBA in Switzerland", for the 'International year of the Child' (That's why the snowman)

The blend of the voices of these stunning ladies is always magical. One of the things that strikes me is that people always THINK that their music is simple and easy to play or sing, which is actually FAR from the truth. The reason is (I believe) because they made it look easy and their playing and singing always looked so effortless. The more carefully you listen to what’s going on in the background (with little trills and sub harmonies by both piano and guitar, or in backing vocals) you will find things that you never noticed before. I’m 67 and was a fan from the very beginning and just now, listening to this song, I noticed a subtle, barely noticeable, piano work that was just magical to hear.

@@DanCanReact That Japanese tv show featuring the 'If it wasn't. for the nights." song is iconic.Fire! That song was aimed to be the lead single of their '79 album 'Voules Vous" and was briefly promoted on a couple of tv shows but the plan changed last minute after they wrote 'Chiquitita" and got this out.Imo both songs could have made a fabulous dual 7 inch release managing a remarkable music contrast.A fantastic, iresistably catcy groovy track that would have been coupled with this glorious ballad.

I Welcome ABBA to your channel.Thank you. US music listeners didn't really took them to their hearts back then, same way we Europeans and most of the rest of the world did.But South(Latin) America and Canada(that i saw you noted you are based) was positively different.Btw this song was no1 in Mexico for 32 weeks.! It’s the US loss that we didn’t know the magic of ABBA in the 70’s, there was just so much music from so many great groups; the decade of unbelievable music, but indeed we should have celebrated ABBA more.

@@carolynsanders3185 I agree and felt deeply sad about this back then. But later on i realised that there was a different culture and music preferences in the States. Plus lots of continental artists plus the hostile US rock press and ABBA's denial to do the demanded promotion with mammoth tours there , that fumed the band's way to make audiences take them to their heart the way we did here in Europe and almost everywhere else in the musicglobe.

Amazing lyrics from a group who's 1st language is not even English 😲. Chiquitita is clearly the name of a friend, though I believe in Spanish that an extra 'ita/o' (female/male) added at the end makes the term smaller, in this case affectionate. An example: Un poco means little, pocito means smaller than that, pocotito means even smaller still! Not sure if that carries on any further. Hereby endeth the lesson lol. Some native Spanish speakers will be able to correct me if I'm wrong 😊

@@DanCanReact Hey, thanks for responding! So I first learned this phenomenon when I was about 12-13 and I started buying music with my own allowance. Before then I had just listened to my parents' cassette tapes and older brother's 45s. When I started buying whole albums (on vinyl! yes I'm old ha) I was thrilled to find they had the lyrics printed on the inner sleeve. This was pre-internet so you couldn't just Google song lyrics. So of course I immediately started reading along with the music, finding the actual words behind misheard lyrics and understanding new songs from the start. Right away I noticed a strange phenomenon. When you're reading the lyrics along with the music, you can't go on the journey with the music. It's two different processes, one emotional, one intellectual. When you read along it sounds as though the singer is reciting lyrics, rather than singing. It's a bit like watching a movie in your native language with the subtitles on. Instead of getting lost in the performance, suspending disbelief (which is the magic of all art and literature, the suspension of disbelief so that medium disappears and you connect with the work), you read the dialogue. It keeps you at a distance from experiencing the work, which requires you to immerse yourself in it, rather than dissect its component parts. If you doubt this phenomenon, try it both ways with two different songs. Music is meant to be heard, not read. Sure, read them later, fill in the gaps of your understanding, absolutely. But not while you're hearing a song for the first time. This is what bothers me most about KZitem reactors, of both movies and music. Very few of them are old enough to have listened to music before lyrics were so easy to access, and very few of them have taken any film or music appreciation classes. This is my free crash course to you 🙂
